View Full Version : Here's one reason you lose 3rd & 4th gear

As you may or may not know, I met a guy by the name of Chris this past weekend due to this post..
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=36320&highlight=transmission+gear

He has an 04 Marauder with 29k on the clock.
All of the sudden, no 3rd or 4th gear. WTF, right?

He was quoted $2600 at the Ford dealer for a new transmission, not exactly easy to stomach :puke: He was later denied service all together after a warranty dispute.

So he came by on Saturday and dropped the car off, only knowing me for 5 minutes.
I got to work taking the valve body off, thinking it was the 2-3 accumulator piston to blame. They are known to roll the rubber lip and lose pressure, causing 3rd and 4th failure. It checked out ok so the trans came out. I then dropped it off to my friend at Ford.

Fast forward to today and the diagnosis is in: The direct clutch drum

Here's a pic of it as it should look:
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/DSC02681.JPG
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/DSC02682.JPG

Now here's where it failed:
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/DSC02683.JPG
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/DSC02684.JPG

The shaft is actually a seperate piece from the drum but the 2 pieces are joined together by what looks like a 'sonic' welding process, or a really high strength solder.
Real quality process huh? You cant even weld this together cause a torrington bearing sits on that surface and needs to be flat.

Although im sure its a fluke and quilifies for poor quality control, its still a major inconvenience for Chris.
Good news is, his bill is only $700, compared to $2600.
And the transmission is rebuilt.

And that kind of stuff is why it's worth sticking up for and putting up with Zack!

To clarify for the militant and weak minded....

Not only did he save a noob a boat load of money and aggravation, he shared the knowledge with us and the documentation is now on record. I challenge any other to contribute as generously.

Way to go, Zack. Way to go.

Yea, Zack like to push peolpe's buttons, when he knows he can. He loves the attention. And yes he has no tact.

But, he is always willing to help out people he hardly knows. Good work Zack.

Hey fellas,

I'm the noob that Zack is helping out. Thanks, Zack, and to the others on the board who chipped in with some opinions/help. Obviously Zack helped me save some $$$, but this is why I'm so glad sites like this exist. I am the original owner of a 99 Cobra that's been heavily modified, and before I ever go to a dealer, I always hit the enthusiast sites to see if other people are having the same issues/questions I am. This is a great site and an awesome source for info.

Thanks for the pics and the help.

Yup... looks like the same thing (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showpost.php?p=465674&postcount=13)that sidelined mine earlier this year. Unfortunately you weren't available to do the work at the time. Real quality part isn't it? Is an upgraded part even available?

BTW: You ready to do the rear cooling kit on mine yet? ;)

Would it do any good to pass on the defective part to Ford with vehicle info?

It might since it looks like the parts failed because of defect.

It would never get to the people who would need to see it. Most likely manufactured by more than one outside vendor.

The car is done.
Finished up around midnight.
Its bone stock with the J-mod done to it. Really makes the trans shift nice.

My plan is to find a used transmission, rebuild it with the J-Mod and keep it at the house ready to go for other members who need trans work in the future.

Nice work Zack. Good idea on the spare tranny!
I have over 50k miles on the J-mod and almost 70k on the clock. The best thing I ever did for a transmission!

You may want to consider keeping one with the Art Carr L1 done to it. I don't think it's much money for the parts...

When that kit can be done and understood by the average Joe, yes I will do it.
Until then, its better left to someone who is familiar with doing it.

That part may have been either a press fit that has spun or done at the factory as "inertial friction welding".
Either way, not that strong.:(

Add my ditto to the thanks for helping a member with tranny, or any other problem Zack. And where might we read about the said "J mod"?

I let the local service mgr. talk me into doing the BG Co. trans. fluid additive, which comes with a warranty for $2,500 as long as i have the service repeated every 30K miles. Is that really worth a hoot? I just took the guys' word for it, plus i do have the written warranty. Do you know if the 'J mod" would void the ESP warranty i just bought, or the BG Co. service warranty? Thanks, HRM
