This morning I went to have my new 3.0 pulley installed and encountered an unusual problem. After romoving the pulley it was brought to my attention that something was wrong.

Apparently the Half Moon Key that sits on the end of the pulley shaft had been broken off http://www.motorcitymarauders.com/forums/images/smilies/mad.gifOnly after getting the remaining broken piece off Did I realize how bad it was . Luckily there was a shop across the street that had all sorts of nuts/bolts so we gave it a shot and luckily they had one similar in size but it had to be filed down a bit. 30 minutes later it was shaped properly but wouldnt stay on while trying to put on the pulley...After a few migraines and a few anurisms we finally got it in place and installed the pulley.

After getting home I checked the 3.2 pulley and found nothing so I decided to take a look at the original 3.4 pulley for the rest of the half moon key. Well I'll be damed to hell, the other piece of the key was still stuck on the 3.4 pulley.http://www.motorcitymarauders.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif http://www.motorcitymarauders.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif Just my luck

Has anyone ever had this problem. Im curious as to how the key is supposed to be inserted and secured.I was told that they just slip right in and the pressure from the pulley and the tention from the belt would keep it in place with no problems..

Is there an actual half moon key replacement piece that doesnt have to be fabricated, just in case the one created today goes south again.I just know with the crappy luck I have it will fail again somwhere down the road...

What would the worst case senerio have been if the key had broke off completely. Would the pulley come flying off, belt snapped or worse?????

I have a few pics of the broken key and the new key. I'll post them up sometime later on.

This is a "woodruff" key. Help me out a little. They usually use a woodruff key on the crankshaft pulley/ballancer/harmonic damper. I'm not S/Ced so I don't know if the pulley on the blower uses one of these as well.
In any case, the key is not to retain the part on the shaft but to keep it from spinning on the shaft and/or to index it to the shaft for timing purposes.
If you spin the crank pulley you loose your ignition timing and balance (not to mention you'll chew up the crank snout pretty bad).
You'll loose boost if you spin the blower pulley on the shaft - also severe damage to the blower drive shaft and inside of pulley.
Filling a key to fit is not entirely uncommon. Having one made from high quality steel from a known, reputable source would be good insurance.
