Scenario
Left rear axle "Clicks" at slow speeds, especially loud when near a building, something to reflect off of.
As an early build 300A, I know I'm probably suffering from "soft axle syndrome". The car is used as a daily driver and I don't plan on a S/C anytime soon. Since the rear end needs to get opened up for the axles, I thought it might be cost effective to do 4:10's at the same time.
So options are:
1) Hardened 28 spline replacement of axles and bearings
2) 31 Spline Moser axles, bearings.
3) Hardened 28 spline replacement of axles, bearings and 4:10's
4) 31 Spline Moser axles, bearings and 4:10's
Lastly, need the name of a quality shop 100 miles or less from Milwaukee, WI.
Thanks
Gary

If you gotta pay to have it done....the 31 Splines CAN'T cost that much more.

Yep - what they said - me too!
At 64k miles it looks like the clutches are shot again. The first set went at 25K miles. I can't decide if I want to upgrade to a locker or not. I don't really drag race the car. I mostly like the road race mode but I like the posi for winter driving.

no, the axles shouldnt cost more for 31 spline., but having to buy a new carrier does.
If cost is the big factor, just get new 28's and 4.10's if you want.

There are more parts back there that youy might think about changing out.
it depends on your horse power level
So I am not voting....not enough options to vote on
add in the differentials

Left rear axle "Clicks" at slow speeds, especially loud when near a building, something to reflect off of.R U sure the axles are bad? Mine just developed a strange intermittent clicking in the left rear that turned out to be the parking brake assy.

Never Mind!! The mounting bolts for body to frame were misaligned on my Marauder. Once that was fixed on warranty the click , clack was gone.

I had a customer in the other day with a 2005 BMW full-size, and it had spent more time in the shop than at home, its just luck of the draw I guess.
look at how many CPVIs get thrashed as cruisers to 120k, then go to 400-500k as taxis, and how many TCs rack up 150k a year and also go 400-500k as regular as clockwork. I'm told that there are over 1000 known Lincolns according to the LCOC with more than 1 million miles. mercedes gets one, they run ads for ten years, ford has thousands, and dosent say a word. my 79 F-600 has in excess of 1 million miles according to the docs I got with it. dont lose faith, the foreign cars have similar if mot bigger issues, they just have better PR.

I had my axle replace just recently, and I asked them to put a beefier axle in it......the mechanic said he put a Yukon axle in it.....then he ranted about how Ford axles are piles of $h!t
