My MM is in the shop getting ready to have the 4.10's put in. In Feb, right before the warranty ran out, I had them check the axles for the problem, and sure enough they had them. The dealer said that there was enough shavings in the fluid that they replaced the axles, bearings, and the gears. Within about 1000 miles, the new gears started whining, and have gotten progressively louder. They found a broken spacer, and replaced it, but didn't fix the noise; I guess the wear pattern had already set up, so they're replacing the gears too. Fortunately, they're going to allow me to bring in my 4.10's and they'll install them. Ford won't pay for the 4.10's, but they will install mine, and I'll get to keep the new 3.55's. One of my coworkers has a 97 GT convertible with 2.73's, and he's probably gonna by the 3.55's, to help me recover my money from buying the 4.10's, which works out nicely. If not, I'll put them in my Mustang, which now has 3.73's. The gas savings between the 3.55 and 3.73 should help me pay for the gears, in about 135 years since I drive the car about 800 miles per year.

My question is about the gear quality. I bought the gears through Late Model Restoration, a major and fairly local Mustang specialty place. They said that the Ford Motorsport gears in the 4.10 ratio are on backorder, and they sold me the regular Ford branded gears. I've heard some folks on here say that there are differences between the quality of the two brands. The regular Ford brands are more expensive. Do you think there is a difference in quality?

The service writer at the Ford place (who is a racer) says that there is only 2 plants that mill the gears, and he wouldn't hesitate to put the Yukon brand gears in the car. I may see if there are some available at FFW in Houston this weekend and buy the cheaper ones.

I've had FRP 4.10's in my MM for about 3 years and have had no problems with them.

mrjones, I've heard that the OEM Ford gears are cut a little differently for quieter operation and that makes them a little more $$, but, like fastblackmerc, I've had my FRPP gears in for almost 3 years, the last 2 with the blower installed, and I've had no issues at all.

I'll Only run FoMoCo or FMS gears in my cars. My mustang has a set of 3.55's from a bronco with 120k. Free and are quiet and have taken the abuse I've given them on slicks.
