I'm sure many of you guys will know the answer to this one, so here it goes..........if I get the chip from Dennis, and install it in my MM w/out also installing the Denso plugs and cooler thermostat also, then will the chip cause the fan in my car to run more often than it does now??? And if so, then will installing the plugs and the cooler thermostat prevent the fan from turning on so much???

ENGINE WILL RUN COOLER , LESS FAN WORK .

w/just the chip and the stock thermostat and plugs left in there? I thought that w/out the cooler thermostat the reason it might run cooler is because the chip would cause the fan to turn on more often. How else would it run cooler w/out installing cooler plugs and a cooler thermostat? I guy I know put someone else's chip in his car, and the fan turned on more often. that is the reson for my question.

You should be ok for a few test runns, but anything more then that, and you will want to install them.
I'm not sure on the fan question.

Gman:
The reason for the cooler thermostat is that cooler engines make more power. The reason for replacing the plugs is two-fold, depending on which ones you get (copper or Iridium); Dennis recommends the 2-step cooler copper plugs to help prevent pre-ignition caused by the platinum plugs when used with his programming. This allows for maximum spark advance, which makes more power. The Denso Iridium plugs do much the same thing, but also add a few more HP.
As far as the fan question, Dennis will have to confirm this, but I don't think he alters the temperature setting at which the fan turns on...I never noticed any difference with his chip, nor do I notice anything with my current FordChip ECM reflash...

The chip is programmed to function with the plugs and stat installed. I don't know if it would cause any harm, but running for extended periods of time with the item not functioning with-in computer peramiters is never a "good idea."
Like I said early, I'm a trouble shooter, not a wrench. SO take it for what it's worth.
Dennis is about the only one who would be able to give you the exact answer.

I've asked this question of Dennis specifically, and he explained that lowering engine temps with the stat (which is only a few degrees, from the OEM 192 to 180) and improving the spark, the combustion process is both cleaner and more efficient. To install his chip without the plugs and stat will not cause any harm, but it will not provide it's full potential.
I installed my 180 stat and AWSF120 Motorcraft plugs when I first installed the chip and 4:10s. My RWHP improved to 266.4 and my RWTQ improved to 285.0, but I cannot precisely say how much of that improvement is stat and plugs. However, later I upgraded to the Denso IT 20 plugs alone, and they added 4.1 RWHP and 3.3 RWTQ, and the numbers add up.
Before I sold this car, I topped out at 275.4 RWHP and 301.6 RWTQ, 0-60 in 6.03 and a 1/4 mile ET of 14.214. All on Dennis's bolt on mods and advice. It's money well spent, IMHO.

Hey Mac,
When you ran the 14.2 did you perform any track side cooling or was that off the street type numbers?
Remember your track post somehow got nuked and I missed it..
And BTW that time is ONE FULL SECOND plus .17 quicker than I have run stock. That realey was an amazing number.

I thought the stocker was 188?

No trackside cooling, in fact, just the opposite. Dennis said that there is an optimal engine temp for combustion and the only way I could hold that temp was to leave the engine idle while in the starting lanes. So, I did, and got the 14.214. the other runs were also 14.2x, so the car is very consistent.
This is a good time, Cyclone, best I've seen posted here yet, but it's not my best. The track was dirty and wet, and everyone was burning up at the tree. Had conditions been better, I'm sure I would have dropped into the high 13's.
Anyone can knock off a full second with our simple mods, but after that, you're fighting for tenths. The car is down in Austin Texas now, hope we'll see some improved times posted here soon.

Maybe someone with the service manual can confirm this, but I thought it was 192°...

I have the Ford service manual( very pricey BTW) and it says that it's the 16 valve engines of the Crown Vic and the Marquis that has a hotter stat. It's a bit confusing the way that it lists the temperatures though. It lists the Marauder stat as 183-190 degrees as the temp that it "begins to open" and the "fully open" temperature as being 210 degrees. So I dunno if that is considered a 185 degree stat or a 210 degree one:confused:
The stock stat is stamped 187 or 188 degrees that means it opens at that temp and is fully open at that temp.

very interesting. I guess the Ford shop manual isn't always accurate.......

So the car was sold. That didn't take long.
Is the new owner a member here? (I may have just missed the post about it)

That's funny, cuz I just replaced the stat myself and the stock one out of my MM has nothing stamped on it at all except "54mm"
Look to the bottom of the thermostat, through the hole in the center. At the bottom, stamped in the metal will be 188

Well I'll be damned...I was gonna agree with the G-man, but I checked one more time, and right where Zack said: 188°...that would 'splain why there's so little difference in the temp gauge reading with Dennis's 180° unit...
