View Full Version : My Gas cap opens on its own
I have a 300a and in the past few weeks the gas door has popped open on its own about 5-6 times. Anyone ever had this problem?

No, check on the inside of the car via the trunk for something hanging up.
The doors are easy to adjust, just adjust it on a full tank in case you get it stuck.
Judging by the high cost of gas, someone may be trying to borrow some from you?

Check that the release handle in the trunk is free
and not hung up on something.

it is either electrical or mechanical in nature...disconnect the button wires and see if the problem continues...it it is fixed, then it is the switch or wiring...I would guess that the latch is worn or the catch is moved... and lastly heed the above advice and check the manual backup in the trunk if so equipped...

When I worked at FORD/LINCOLN/MERCURY we sometimes saw the lever on the fuel door bent from getting bumped with fuel fill nozzle. Take a look at it to make sure it catches solenoid post by more than a tiny bit, and if necc you can bend just the metal part on the fuel door without bending fuel door.

Can you tell if electrical or mechanical?
If electrical, this could be the cause...
Check your fuel door release button for consistant activation and no random activations in it's travel. If this is the cause, I can post pics of switch removal and breakdown. I had my switch fail on my '94 Vic a while back. It is the same as MM.

Maybe the trunk monkey was needing some attention????

Yep, that's another possible solution I didn't think of :)
But like so many threads, people post problems asking
for help/ideas and then they don't come back and
say if the problem got fixed and what the solution was.
It might help others down the road when they search for
symptoms / fixes.
