Hello Everyone:

Kinda stupid question but......

Is 40K mileage on 04 MM too high to purchase? This is just a general question?

I know there are many factors, such as prior maintenance by previous, mechanical failures, accidents, etc.

What your opinions?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

The 04 MM won't have the bad axles like the 03. I don't think the 04 had the valve stem seal issue (smoking on startup) either.

When I was looking to buy a Marauder I was looking for the lowest mileage possible. Mine had 23k on it. Guess what? I have probably replaced more parts by 25k than your prospective car w/ 40k has had replaced. Mileage doesn't mean everything. If the paint is immaculate I wouldn't worry about it. I have gotten burned more buying low mileage cars than high. Why? If a car has unusually low mileage for the year, often times someone is selling it for a reason (ie., history of major repairs, accident, etc). I bought a 2003 Acura TL type S with the lowest mileage I could find (17k). The car went through 3 transaxles by the time it had reached 45k miles. It also had been totally repainted before I bought it, and not reported to Carfax.

Live and learn.

Hey Scott,

I bought my 03 with slightly higher than usual miles for its age. I had an OASIS report ran from the VIN and other than a headlamp unit and suspension compressor replacement when it was less than a year old, the car had a clear history. The owner maintained it very well. Paint wasnt great and it had a few dings. I bought it cheap, way under what book was for it. Plus, there were some upgrades already done to it. Get with member Roy L Pita, he is good about running an OASIS for ppl here.

40K is nothing on these cars. It's not as if it's a Honda Civic.

at 40K it's just getting broken in.

Plus, 40k on a 2004 car is only just over 10k a year. Thats not bad at all.

As said before....40K miles is nothing.......

These cars with routine maintenance will go 250-300K miles without any major mechanical work......then simply rebuild and go another 10 years!!:D

If you have a deal you can live with.....go for it and don't look back!!! You'll be glad you did!!;)

The de tuned 4.6 SOHC will go 300k in a cop car/taxi, I wish I had more info on the 4.6 DOHC's trouble free longevity. Nature dictates that an engine in a higher state of tune probably won't last as long. We have higher compression = higher cylinder pressure, and we turn more rpms cruising since we don't have the low low gears that the 4.6 sohc low po motors do. I'm hoping I'll get 150 k out of the 4.6 DOHC at least (N/A), that would still do me pretty well.

IMO 40K on a three year old car is about average. Go for it.:D

I just got my 04' MM last week w/ 61k showing. It was a one owner and I bought it sight unseen. Aside from a few paint issues the MM is great. The carfax and OASIS were clean. Based on the reliability of these cars the mileage shouldn't run you off. However, the mileage should be taken into consideration when making an offer to purchase as it will affect the resale value should you ever decide to sell.

If the car has been maintained well, buy it.
Then treat it like your baby, as most of us do.
It will last for many years.
Like with any car, lack of care and salt will do it in...

What you say may be true in some cases, but I have considered selling my 03
MM 300A purchased new on 04/02/2004. At this time in my life I do not have to drive all that much so the MM only has 18,400 miles as of today. If I sold the car I would ask a very reasonable $15,300.00. Well maintained and in very good condition. Just my experience.

Highwya or city, that's the question to ask.

I have about 70,000 on my '04. 20K city miles are worse than 100K highway. As has always been true, engines love to run. It's shut-down / start-up that is tough on them.

I presently have 3,000 miles on my most recent Mobil 1 oil change. I check my level at each and every fill-up. The oil is still clear....

How's that for a testimonial????

IN Summary: Find out if they are primarily highway or city miles. Ask open-ended questions to get a more realistic answer.

As long as the price is right go ahead and pull the trigger. Of course try to get all maintenance records from the seller if possible and have a reliable mechanic/technician inspect it beforehand.

Nope. If I don't get 150,000 out of mine I'll be surprised.

40,000 on a 3 to 4 year old car? I was there at 1 year.

+2 on that!

The OASIS report will give you maintenance history on the car, all you need to do is PM R.L.P. with the VIN number, and he'll take care of the rest.

IMO, if the car's clean, and the OASIS report looks good, go for it!:burnout:

2003DOHC I didn't mean there aren't enthusiasts like yourself who sell legit low mileage cars. However, in the used car marketplace, there are certainly a good number of low mileage cars that people are getting out of because they hate them for one reason or another. My uncle had two fairly major collisions with a $55k new Beemer, and had panels replaced and paint work done without reporting the accidents. He sold the car with like 700 miles on it, I'm sure whoever bought it had no idea what they were buying. LOL.

I doubt 150K will be too difficult. Over on the Lincoln boards there are a lot of 150+K mile Mark VIIIs, and those were the first cars the 4.6 DOHC saw service in. They're geared a little lower (3.07 or 3.23 if it's an LSC) though. I don't expect to see 300K, but 150 should be no sweat.
