View Full Version : Intake and engine blowing....

One thing I forgot to mention, when I heard my motor go the other day, I pulled over and popped the hood. The first thing I noticed was that (and forgive my ignorance with regards to proper terminology, but hopefully someone will understand what I'm talking about) the clamp that holds the rubber "elbow" (the part that connects the pipe to the engine) onto the big 4" pipe on my JTL Ram Air kit had slipped off. This elbow part was not sealed or truly connected anymore to the pipe, therefore, I believe, the engine was not getting air, or at least not the quantity of air it usually gets. The elbow piece itself (which is usually black) was also discolored a greenish/white as if it had withstood tremendous heat. Not sure which came first, it could have heated up and thereby allowed the clamp to slip off. Or the clamp might have slipped off and then it heated up.
Anyway...this was obvious. I reattached it and drove it to the dealer.
Did a $200 intake kit (or more specifically, a $5 clamp) fail and cost me a $6K motor?
Once you find out whats wrong with it, we'll tell you.

My initial thought would be that the MAF would have little or no flow past it.

That would have probably caused a lean condition. Not good for engines.

Lean enough to burn a piston or two?

Yeah...I don't know. The dealer's not going to tear down the engine, and I"m not going to insist. I just want it back together so I have something to drive while I decide on what to replace it with...anything from a Shelby to an Infinity M35, seriously.
Wanna sell it in its current state?
