View Full Version : Aftermarket Hood for the Marauder ...

I want this hood!:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b132/beachdoc/mercurymaruderhood06.jpg
And I know I'm not the only one. We need to assess interest and negotiate with an aftermarket hood manufacturer. Frankly, there are a multitude of hood makers out there. I just don't believe that we can't get this done through one of them at a reasonable price. The excuse I have heard is that the Marauder is too rare to warrant making the molds. I just don't buy it. The Marauder is not that rare at 14,000 units. There are rarer cars with better options in the aftermarket. Plus, this type of hood would work on the LX Sport CV as well as any CV or Grand Marquis. That's a huge market. If not huge, it's at least big enough to warrant the molds.
How can we get this done? Let's not give up on this!!

Uh, the hood thing is dead.
Why? Last I heard, we tried one manufacturer. Are you saying that no one would buy this if it were available?

Hoods have been discussed MANY MANY MANY times here. Not enough folks could decide on any one hood style (folks who would actually pony up the funds that is).
Use the SEARCH Button for the history.

Kill. I did search. It seems to me that one manufacturer was approached and two alternatives were provided. Besides not agreeing on which hood to go with, it looked like the manufacturer wanted a commitment to buy from owners before even telling us how much they would cost and which hood would be the final design. I would think that a good hood manufacturing firm would be able to provide us with a cost up front and commit to a design. If those criteria were met, I bet we could get this done.

I would love to have that hood, but the hood threads fail everytime....I refuse to take part in another hood thread
Ahhhh crap....I just did

Best thing to do is get with a local customerize and come up with something on your own, just like Todd did.

This is true...I think. Been a while, so a few of the details are a little fuzzy. They wanted 20 pre-orders, of whichever type. They could not get 20 to commit to buy EITHER design.
If you are really wanting a custom hood, just get one made for roughly $700 -$800. Yeah, you're gonna pay more, but at least you will have one

No, the thing that should have been done was he should have came to us with ONE design and say take it or leave it. I know for one I placed money on that same hood, and I was bummed when it all died. As companies making this hood, for example, Cervini's would not make this for us unless they had probably over 100 orders to peak the interest.

Call me crazy, but it seems to me to be a fairly simple proposition. Surely a company would be able to commit to a mold on one of these at a specific price and a minimum number of pre-orders to commence production. For example, Company X says, "We'll produce these hoods for $400 dollars each with a commitment from 20 buyers prior to beginning production. Moreover, if we can get a commitment for 40 units within 60 days, we'll reduce that price to $300 per unit."
If someone will provide a list of reputable hood manufacturers and links to their websites, I'll begin the research.
I'd also like to know approximately how many members this website has for additional leverage.
Any takers?
That hood looks nice but I want a functional heat extractor. I would even buy an exact stock copy in fiberglass and mod it myself if we could get someone to make some..

I want to wait and see if there are any clearance issues that need to be addressed with the upcoming Trilogy Twin Screw...:rolleyes:This is a good question. Knowing how Jerry B. operates, (as in a true professional), I'd bet that there will be no clearance issues. It was that way with the original Trilogy.

that actually dont look all that bad,.....not only will it fit the marauder but it would also fit GM's and crown vics
I think you are underestimating the cost of producing a quality mold.

Yes, they are big time. Just ask Todd and his Turbo'd MM. Dennis had to fab up a hood for him and was very, very expensive. If we can get a company, I vote for a nice 2 1/2 to 3" Cowl with heat extraction. I don't see the big deal in the heat extraction and if it actually works or just "bragging" rights to say my engine gets cold air and blah blah. The reason why I said it should be heat extraction, is because some of the guys on here want that and if we get one that doesn't have that, they won't get one.

Blah blah blah. Here we go again...
Go buy a CV hood. Take it and the picture to your local custom shop. Pay. Install your new hood.
I'm sick of the hood thing. :puke:

EXACTLY what I did and what I'm going to do...
I've already bought a GM hood at the auto parts yard, and acquired several different 'top secret' scoops/vents.
Once I decide on the layout and have the $$ to cough up for a body shop, I'll have my own custom hood + the unscathed OEM hood!

Last time this damn hood argument came up I was the ONLY ONE who ponied up and paid for the Cobra R style... a few people (less than 10) paid for the dual scoop style.....
no production was able to occur due to low numbers. LOTS of people said they were insterested and could pay... but when it came to it nobody did. Don't bother bringing it up again cuz last time was the 3rd time it has cropped up. It never goes anywhere. Do it the easy way and buy some nice metal scoops and a CVPI hood at a junkyard. Have a local place do the work and paint it. It'll run you a few hundred dollars more than if a company carried fiberglass MM hoods but here are the pros
it'll be all metal and of OEM quality when done
no worries about hood pins and hood safety at high speeds
completely custom look
completely functional (if you have it done that way)
it'll actually be made instead of being a forum topic for years....
cons:
somewhat costly when compared to pre-made fiberglass hoods... instead of 400 it'll be a few hundred more... but it'll be a reality too

I contacted 10 different highly reputable hood manufacturers and put my best foot forward for the Marauder crowd. Not one of them responded to my inquiry. Days later somebody anonymously e-mailed me this link.

I want this dual scopp hood also.
I was in on the first buy.
I expressed my interested and voted.
We needed 40 votes for each hood for it to be made.
After everyone voted, we had enough people wanting hoods
to make all three designs.
Then it went dead...
I was NEVER notified of the status after that.
So when no one answered to pony up the $$$ to start production,
maybe it was because there was too much time passed between
the voting and the response, and no one tried to contact us all.
If we want to do this, we need to be proactive about it.

Just like djbruce26 wrote, people here voted for a hood and claimed they were interested, but when it came time to pay the deposit only a handful of people coughed up the money. You would be better off saving your time and sanity having a hood fabbed up at your local body and paint shop.
But if you really want to try this again, you may want to contact "The worlds fastest taxi" they are making a bodykit for the 1998-2006 crown vic like the one in the movie "Taxi". They may be interested in producing a hood.

I have that very hood and the Mach-1 chin spoiler sitting in the shop waiting install, just can't seem to pull the trigger on getting it down to the bodyshop... something about losing the sleeper look for good.

Stick on hoods would be an option for me IF they were functional. And I like the ram air look. But if I had a custom hood done myself it would have to be cowl. The heat extraction would be a benefit but since the cowl hood doesn't have to fight against airflow it seems to be the best choice for someone who would have it done/DIY. But if a stick on hood scoop could be functional and take the airflow of a car movin say 125mph done the track. It would be a nice option.

would be something like the 94 Mustang Cobra's. It looked stock, except it slopped up 2-3 inches as it approached the glass. It would be a COWL INDUCTION style hood. It should look really clean and classy, and use the stock lines, only taller in the back at the center area. No dis to Professor, but I really don't like that hood. Looks like a GM hood to me...
this is the idea: http://cervinis.com/ebay/117/117_(820x429).jpg
Not exactly like this. A little less tall, and it should not have a double step on the sides, but only the one factory step, just a little taller. It would be subtle, but you'd definitely know something was 'amiss'

I like the photoshopped hood Professor pointed out - but I also like your thoughts on 'subtle' How about a cowl induction that followed the OEM nose lines so instead of coming in flush at the windshield you have a 1.5 - 2.5 inch rise? No center ridge, keep it close to OEM.... :P
would mask the wipers a bit as well...
