With axle replacement set for Thursday, I was rounding up tools. As for the rear bearings, I was going to go with the pound out method. Went to autozone to get brake clean, etc and lo and behold, they have tools for use. Brand new tool was a floating axle bearing removal attachment that goes on a slide hammer and a trick set of bearing/seal drivers.

Ready for thursday!....Confidence High and FoMoCo instructions in hand

Good luck. This sounds much harder than any of the work I have done on my car.

That sounds good, keep us posted and let us know how it goes. It's about time AZ is actually useful. I've stopped going there since all they do when you go is argue about something you happen to know to be true, and they say the opposite. Man, do I hate that Auto Zone commercial when the guy is talking about his alternator being bad, and he checked the solenloid, and blah blah blah the employee going out of the way to make sure he didn't spend a lot of money. When I used to go there, they made sure you emptied your wallet.

the rear axle bearings should come out fairly easy with the puller tool. I'm assuming it is a large slap hammer with the puller threaded on the end.( that is what FORD shows in manual for removal)
I would NOT pound them out. Also when installing the axle shafts be careful not the let shaft to drag or rest on the axle seal to prevent future leakage
Lots a luck. Don't sweat the job.
