I'm looking to upgrade over my crappy little Kenwood head unit, would a flip screen have any clearance problems with the lip on the dashboard?

Yes.

Contact John Kuhn about an AVIC D3. Very nice unit.... :D

The flip-out DOES hit. I have an Eclipse that I located where the A/C controls were. I am replacing the A/C controls and going with a 2-DIN Eclipse unit soon though.

I got a package today delivered...a Pioneer AVIC-Z2. All I can say is it does almost everything. Double-din is the only way to go...looks like it was made for it. I couldn't stand pushing a touch-sensitive flip out screen and have it move...

You guys should really look at the new Alpine Double DIN units.
They got EVERYTHING...

As you probably realise with your Kenwood, user friendliness is very important. I have used an excellent high-powered Alpine head unit, but there is two things wrong with it...

1) it has many features, but they are overly complicated to learn and remember...

2) every time the battery gets disconnected, the Alpine "forgets" all the custom settings, and even shuts off the subwoofer! It has no internal battery or memory backup, so out comes the user manual, and I spend 10 or 20 minutes reprograming station memory and audio settings.

My (now discontinued) Pioneer AVIC-D2 navigation/do everything/double DIN takes a while to learn, but it is fairly user-friendly. I can almost always figure out how to do something, without looking in the "book".

Look in John's Stereo forum. D1 and D2 fit nice. D3 was just made for the car.

I thought about doing this but I think I will stick with a new 1 din no screen SACD play and get a Tape player as well. I have about 50+ books on tape plus another 50 + tapes that I don't have on CD.

I will pick up one of those Magellan Portable Nav units or a Tom tom.
