Many MMs had issues with fuel gauges reading improperly. Check your owner's manual for how much is supposed to be in the tank when the light comes on, but it's a crapshoot. Mine's been on several times but I've never been able to put more than 16 gallons in it at fillup.

I put 18.xx gallons in when I got to Michigan. The fuel light had been on for maybe ten miles.

I Think There Is Like 4 Gallons When Lowfuel Light Comes On.

To the E line is about 16.2-16.5 gallons...Below the E line is 17.2. If you go ever farther than that, which i call "WAAAAY BELOW THE ****G E", youre at about 18.2 to fill up.

If youre getting more fuel than that, you're gettin ripped. Believe me, i've played around with this little experiment..

FYI, it is a 16 Gallon gauge on purpose, I believe.

If I get gas as soon as the low fuel light comes on it takes about 4-5 gallons, and gauge shoes a little less than 1/4 tank. They should have made it come in when you have 2-3 gallons left. In the Explorer I had when the fuel light came came you were on fumes, less than a gallon left. That was too extreme.

I am not even sure if the "low fuel" even light works on my MM. Don't believe that it has ever been lit in the past 45 months. I always fill her up between 1/4 and 1/8 tank. Don't see much need to press too hard on the "E".

use to be at 16 gallons used 3 to go.
Since the pump was changed 15 gallons used 4 to go.
To find out on your car, you'll need to fill up as soon as your light comes on... then do some math.
It's good info to have.

Mine usually comes on with 3-4 gallons left.

After my light comes on, I can usually (safely) get 50 highway miles until I get really nervous.

I have put 19.2 gallons in my tank. Of coarse, the filling station may have not been properly calibrated. I would love to work for weights and measures and check a lot of filling stations out.....

One question? Why push it?

"E" stands for "not-enough"!

A full tank holds 19 gallons.
So when you at the point when the light comes on,
pull in to a station and fill up.

Most of the time, mine will take about 15 - 16 gallons.

But BigDog, didn't you ever wonder "how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie roll toostie pop?"

Same thing.... I just Gotsta' know...

I have done this with every car I have ever owned. "Know your limit"

Sorry but when you see fuel pumps fail because people do this out of a bad habit then you tend not to push when it's going to cost you $$ out of your pocket, a few times will not hurt but where in our vast network of gas stations are you ever that far away from a new load?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I agree with Bigdog on this. Why push it?

But wait, you guys have me all wrong. I don't do it often at all. I do it at least once, just to know where the needle falls and the limit to which I can safely travel in a necessary situation.

You have to have fuel over the fuel pump motor to cool it... running in air is hard on the pump and will cost ya moolah.. I can typically go 50 miles in a CV after my light activates... two gallons...

Yes the pump is liquid cooled, air is the ememy, once or twice will not harm your pump, why chance it? most Ford fuel pumps cost over $700. installed.

I like to run my tank as empty as possible in certian situations, especially if 100 octane follows a batch of 93. I have driven between 25-30 miles after the light comes on before I filled up. I won't go any further than that.

When tha light goes on = go for fuel.
The fuel gages vary, when the light goes on there is approx. 2 - 4 gallons left.

This would be a good test for anyone with a ScanGauge I or II. I have not been to the light since i've had mine and had not thought about doing so. I usually do a miles to empty check on long trips, but normally fillup at a half a tank day to day driving.

I was on the highway today and fuel light came on, I really did not want to stop so I stretched it to home. The needle was touching E dead on, upon filling the tank it only took 16.7 gallons. With tank alone not counting filler neck car still had 2.3 gallons remaining.

Mine takes just under 16 gallons if I fill up as soon as I see the light. You won't know what yours takes until you do the same...;)

This may be the easiest question to answer on the forum. Bluerauder, our cars have a bulb test for the Low Fuel light, as soon as you turn your key 2 positions forward, if working, your Low Fuel light will light for about 1 second.

Just be staring at the top left of your dash or you might miss it.:)
