View Full Version : Are headers worth it?

Now that I have the Procharger #30 I was looking into getting headers or possibly a complete exhaust system. From what I heard it's 2 grand, but it really benefits for our cars when they are blown. Can anyone here say how much power they gained off of headers or a complete exhaust system and the difference in 1/4 mile time?

Thank you! :)

AS RC has referred in his post # 2-- Yes--from Rich's ref. post his showed a gain of 15----
Actually, I am suprised that a blown MM already is without an upgraded exhaust system , headers, etc.--normally the MM woulds already have that at about the 300HP range and then the blower comes along--however I realize that many did it differently--it was in the beginning done this way as most of us beginners did it--

In either case--YES--DO IT!

I believe Mac got about EQUAL POWER from the Cobra Kit, and the Kooks Kit on his KB car.

Give him a call and see what his input would be.

Is there any advantage of a complete exhaust system over just headers? Like the x pipe and different mufflers or is that just for sound?

RCSignals

If you want that nice ricer sound, use an X pipe :)

Now is it true that if I upgrade to a full exhaust system I can run more boost? I thought I would need more mods, this is just something I was told.

No, you cannot run more boost if you add an exhaust. You would need to have a built motor to safely handle more than 450RWHP... especially the way you are going tobe driving

An engine is nothing more than a giant air pump. You are now forcing more air in. If you let it out faster, it will give you a wee bit more power.

With that being said... do you REALLY THINK that $2000 for 30RWHP is worth it at this point?

Hey! I have a Kooks X-Pipe. Does my MM sound like a ricer? You got plenty of views from the rear on your last visit.:burnout:

I agree.

If I were to upgrade my exhaust at this point, I would buy a set of Cobra Manifolds, and a matching H-Pipe (or have one custom fab'd). Then run that to whatever mufflers I decided on and Extended Tips (res del's...or stock). FAAAR cheaper than the Long Tubes, and damn CLOSE performance.

KillJoy

PS - even the Ford Shorties would work, but they are around $300. Cobra Manifolds are about $20 :D

Are you still planning a tuning session?

Sometime this summer. It appears to have self-adjusted itself a little leaner, as on our last group outing, it was reported that my exhaust fumes no longer make your eyes water.

Did you try setting the boost-a-pump to 10? It might have been put on 20.

As you drive it the computer probably has been making some adjustment itself to fuel?

Then I was mistaken told, or misinformed by Mac.

So....what WAS the actual outcome? Did one "make" more power than the other? How much, and where from?

'03 Cobra Manifolds, '03 Cobra X or H Pipe, ~4" Entensions for the X or H Pipe, and some minor fab work for you EGR Tube (unless you eliminate the EGR).

Are the Cobra manifolds worth the effort/work over our stock exhaust manifolds? and will they hurt the performance on an NA car?

Yep headers (SW longtubes are) See my sig and my last 1/4 mile time.

Are the Cobra manifolds worth the effort/work over our stock exhaust manifolds? and will they hurt the performance on an NA car?The Cobra manifolds will not hurt the performance of an N/A car, but if installed by themselves are probably not worth the effort, unless you got them for a REALLY good price. I did notice an improvement when I installed the complete package from Dennis (manifolds and X-pipe with high-flow cats) back when I was N/A.

Why replace a manifold with a manifold?

I have the SW longtubes like Big House. He's got me by less than 1 tenth in 1/4 ET. I have stock suspension, and no UD pullies.

Get the headers.

Because they flow more than stock, allow pre made X/H Pipes to mate up, are cheaper and are easier to install.

It's still a manifold. A manifold is a manifold is a manifold. You can do anything with exhaust you want, as long as someone capable is doing it. My system is custom, and wasnt all that expensive to install.

The SW longtubes are over $1000 aren't they? Thats just too much for me right now! Spent toooo much money with my training at Blackwater with more to come and this new motor that wasn't expected hurt the pocket! Trust me, owning 2 other Turbo vehicles I would LOVE to SC the Rauder and make it Rock!!!!!

I would highly recommend the Stainless Works long tune headers. At the rate you are going with mods, do it!. You will lose some boost, but pickup horsepower on the big end. Plus they will sound awesome. Headers create power, period. In a blown application sooner or later you will need to go to long tubes headers. Do it now and get it over with. You will not regret spending the money. But thats my opinion. :burnout:

In some manner they seem similar but BW is by far the Biggest!! I looked into their site and training and the only courses that they show on their website are from 2006, whats up with that??? Go to blackwaterusa.com and read into everything they have to offer. This last course that I attended there was 2 guys from Hawaii and 2 guys from Vegas, that should say a little about how good BW really is if someone is willing to travel that far to train there. Let me know if I can help at all.
