My wife always reminded me not to pull into the garage untill the door was fully up cause mabey the something bad would happen. Well yesterday something bad happend. The door was 3/4 of the way up and the nose of my car headed in when bam!! The drive sprocket for the opener broke off and the door came falling back to earth. Unfortunaly my hood was still thier to keep it from its final destination. In addition to a small shallow dent the door also left 4 to 5 deep scars where the metal edge made contact. To make matters worse last week I spent 2 hours with my new Porter Cable 7424 polishing same said hood.:shake:

Ouch, sorry to hear it bro. I pulled into mine a little too far one day and crushed the front plate holder, I shut my eyes and leaned back waiting for the airbags to go off but they didn't, wasn't going THAT fast. Take some pics for us all to see.

Well.....it's all her fault. If she had never said anything, it never would have happened. :nono:

Be thankful it wasn't her head or worse yet one of the grandchildren it hit.

BTW, is that Porter Cable polisher cool or what? :cool4:

Question is, will she always remind you of what happened or let it go.
That is the question.

Sorry about the car. But look at the bright side. Your wife seems to support the love of your car. She never would've brought it up if she didn't care

Ron,

Sorry to hear about that door breakout. On the good side, it's better that that sprocket broke when there wasn't a pet or a child crossing under. The car will be repaired in no time ! :o

Hey -

Mine was safe IN the garage with the door closed when the spring decided to snap, sending one of the pulleys flying into the front fender. It sounded like a gun went off. I wandered around the house for 20 minutes trying to figure out what had fallen off a shelf, etc., until I saw the spring on the garage floor. The spring was 20 feet from where it hit the car, so I had walked around the rear of the car (where the spring is located by the door - both initially and after the apparent ricochet) and seen no damage and already breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the gray spot on the front just behind the turn lamp assembly. Nice deep chunk down to the metal.

:censor:

The angle of impact must have been very slight (due to the starting point and the distance traveled) so I can only imagine the damage if it had gone straight into the car - maybe a hole somewhere.

If I were to file this for insurance it's technically a home owner's claim with a much higher deductible AND I just made a claim for the tree that fell on my house, so the rates would obviously suffer, too.

$350 to strip/repaint the fender might just be better out of my own pocket. Or find a cheaper body shop.

My wife is cool, she won't remind me cause she know how much I care about my cars apparence. I spent about 3 hours last night with primer and touch up paint and got the hood looking ok for now. Still a slight crease that I can't massage out. I was planning on spraying the bupmer in the fall. Guess I'll be tackling the hood now too. I'll post pics later.

BTW love the Porter Cable. A must have for owners of a black car and only $99 on ebay!

...A neighbors son was killed by an overhead door. He was working security for extra money before Christmas at the local convention center. While standing under a huge overhead door, something "let go", and the door came down on him, killing him instantly.

When I installed my first one, I was surprised how heavy a simple 7'x9' steel garage door is. With dual springs, the door shouldn't drop all the way down when one spring breaks.

They now make (and supply new doors) with safety cables, that reduce the possibility of of sharpnel hitting something when a spring breaks. They are inexpensive, easy to install, and should be retrofitted to old doors.

I discovered when hand polishing with Turtle Wax Ice that the paint on the panels of my car that had been repainted by my Ford dealer were far smoother and had far less crud in the paint than the still-original paint panels. So there is a silver lining to the dark storm cloud even though the sexpense will hurt. I paid out of pocket for some relatively minor stuff, but now State Farm is having to cough up for the biggie. I will have a new hood, front bumper, grille, header panel etc. at least one of the front fenders has to be replaced. Also my a/c should be super extra frigid and a new battery too. Oh yeah...radiator too!

Lay something straight across the dent. It should show the dent.
