OK guys,

I've got the results on the 'cold' air intake from K&N. It's worth 12 hundreths (.12 of a second) on the 1/4 mile.

For those of you wondering if it's worth correcting your times, consider this: without correction, the kit showed an abysmal 6 hundreds (.06) improvement, enough to make a grown man cry, after all that money and labor.

BUT, after correction, there is a considerable improvement: .12 seconds.

When testing, please record temperature, humidity, pressure and altitude and then go to http://www.modulardepot.com/density.php to correct your slips.

I was hoping for 2/10s, but I'll take it. I thought a 17 HP improvement would get me more... and it would... Listen to this...

K&N says it's worth 17 HP, but after running it, I went back and more carefully examined the literature, and the supplied Dyno graph. K&N IS NOT REPORTING PEAK TO PEAK, BUT IN A SLIGHT OF HAND, PEAK TO LESS THAN PEAK. This inflates their numbers, and makes it sound better than it is. They are comparing their peak which occurs at one RPM to the stock figure at the SAME RPM, which is NOT the HP peak. Their setup makes Peak at a little less RPM...:argue:

TRUTH BE TOLD, PEAK TO PEAK ON THEIR CHART IS 12 HP, ***NOT 17HP***:mad2:

Anyway, that being said, I have to say THIS THING MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN DRIVEABILITY, AND THROTTLE RESPONSE. IT'S WORTH IT JUST FOR THAT. The car is SO MUCH MORE FUN TO DRIVE.

ALSO, THE SOUND! THE KIT MAKES THE MOTOR SOUND LIKE IT OUGHT TO, NOW! It just screams, it's totally awesome.

So, their you have it: 12 HP, NOT 17 HP as claimed, and 12/100s on my car, with big improvement in driveability. Their graph indicates that its worth 5-10 HP even at low RPM, and I don't doubt it.

CAVEAT EMPTOR: This kit is probably not as 'cold' as the factor kit. The factory setup is completely enclosed, with a snorkel that exits the engine compartment. Their kit has a shield, with huge areas unprotected, letting in lots of engine compartment heat.

I'D LIKE TO SEE SOMEONE COME UP WITH A SEALED CAI, AND A BEEFY SNORKEL THAT GOES TO THE FOG LAMP. You could delete the lamp as an option and have RAM AIR. That would be my dream. You would have to relocate the air pump for the suspension...

A simple change in air temperature and density can give you that .12 reduction in ET, without any mods at all.

However, I have the K&N kit, and on a dyno it was worth an average of 7 to 8 RWHP, after 3 or 4 pulls.

Thanks for the info. That sounds about right.

You are correct. Air temp alone could give you a .12 second gain.

THAT'S WHY I CORRECT ALL MY DRAG RUNS, MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I encourage all to do the same by entering their data here:

Really??? Who's doing it?
What did your car run, it's got a nice tune on it.

This is just opinion, but I don't correct anything. You run what you run. People here will agree, and people will dissagree. If you're not fast enough for your liking...then save up and make it fast. Thats the fun of having this car.

I correct my runs so I can make useful and meaningful comparisons between my car and others, as well as changes I make to the car. You stated that the gain I made could have just been a weather change. I agree with you, it could have been. But it wasn't. Why do I know? Because I correct my times! It eliminates the question of the change being weather, or an actual power gain.

By the way, dyno results should be corrected, also. You could easily have a 7-8 HP gain on a motor, just from a change in temperature, humidity, or pressure. Even if the run is made the same day, and the temperature is close, you won't know what happened to pressure...

The weather factors are corrected by the dyno, That is what the dyno weather station does. You can access uncorrected #'s, if you want to feel better.

Didn't know that dynos came with built in weather stations. That's great.

I'll have to check my time slips but I think they print the weather info on them at Gateway.

I took mine last year and made two passes stock, two with the K&N and then two with Lidios tune. All in all, it dropped .7 and picked up MPH but I can't remember how much. None of those were corrected though.

I want to take it over with the 4.10's and 93 octane tune to see what it does now.

k&n or jlt. What are jlt's true numbers? I don't know which one to purchase.
