OK, I know everyone has there own opionion on wax. I have never owned a black car before but know the color black shows just about any imperfection after waxing. I was going to give my Marauder a good pampering and was wondering what brand or specific type of wax you guys have had good luck with.
I trust just about anything from 3M and was going to give their wax a whirl but if you guys have any suggestions by all means let me know!!

Kiwi -- been using it on my shoes forever. ;)

I am using Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax and an occasionally rebuff with Turtle Wax ICE polish. Others here swear by Zaino products. Haven't used those myself .... yet.

Zaino, any wax from them is good. I use Mother's religiously though since you can buy it in stores locally.

For a quick shine, without any residue "Ice" is easy on-easy off.

I used Turtle Wax Ice after two years of using nothing. Results were amazing with only one coat. Very high gloss shine. Dunno how it looks on black, but it sure makes blues look good. If you met me at MVIV you saw my first TWI polish job. Just now needing a touch up. My car is garaged while at work, sits outside at home under oak tree on evenings and weekends.

Heres a pic from race day at MVIV. Please ignore the bugsplats on the bumper from the drive to Gainesville. ;)

If you want just a straight wax I recommend Turtle Wax ICE. If you want a cleaner wax then I recommend Meguires or Mothers. For a detail spray I only use Turtle WAX ICE detail spray as it's the only one you can use in the sun and not leave any residue. Also the ICE products don't leave any white wax residue at all.

I tried Turtle Wax Ice for the first time last weekend. Not the easiest in the world to apply/remove. Zymol is much easier, but Ice has a much deeper shine to it. It looks amazing on black. I followed that up with Meguires Quik Detail spray polish and that gives it even a deeper look. Good combo. If i would get off my butt and buy a Porter Cable 7336, that wax would be much easier to apply.. A good clay barring wouldnt hurt my car either..

I too just tried Turtle Wax ICE, and found it to go on and polish off pretty easily. Very nice Deep Deep shine more than it had before ICE, not bad considering I take good care of paint.

You must be doing something wrong. Read the bottle. Use only a couple drops at a time. If you put it on too thick, it is harder to get off because it doesn't dry like wax. I have been using it for a year and it is quite easy - ON and OFF. If I take my time, I can do the whole car in 20 minutes.

You need to use literally only three or four single drops of Ice on the applicator pad at a time. Those few drips will cover an entire body panel.

I used the past version also, and in the sun no less. The only thing I did not do was cover the whole car light they say on the can.
I start at the drivers side front fender/hood/bumper, then drivers side doors/roof, then trunk/drivers 1/4/bumper, than repeat on passenger side.

why's that ?
1. The only application problem with ICE mentioned in this entire thread pertains to the "paste" version.
2. My bottle of liquid ICE was $14.95 at Auto Zone.
3. I have used only 1" out of the bottle in one year (at that rate, I won't have to get another bottle til 2017).
4. Ease of use, application of liquid vs. paste
5. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Cheaper, easier, less problems, and less mess.

I agree..it would be easier, but i dont know, the liquid just doesnt seem right LOL

I really like the results of the paste ICE.. i would like to do a head to head comparison between the liquid and paste though.

Greetings!
I second Charlie's (Bluerauder) action on using Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax. I just finished doing Ol' Red for a car show next Saturday. I washed, clayed whole car, did a few touch-up spots, used the Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax. I now use this stuff on all of my cars.
This my second Clay job on the DTR MM. Hope to get to Ol' Blue later this week at night.
BTW, I have other things I use for scratches, etc. but my primary polish is the Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax. And, if you are anal like me, I mask all of my Black plastic trim like rocker panels, license plate bracket, mirrors, etc.

However, whatever polish you choose, enjoy what you are doing and admire the results!

Have been using Meguires "step 3 wax" on my GM. Really made the metallic come alive! Now, all i have to do is buy a nice glaze (Mothers I remember being easy to apply, leaving a surreal shine).

However, I will definatly buy the Ice to give that a shot.

Since the weather has been nicer, I have been washing and waxing 2 times a week.

I use Poorboys SSR2.5 (or 2 or 1), followed by some Clearkote Red Moose Machine Glaze (great on dark cars), with Pooboys Natty Blue paste wax (again great on dark cars) as a topper.

I like mother's products, they have a clay bar kit and a step process. Nice shine no swirls. I enjoy detailing my car so long lasting isn't that important to me.
My son use's Zanio , a little work to apply properly, but lasts a long time.
Zanio leather cleaner polish is very good.

There is a stocking distributor in MN, now. Actually in St. Paul, too!

Jdando or myself can help with any questions, too. I have been using it for a few years. It goes a loooonnng way, too. I can do my Impala with about an ounce of Z2 polish or Z5 swirl remover. The leather conditioner is awesome, too. A friend did a side by side test with Meguires and it was no contest.

Here are some pics of our daily driver, 108k mile Regal GS that just got Zaino'd.

How well does Ice hold up Paste or Liquid? :depress:

Wow. I must be el cheapo. In the cool to mild months I use Meguiars Gold Class. When it is miserably hot outside (even in the shade), I use Nu Finish because it isn't affected by the heat (easy on, easy off) and has IMHO an excellent shine and last longer than much more expensive waxes. Zymol IMHO is overrated and a bear to put on and take off (like most pure carnaubas). One of the best waxes I have ever used in terms of shine and durability is Dupont Teflon Car Wax. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find it in stores. I'm afraid it may be discontinued.

When I was younger, I swore by Liquid Glass (especially the cleaner - I took an old faded red pickup and made it look like it came off the showroom floor with 2 applications of the cleaner and one application of the sealant). My Dad and I used to use TR3 Resin Glaze (which started off as an aircraft product). You could spill brake fluid on that stuff and it wouldn't faze it. It's hard to find now as well. (It's also a bear to put on and take off).

Zymol sucks. But only because of how hard it is to apply and make it look decent. The shine and protection aren't too bad. It wasn't worth what they charged for it at least. I got much better results from Liquid Glass for the same price.

Professor

By the way, I just looked at Consumer Reports. They tested a bunch of car waxes and found that price is definitely not indicative of performance in gloss, cleaning ability or durability. The best performing wax on all factor except ease of application was Black Magic Wet Shine Liquid. My favorites were all in the top ten: Dupont Teflon (#5), Meguiars Gold Glass (#6) and Nu Finish (#7). The more expensive waxes like Zymol, Griot's, and P21S were all outperformed in gloss and durability by much less expensive waxes.

No matter which brand you use, their tests indicate you should wax at least once a month. Synthetic polymer waxes perform better for longevity/durability and carnauba waxes generally produce better shines. They found liquid waxes to be far superior to paste waxes in both gloss and durability (though they found paste waxes to be less streak prone and a little easier to buff out - though they felt that the gloss of the liquid waxes was worth the extra physical effort to buff out). They found spray on detailers absolutely useless. In fact, many of them remove the shine produced by liquid and paste waxes.

Turtle Wax ICE is not a wax. It is a polish only. I use it on top of Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax. Results are very good.

I'd be wary of using some products too much. Products like NuFinish have abrasives that will breakdown the clearcoat over time. (Happened to me many years ago)

Look at some of these tests.

For the same reason Haulnss just said, I use straight REAL WAXes, with no cleaners, unless I have enough swirls that warrant me using a siwrl remover before waxing. I have used Trewax Carnauba boat wax before (rock hard, impossible to remove, dries like paint, but lasts) and Meguire's Professional paste wax in the can (also a hard carnauba wax with no cleaners, also very hard to remove). I don't do the gimmicky cleaner/wax combos. Any of the waxes I use can't be found in your Walmart/Autozone.
