View Full Version : 4.10 install, now ABS light on

I finished the 4.10 install tonight, reflashed with the 4.10 load (SCT) and now the ABS light is on when I moved it around in the driveway some. No highway speeds yet. I was even extra careful with the plastic sensors too, but did not clean them. Not sure why the light is on though. Do I need to drive it some? The only think I can think of is that I accidently mashed the brake before I put the calipers back on, so I had to recompress the pistons (used c-clamp) to get the calipers back on, but I wouldn't think that would hurt anything.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Check the ABS sensors. Might have broken one of the wires or a sensor.

Roger fastblack, I will look at them again but I think they were okay.
Can I clear the ABS light code using the SCT scanner?

You might be able to. I've never had an ABS code so I don't know.

Did You Have To Loosen The Abs Sensors To Slide The Axles In?

I don't think the ABS light is the same as a check engine light where a code is stored in the ECM. I would assume that once the problem is found and fixed the light will go out. I agree with fastblackmerc, you must have either broken a wire or bumped a sensor or there is dirt or grease on the ABS sensor.

Or maybe the sensors aren't in the correct position.

I have never experienced, but have heard that when the calipers get pushed in you have to open the bleeder needle or you can damage the abs system.

You Do Not Have To Open The Bleeder To Compress The Caliper Piston

Thats what I have always thought, but a mechanic told me that that on newer cars you do in fact have to go through this step because the rush of fluid damages the abs pump or makes it go bad prematurely. I don't know.

check wiring and make sure you actually tightened them down

When I started it the next day to try additional troubleshooting, I moved it slowly back and forth in the driveway, trying to listen for any noises, and I noticed the light went back out. way cool. I drove it for 10 minutes (gently) and let her cool for an hour. repeated this twice. Today I plan on doing a few launches (since it was so hard not to during 'break in'). Not sure why the light came on but I guess these MMs are 'self healing'...:)
Thanks for all the inputs guys, I was starting to 'be concerned' about the light.
No noise whatsoever from the rear, FRPP 4.10 with Ratech install kit. I replaced the axle bearings too, since we were already in there.

Open the bleedder screw before compressing the caliper on ABS cars.

Did the light come on right at start up or at the ~13mph rolling self-test?

Hmmm, That's odd I am an ASE Master Tech, General Motors certified in ABS, brake systems, and stability systems, and I have never opened bleeders it compress calipers. I also have never had a problem with any ABS system coming back with pump or valve problems.

There is only ONE ABS/Speed sensor, and its located on the 'pumkin' of the rear diff.

Chances are, when you installed the gears, you may have bumped the sensor or pinched the wire to the sensor. The wire has clips that hold it and actually goes up into the rear seat area via a grommet, so replacing requires removing the rear seat cushion.
If the light comes back on, You'll need the speed sensor, and a 10 MM socket and a flat head screwdriver to replace. It's a very easy operation.

Me either!
