View Full Version : Alternator upgrades
I know people use the PA Performance alternators but I couldnt find the threads talking about the specifics on it. I found general discussions but not enough details.
Does anyone have links to or the details of what makes the alternators for our cars different from say a 03-04 cobra alternator??????
Why cant we use Powermaster alternators???? (I remember people talking about Powermaster being willing to do an alternator for us, what makes it different from what they already make?)
I know they will not have the clutch style pulley.
Please give all the details you can.

There is a company on Ebay selling 200 amp Marauder units for about 240.00. He lists the part numbers and all. so... I would extrapolate that out to a direct replacement.
Yes, I could be useless again.

I noticed them...I wonder if anyone here has picked one up.

A 200 amp alternater for 240 is cheap! Ask if that is cold or hot rated as there is a difference. The Ones that we buy from Ohio Generater cost a lot more. Todd why do you need a bigger alternater?

At one time the Powermaster did not have the electronic regulator available. I think it is more common now, so they probably could make us one. I'm tempted to try the ebay one from DB. The company is fairly close to home for me too.

I'd be interested in knowing more about it, where it's made, and if it can be run backwards

I thought only the early MM alternators that were made in Germany had the clutch style pulley? they are also the ones that some people had failures with

Dont need one at this point. But with the new radio I just got from you, possibly more screens in the future, amps that I have now and will upgraded soon, etc.. It would be nice to have something lined up.
Plus my stocker doesnt look that great anymore. And with everything else looking really good it is a shame to put that dull alternator back in.
Speaking of which, I may need to talk with you about those Pioneer amps in the catalog you sent. I cant remember the line or class but they looked awesome.

My 300B has the clutch. In fact, it is starting to go and Dennis is about to put a standard pulley back on my stock unit.
I dont need the clutch style.

I called PA Performance and asked what makes it different. He said the only thing he could see different from the standard 03-04 cobra alternator is the regulator.
He said it looked like ours has a white female receptacle on the alternator itself whereas the Cobra has something else. I dont have my Marauder back yet to tell.
But someone could look at their alternator plug and see what color the female receptacle is on the alternator iteself. Not hte plug itself which is part of the car's harness.
Isn't the alternator turned off at WOT on our cars??

OK. it's still a 2003 model though. Is your 300B one of the 2002 production?

I dont know the production date off the top of my head. I thought it was may 03 but I am probably wrong.....

All Marauders came factory with the clutch pulley on the alternator. Replacement alternators don't come with the clutch pulley.
Todd, just replace the clutch with a 6 rib pulley, non-clutched.

I saw them, I believe he simply recoils a stock unit to handle more power, he rates them at like 105 at idle which is plenty.

Thanks for the clarification Claude.
So for a Trilogy application, a replacement alternator wouldn't need to have the pulley replaced?

Thats what we're doing. I was thinking about upgrading because of stereo stuff and all but there probably isn't a need just yet.

Todd, I'm pulling 60 amps on music and peaking to 90 amps on heavy draw. Just turn up your idle-in-drive a bit (I run at 1000 which just puts the creep back on the 3000 torque converter anyway) so that you still charge a little while at a stop light.
Use power capcitors for the stereo for those high-draw musical transients. I have used a 50 farad cap with 0 guage wire on a Colorado with 130 Amp alternator with 8000 watts fused at 400 (dual 200) amps with no charging issues. On his trip home, he has to reduce volume in the neighborhood and that gives the electrical system time to settle down. Been runnin that way for 'bout a year and a half.

I should be more than fine then. I do not have a capacitor on my system now but I have had one on all my systems previous. In fact I think I have one in my cabinets that I could get put on this system.
I'll have to see.

Putting the tranny in neutral while at stop lights will also give you some of your charging back.
