View Full Version : rough idle, hesitation
I had the car in last wk for an oil change, and questioned them about the cold engine hesitation. It will do it for the first couple of starts from a stop. Always has since new. I asked them about an updated load for the PCM, and they claim the load that I have is the latest. I have one of the old FDH2 boxes. It has never been updated yet. My question is, is there a TSB out there for this problem? I thought that the chip would take care of the idle and hesitation, but it never went away, and the dealer is clueless about it.

I have the hesitation problem also. I've asked my dealer to check the computer for the latest update. They of course said I had the latest update. I find that puzzling because I have a very early build car. I should take it to another dealer but I cringe at taking in for service.

I have a similar hesitation when the car is cold, it's much more noticeable when it's cold out.
I brought up the subject with the dealership about the updated software, and was also told I had the latest. However, it didn't match what I had noted down from this site.
According to the tech's explanation, there are apparently (I think) four versions of the PCM code. For each of these versions, there is a latest version of the calibration (ie. tables, etc.). So, for my PCM code (CRD1, if I remember correctly), I did indeed have the latest s/w, at least at the time. The part number I brought with me (taken from Cruz's car) corresponded to a different PCM s/w.
Why are there 4 versions of MM's PCM code? Dunno...

Pete...Ditto what /Steve says ^
There are recent updates to the chip as well, give Dennis a call? Not everyone needs them because of the four editions of ECM programming.
I had this problem with my first MM (FDH2 program) that got fixed with my second RPC re-program with the Team Ford power tune. Now I have it with my second MM (FDH2 also), and it's not fixed, though a Reinhart chip is present. I think there are a few small changes to RPC programming that will cure it, and those who purchased a while back should check in with Dennis.

I have the same hesitation also only when the engine is cold. My '97 Continental with the 4.6L DOHC also has had the same hesitation all its life. What really bothers me the most is the cold engine high idle as soon as you turn the key. My tach reads over 2K and this can't be good for a cold engine- especially when it hasn't left the garage for over a week- judging by the metal-to-metal sounds I hear for the first few seconds. (My Marauder doesn't like to go out in the rain)

I thought 96 Connies and up had the Dohc. Actually what I saw somewhere was that out engine's basic design was originally for the front-drive Connie. IMHO.

After several calls to the service manager and two to LM Cusomter Service, mine is going in Friday for a software update - I hope. (that's what I have been told).
Same cold hesitation problem, btw.

There have been four different ECM codes
early FDH2
second BMD0
third CRD0
fourth CRD1
If you search, there is a thread somewhere here that talks about a reflash update for cold hesitation

I just found reference to this "Admin msg 16428"
I think that details the reflash

Mine had the hesitation until FordChip Dyno Tune, now everything is great. I have stock(3.55) gearing.
Mercury Dealer(Pugmire) kept insisting that I had latest software but problem was still there until Chip installation.

SSM 16428
2002 MARAUDER HESITATION/STUMBLE COLD ONLY
SOME 2003 MARAUDERS MAY EXHBIT A HESITATION/STUMBLE DURING THE FIRST 2 MINUTES OF OPERATION FOLLOWING A COLD START.THIS WILL TYPICALLY OCCUR WHEN THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IS APPROXIMATELY 70-90 DEGREES F DURING OPEN LOOP STAGE.THIS MAY BE DUE TO THE PCM.TO SERVICE,REPROGRAM THE PCM WITH THE LATEST CALIBRATION USING WDS RELEASE B22NM-2 OR LATER. THA LATEST CALIBRATION CONTAINS IMPROVED AIR/FUEL MIXTURE RATIOS.
Ok thats it, print it and show it to you service writer.First thing out of his mouth will be "how did you get this?"
That ssm # tells them what they need to know.
I took that note in and told them this is what my car is doing and it drives me nuts.
BTW it does say "2002 Marauder" thats not my misprint.
Another thing after this mod I picked up a solid .10 in the 1/4 mile. For free.
