View Full Version : Revving up at start-up
Can the rev-up at start-up be disabled? My car sometimes sits for a couple of weeks or so between me driving it, and I don't know if I like that revving to 2000 rpm when it first starts. Does that rev-up at start-up serve any legitimate purpose, or is it just a "Hey look at me" kind of thing?

a custom tune could probably remove it.
I think it may be legitimate though. My 2006 E250 with 5.4l does it, and the Milan V6 I had as a loaner did it. First start up anyway.

This is done to reduce emissions at start-up. It is not good for engine longevity. The engine flare at start-up can be reduced by changing a few things in the OEM engine calibration.

It's normal.
There was recently a discussion regarding this phenomenon.

And how do I do that?

It is annoying, and I assume not very good for the bands in the transmission, when I start the car, and 30 seconds later it is still at 1000+ idle, and I get tired of waiting and put it in gear. I have found though if I don't want to wait forever for the idle to come down, if you kick the gas it flares down like a carbed fast idle cam would kick off. Still annoying though, I agree!
My concern is that, after sitting for 2 or 3 weeks, the oil has all drained back down into the pan, and engine revving at startup does so when there is minimal oil protection. As noted, that can't be good for engine longevity.

Exactly why I installed a Canton Accusump Oil storage system.
My Marauder sometimes would sit for a week or two between drives and when I would fire it up it would REV UP and clatter like a b*tch!
Now I flick a switch and dump a quart of oil at 60+ psi into the oil galleries just as I fire off the engine....NICE and quiet!

Hey Joe, care to share where this nifty oiler thingy came from? I forgot about this little gadget of yers. It is a great idea for anyone who autocrosses their Marauder.
I kinda like the "flare up" when she starts. I love the "roar to life - look out b!tches here I come" attitude.

So you start your Marauder anywhere from 17 to 26 times in a year
and you are worried about this ???
I can sometimes start my Marauder 26 times IN A DAY.....

That's great Charlie! That should be the site motto!

My Cobra does the same thing. I think it is b/c the OHC engines are pressure lubed and not splash lubed like a pushrod motor.
I still don't like it !!!!!!

Yep, and when you are starting yours, it is at operating temp and there is oil in the engine. You are doing much less damage to your car than I am to mine.

It can be lowered with the Xcall John

Charlie, I posted all the details in the "Oil filter put on by a 450# gorilla" thread.
BTW: How do you attach an old post or link back to an old thread???:dunno:

Dennis did this for me back last winter.

And how do I do that?
Buy an XCal 2 from Alternative Auto or Reinhart Racing. It will come loaded with a a program which will recalibrate your powertrain control module. The XCal 2 connects to the OBDII diagnostic connector under the dash and will flash your PCM. This is the only viable way to lower your start-up flare. Many other things are usually changed as well. Both Reinhart & Alternative are supporting vendors for this site and have a lot of experience with these cars. Cost should be in the neighborhood of $300 - $400.

I already have an XCal2. Is there no way I can make that change?

I have it too on my '04. It sits for weeks without being driven but I start and drive it occasionally. Revving with no oil pressure kinda negates everything I have ever learned.

It is a value in SCT software that we can adjust and I can make the change and send you a new file
I'd appreciate that, Dennis!

joe, I noticed that you are using redline transmission fluid, how do you like it compared to the motorcraft trans fluid you had in their before.
