Requiem for a 300A
As some of you may already know, Ol' Black's ticker gave out a few weeks ago after returning from the KY regional gathering.:bigcry: The answer to everyone's question is 187K w/4.10 gears. No compression in #5 cylinder and best guess is a bent valve.:( It was one heck of a trip and wouldn't have missed it for the world. Of all the rides I've owned, Ol' Black had what I called the highest HTR (head turning ratio).
So what's next you ask? Well, due to a recent accident at work, my wrenching abilities will be pretty limited for a couple of months which forced me to go buy a used car. Hopefully when I heal up I'll be able to do a complete swap something on the order of a 5.0 cammer.:coolman: Might even be able to get it done by MV5.
Oh by the way, the used car I bought is this big 4yr. old 4-door black Mercury w/26K on the odometer and resembles a Grand Marquis and has some shiny 18" wheels and has been named Ol' Black II.:D

Damn Charlie, I wasn't aware you had that kind of milage.
Odd that it wasn't #7 that went, what with our poor cooling in that area...but I think you got a good sprint from that mod motor. Better than 36k that's for sure!
Good luck, and perhaps BOTH of us may be seen in Marauders by MV-5.;)

So whats the plan for the old MM?
Going to be my project car now.
For starters, how about:
Punch it out to 5.0, forged crank, rods, & pistons,
CNC ported heads (Patriot?),
Comp cams,
Long tube headers,
Turbo or supercharger and/or NOS
Upgrade fuel delivery (pump, injectors, throttle body, and maybe intake),
and more as the wallet allows.

Dont put cams in it, they really are not worth it if you are going forced induction.

Suggested treatments/implants to revive???? Possibly forgedhonio crankus alastrokus, roddus maximus, piston cavernous replacemento, along with a Vortech pacemaker and intraveinious water methanol not to mention 5axis CNC ported valve chambers to accomodate the other prescribed surgical improvements.

Upon teardown of the left cylinder head, discovered that the very front exhaust valve seat had come out of the valve seat counter-bore, got sideways and apparently held valve open far enough to have piston hit the valve and in turn shatter the seat. Shrapnel was imbedded in top of piston, bottom of valve chamber, and fragments blown back into the intake. It appears that the seat had been loose some time since the bottom of the seat pocket was discolored. One thing that puzzles me is the general consensus here is that the common problem of valve tick and LH head overheating issue was mainly confined to the rear cylinder:confused:
Am I correct in that there was a silent recall in which the entire LH head assembly was replaced and if so, was the whole assembly easier to replace than repair the problem with the head?
I've searched a number of threads but haven't found definitive answers to:
What exactly was the root cause of the issue with the head?
Can the issue be corrected by modifying the head?(rear head cooling kit?)
Couldn't a valve tick be caused by a loose seat?
Can an aluminum head run so hot as to expand the valve seat bore and loosen the valve seat since aluminum expands at a lower temperature than the steel seat?
If the head can not be salvaged, there seems to be some confusion as to the correct factory replacement head (2C5Z-6049-BAB vs. 4L3Z-6049-BA).Even if the head is salvageable (some welding and oversize valve seats) I'm guessing the repair cost would be better spent on a new head or a set of ported FR500s since I'd be buying all new valve train components anyway. But would buying new head(s) resolve the main isssue or is there still a need for additional alterations such as a rear cylinder head cooling kit?

Depends on whether or not it's a Jap 4 banger that is too slow to break itself and will go 300k. Or a 100 hp 80's diesel Mercedes that weighs 5500 lbs. LOL. But I'd rather not be in that boat anyway.

I would just get a set of used heads and have them gone through. Sounds like you need a bottom end built, too. Since shrapnel is imbedded in the piston. I can get you a good, low mileage stock engine for $3k, which is less than you'll spend getting yours fixed or built.

Maybe true if running stock compression. But if I go with a 5.0 stroker crank, .020 over 8.5 pistons in order to run more boost, and the FR500 heads (FRPP #'s M-6049/6050-T46) wouldn't a cam upgrade be prudent (FRPP recommends their M-6550-T46 high lift camshaft kit)? Another possibility would be to use Comp Cams XE262AH.
Ive heard the GT supercar cams are the cats meow.
And they are about $450 OVER THE COUNTER!
The FR500 heads really dont perform better out of the box, and a set of ported MM heads will give awesome numbers

But again, if the left head is defective, why pay $750 for a replacement head that may or may not be a good match for the original right (cc's & flow) and porting when I can get two new FR500's for $1500? Tell me more about the "GT supercar cams". Lift and duration?

Look closely at the pic. Thru the entry door to Charlie's house from the garage, you can see partly into his living room.
If you are not careful in there you will trip over the plumbing for the S/C'r falling forward hitting the OEM wheel that's left of the fireplace.
Bouncing off then landing on the X-Pipe and mufflers positioned between the coffee table loaded up with Hot Rod magazines and the dining table housing literature for his build and a checkoff list.
If moving fast enough, you could possibly fall backwards at this point coming to rest on the ignition wiring harness neatly laid out on a sheet next to the far wall.
All this could happen while passing thru to get a cold beer in his kitchen.

If you're running headers you'll have to trim the flexplate shield.
And double-check the mounting bolts, I bought two with the flanges in the wrong place and had to send them back before I finally got them to revise the mounting flange locations for me.

We have reached a point where MM are needing engine replacements.
Not all of us, maybe just a few.
Those of us running Full Synthetic will be around for awhile.
My engine finally broke in around 45,000 miles
on Mobil1 according to Blackstone Labs.
I have the only 4.6L 32V V8 engine with
the LONGEST break in period that Blackstone Labs has on record.
Currently I am almost at 87,000 miles
and she still pulls like day one with no tick at all,
no blue smoke and no oil burning.
I'll be rebuilding the 4R75W before I touch the engine.

It looks like the Mobil 1 has proven to be well worth the extra expense for you. I certainly hope your engine does outlast the transmission, and I wish I also had your confidence. My MM came to me with 13,000 miles on it and it sometimes smokes at start-up.

I am on the waiting list for the first one that is compatible with the GM LS1 coil packs. They are the bomb-diggity!

Just bumping an old thread. The Beast roared to life today! It took a little tweaking on the program (Special thanks to Dennis Reinhart for some quick changes on a Sunday afternoon) but man does this thing sound scary. Idle set at 1000rpm and doesn't even begin to smooth out til 2000:D. Special thanks also goes to Drewstang, MM2004, Embassy, Twistngo, and #4# for helping to get it fired up. Will be starting a new thread soon detailing the build . Again, thanks to all who lent a hand!

Did you take the stock seatbelt socket out? Is it possible to take it out or move it?

Not sure what socket you're referring to. All front stock seatbelts are being retained for insurance purposes and to keep airbags activated. The tricky part was getting arround the occupant sensor bladder under the passenger seat cushion. Had to fabricate a bracket to route the anti-submarine belt. Will post some pics in the build thread.
