I'm considering selling/trading in my 04 MM. Do I tell the dealer that it has mods? ie 4:10's 3000 stall TC and xcal from Lideo

I doubt the dealer would offer you more if they knew about the mods.

Thanks, thats what I was thinking. Just needed a second opinion. I'll see if he asks when he test drives it.

you ought to tell him.
if he resells it, he has to warranty the car. this could create some real issues.

Yea Jon is right. What if someone bought it, broke the ring and pinion, brings it back, they crack it open to discover 4.10's, tell him the stock ratio is 3.55 and he has to pay for it.
You would prolly make more by selling it yourself. The dealer likes "Stock" cars.
Undoing the mod's would not be cost effective and the dealer would decrease the trade in value substantially. Then he would sell it at auction, and I could pick it up for a song. (ha)

Private sale should get you a better price

First, why the hell do I care?
Second, why would the buyer be responsible for a product that was on the car when bought?
Just my thoughts.

You will most likely get more if you sell it your self. But If you trade it in you get a tax savings to your new car or truck you are purchaseing. Most of the time your better off selling it your self money wise.

When I bought my 03 from the dealer it already had a ProCharger, et..... I asked the sales person about 6 times if the car would be under warranty because of all the after market parts he told me yes and as it turns out he was sadly mistaken. About 1 month after buying the car, the engine went. I had a hard time trying to get them to fix it under the warranty because they blamed the ProCharger (one of the fins came off and got sucked in the engine.....my a$$) I fought with them and explained what the sales person and I talked about and they finally broke down and put a new engine in it. If the dealer sells it to a private person it's up to the dealer to not warranty the car if it's been modded. If someone buys a modded car from the dealer then it would be the purchasers responsibility.

In NY if you trade it in you save the tax for the trade in.
Example: If you pay 40 K for a new car and get 20K for your trade you pay tax on 20K. That's almost $1,800 in savings.
IMO you must get at least 2K more in a private sale than the dealer offers to break even with the above example..

Yes, you are 100% correct and I have had a similar situation happen to me. However, it gives you tons of leverage that you are simply a purchaser at a dealership that you would expect to sell cars of quality. An educated consumer would win your case 9 out of 10 as you did. One thing you can do is have them underwrite the warranty or not buy the car (unlikley) or pretend to have no idea what the hell is under the hood.

Well, looks like its still split on if I should advise on upgrades. Probably will tell them and see what happens. I would hate if I went and bought a used car and then find a problem and not have it covered. Get a feeling that I will be coming home in my MM. Guess it won't be that bad since it only has 33k miles.
