Hey all,
For those of you who've changed your stock converter, did you add a deeper pan, tranny cooler or both or neither?
I will be installing a PI 3000 in the near future, and reading some old threads and looking at other members mods, I noticed that some people have done nothing but add the converter, and others have added other items.
Is a deeper pan and/or cooler necessary? My car is a daily driver, 95% city driving. Keep in mind that I also drive in the winter where temps get down to -30ºC and in the summer it can swing to as high as +35ºC.

Is a deeper pan and/or cooler necessary?Necessary? Not really. Are they a very good idea? You betcha.
If you don't drag (or AutoX) your car, and don't tow anything with it, then no, they are not necessary. In fact, in winter there can actually be such a thing as too much cooling. That's why most experienced transmission builders recommend you plumb any additional coolers in series with, instead of in place of, the stock cooler.
A higher-stall converter IS going to make more heat, and heat is the enemy of transmission fluid, so if you're a conservative driver who just likes to get on it once in a while, then add the deeper pan and change the fluid more often and you'll be fine.
OTOH, if you drive like Zack then you'll need 3 extra coolers, and a CO2 spray system for them... :D

A few things to remember:
Heat is the enemy of your trans.
The deeper pan usually has a drain plug making it easier for fluid changes.
Heat is the enemy of your trans.
The deeper pan also adds about 2 extra quarts to the total fluid capacity.
Heat is the enemy of your trans.
A trans cooler is cheap insurance.
Heat is the enemy of your trans.
IMHO, you can't go wrong if you do the deeper pan and cooler, because.....
Heat is the enemy of your trans.

What cooler do you guys recommend? How about for the pan? I was just going to do the converter myself, but a few guys at work have done a higher stall in other HiPo vehicles and have had bad results with them and told me I should invest in a deep pan and a cooler with it, but I know some here just do the converter with good results.

Hey all,
Thanks for all the votes on the poll. So far I see most have done both the cooler and the deeper pan. I've never been to the track, and most of my action is @ a stoplight. I'll start by getting a deeper pan and go from there. Art Carr and FRPP seem to be the favorites. I'll look into those.
merc: So you are using NOS to cool the tranny cooler? Interesting.

A few members have used the B & M trans coolers. I think Kenny Brown used it on his series of Marauders.

Read this article. The spray bar can be used in front of the radiator and will cool the factor trans cooler at the same time. JD and I were talking about this and similar mods last year. Hopefully I will have the kit by the end of June.

I used a TCI deep sump pan and a B&M stacked plate cooler inline with the factory cooler. Although many say neither are needed. With both I can still hit 190 for a temp. And its easy to do.

The Ford Racing Pan Dennis has on his site, is that the deep pan one?

Mike,
Re: the cooler.
A good many of the coolers are made by Dana, Long (tru-cool) and
some are tighter in spacing than others. ie. more air flow thru front of
the MM if wider spacing. Most are self-regulating.
I spoke to the factory in Canada and the engineer said we could install
either in series ( after the OEM one ) or in parallel (split hot oil in two
with a Y ).
The Mako Distributing people who distribute and sell this line and others suggested using the wider spaced cooler #LPD4543 (71/4x11x3/4) so as to get better air flow in front thru cooler and the condenser, radiator and
oem trans cooler. Also because if wider spacing did a better job ie. 20,000 GVW.
My 2cents.

Looks like a neat kit I'll be checking it out if you get it.

In my own experience, with a PI 3000 TC, FRPP large trans pan, and the largest B&W trans cooler mounted in front of the radiator, any spirited driving will drive the temperature to over 190 degrees in just a few minutes. In fact even a few hard passes on the interstate will shot the temp to over 190 with 80 outside Temps. 3-4 1/4 mile runs will shoot it to 210+ and 3 laps on Road Atlanta raceway resulted 250 and fried fluid (but I stayed glued on the bumper of a nice 427R Roush Mustang). I have yet to find a suitable cooler even with B&W.

I have the stock converter but used B&M for the pan and cooler. The pan adds 3 qts.

From the FRPP catalogue:
M-7195-4R Fits 4R70W Trans
M-7195-AOD Fits AOD/AODE Trans
Although the AOD pan will fit, there's an extra hole in the flange that must be plugged or it will leak. The one you want is the M-7195-4R.

OH OH, get this. Do you know how much my local stealership wants to install my T/C for?? $600 *****in dollars! That's just for labor only, no fluids, nothing. What a rip.

Where are you guys mounting the B&M cooler? I haven't taken a long look for a place to mount it yet, but I can't seem to see a logical place. My Grand Marquis had a metal lower radiator support that I was able to mount to. Are you guys just using the zip ties?

I hung mine off of the front side/top of the radiator support - in front of the A/C condenser. Just under the horn assembly - I used one of the bolts to hold one side of a home made bracket to hang the cooler off of.

That seems a little high. I was quoted $349 Cdn. by my local high perf. shop. That's labour only. I will be supplying my own Mercon V fluid.

Yes, Speedshop. Last time I trusted a Tranny only speedshop, my tranny never acted the same, and they used the wrong fluid. I figure I would get it done right at the dealer, although they could too mess up, a little less likely, but still possible. I'll have to see, I'll check a few other Ford dealers around here and see if they run me the same cost.

I did an Art Carr pan with my 3K PI converter and Art Carr LII kit. Temps rise to 203. The massive DR trans cooler with braided lines is sitting at DR's waiting for me.
