Dennis thanks for the great deal on the TC. Now for the questions would I need a re-tune after I install my 3500 stall converter, would it be wise to install a transmission cooler - if so what kinds and what brand transmission fluid would be good to use? My Marauder is daily driven and taken to the track ever so often. I'll be having a very good transmission shop doing the work, they do regular cars to NHRA drag cars.

when I put my 3000 in I didnt really like it at first until I got a new tune with the trans changes. Now I have upgraded to a 3500 and havent changed anything yet, as of right now I personally dont like driving my car alot becouse I havent made any changes yet. I would suggest a trans cooler also. and use Mercon V fluid. I am sure I will be more than happy with it once I get an updated tune. Just my 2 cents.

How hot is too hot? The ideal operating temperature for automatic transmission fluid is between 175 and 225° F. At approximately 240° F, important additives in the ATF begin to cook. The result is the formation of varnish inside the transmission. At approximately 260° F, internal transmission seals (which are typically manufactured from a polyacrylate material) begin to harden. The end results are leaks, both internal and external, simply because the seals lose their elasticity. At approximately 295° F, transmission clutch plates begin to slip because the oil is breaking down further. At approximately 315° F, seals and clutches effectively burn out. Carbon forms in the oil and for all intents and purposes, the transmission is junk. Just for your information, a typical transmission will die within 2000 miles if subjected to 300° F+ heat.

I have found that unless it is over 90 outside and you are really beating the snot out of the car, the temps wont climb above 180 with the stock cooler.

People say you don't necessarily need a re-tune once you get it installed, Only need a retune if you want to take full advantage of the T/C.

The car will drive without a retune, and it'll be faster at the track. But you want to tune it when you can. The shifts are all out of whack until you do.

I've got over a year and 10,000 miles on a 3500 with no changes to the cooler.

For every one who says no, you'll find a yes. I plan on putting one on, just haven't gotten around to it yet. No exessive temps on my daily driver, and I do put on some miles. It gets over 90 here in the summer easy, and no problems.

This mod should have you at 13.50s or so. I lost .7 secs off my 1/4 without tune.

You should be fine, try it at the track and lets see

I had the 3000 stall installed and drove it for a few hundred miles without modifing my tune and it performed just fine, but it definitly improved when the lock-up schedule was adjusted in a new tune.

<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->Yeah that is my main concern because I daily drive this car 1500-2000 miles a month so I'm sure I would be happier with getting a re-tune to adjust the lock-up schedule.

Dennis, is their a file you can send me or is something I need to have done in person? I have your Xcal2 unit with engine code MAV4, 3.55 gears and run 255/55-18s in the rear.

Thanks Dennis for explaining things to me. Is their any break-in time I should allow for after having it installed before I take it to the track?

I backed out of my tranny shop and punched the throttle leaving a 20ft skid mark.
No break in required, There is nothing internal that needs to create a wear pattern.

I have the 3000 PI TC and a large B&W trans cooler. The cooler is worth maybe 10-15 degrees cooling the trans and not much more. Simple highway driving at a constant 80 MPH it will run 180 degrees at 80 degrees outside. Any type of spirited driving and shifting puts it over 190-200 quickly. Drag racing will put it over 210 after a few runs. My advise is to get the largest cooler you can possibly put in front of the radiator - minimum 24" wide and 12" H. I have yet to find one that in my mind is big enough to handle any type of racing in our car with the 3000 PI. I ran at Road Atlanta Saturday and had to pit after 3 laps when the trans temp hit 250 degrees and the fluid started to smell -fried! But, it was fun while it lasted keeping up to a 427R Roush SC Mustang.
