....and did you spend the dollars to correct to your liking ?

I did the Flow Master 50 series w/ delete tips extended 1.5".
I definately wanted to avoid the cabin drone of the Super 40's.

I don't like the look of the extended tips vs. the stock location.
The sound could louder, but I THINK ? I can live w/ my decision ??

If I could do it again, it would be Delta Flow 40's w/ the stock tips.
I could have saved a couple of hundered bucks.

I talked a friend into just the Delta Flow 40's on his Marauder (he hasn't done it yet) & I'm still waiting to see if I can live w/ my decision.

I had my orig mufflers removed completely for a while. Sounded awesome, but was loud at even fairly low throttle levels. Droned a lot for rear seat passenger on a long trip. Got to where I loved it half the time, hated ti half the time. Added 14 inch magnaflows, now pretty quiet when I drive sedately and sounds great ehwn I push the pedal down hard. I had a minor annoying rhythmic resonance in the cabin at stoplights, experimented and cured it by raising the idle with my xcal2. Don't think I will make any other changes for a while.

Funny part is that a number of other local Marauderer friends of mine had their mufflers deleted also and I was the only one to go back and have mine quieted back down. :)

I don't think any mod is more subjective than the exhaust. What one person likes another doesn't. I find recorded sound clips useless.

In my case I wanted JUST a little bit more sound but not much more than that. I put the Reinhart Cobra exhaust (headers and X-pipe) on mine. That little change running through the stock mufflers gave me just what I wanted.

But I would spend extra dollars to change it if I didn't like it. That is what cars about... modify until you get the effect you want. The actual cost is really immaterial to the end result. Otherwise, you are unhappy with the car which to me is more troublesome than spending the extra dollars to get it "right".

I like that, your exactly right on.

The sound of 50's w/ the deletes are acceptable.
It's the extended look of the tips that I'm having trouble living w/.

Round 1: $200
Stockers replaced with 18" magnaflows:
Deeper tone, tiny SOTP difference.

Round 2: ($125 parts), $200 labor (shop owner hungry and bored)
Del tips (ext 1in), 18" replaced with 14" magneflows, 2nd cats deleted, custom 2.5" from 1st cat to muff, custom 2.25" Hpipe.
Deeper, angier, meaner tone. Little bit of drone (nothing the stereo couldn't overcome, nothing you couldn't easily talk over). Big SOTP difference. Could now break tires loose (20" nitto 420s SUV tires) w/o power brake.

Round 3: $724 parts/shipping, $300 labor
Stainless works headers, all cats deleted
Load as HELL!!! But not INSIDE the car. I think it's actually quieter inside. At WOT, inside, I hear the air WHOOSHing through the pipes, but the sound from the tips is deafening. Made my ears ring in the dyno room. I only hear the 'loudness' if under an overpass or near some other sound reflecting object. Gained 13HP and 8T (peak at wheels), but gained 100HP at 2500RPM!

see this thread: http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=36625&highlight=dyno

Would I have changed anything? Nope! My good friend, Mario did Rounds 1 and 2 work and I learned a ton! Round 3 was done at DR's and I was fortunate enough to help and work with Steve to get the exhaust back just right. I feel I received bargains and value all along the way and am grateful for the education, comradery, and experiences along the way!

I'm still mufflerless, love it, but am paranoid I'll get a ticket for it. The drone could be bad at times, but you start to tune it out on long drives. In fact I'd like to put original mufflers back on and run an adjustable cutout to bypass the mufflers when needed. Other MMer's say it sounds good, I'm not sure myself, but I'll take their word for it.

Most are encouraging, but I'm not sure that the neighbors like it. I normally leave at about 6:30 in the morning, but am respectful enough to pretty much idle out of the neighborhood.

One guy at my work actually asked me the other day if I had headers on my Chevy, because it sounded so good. He and I had a little discussion after that. He now knows that I don't drive a Chevy.

Changing exhaust systems to find the right sound you like can happen as often as changing your pants. The best thing is to listen and ride and various Marauders that have different exhaust setups. I went from DR Cobra Exhaust system to 3 different Flowmaster mufflers. Started with Delta 50's then to Delta 40's, then to Super 40's and finally back to Delta 50's. But there is a big difference once you add the DR Cobra manifolds/exhaust from the stock manifold in sound and performance. And even more of a change once you go to Stainless Works Longtubes which I have now with a complete 2.5" pipes and 4" delete tips. The whole system with the Delta 50's sound great and I have no cats. And nice and quiet on the highway. Not so around town though:eek:. But I like that.:D

Daaaahhh....your right John:eek:. Somehow I forgot about those puppies. Oh yeah, I have QTP electric cutouts behind the longtubes as well. They are only loud with they are open. ANd they can push a ricer off the road at a set of lights when they are open:lol:. Glad to see my buddies are looking out for me.

I did mine in four stages in search of the old school burble and no cabin drone!!:shake:

I ended up with MagnaFlow Hi-Flow cats.....custom "H-Pipe".....18" MagnaFlows to stock tail pipes and tips.:beer:

Outstanding sound.....burble.....and power!!:bows::bows:

I did not and still do not like the tips extended past the bumper so they are stock and no cabin drone at any speed!!:D

I have noticed the system has gotten a bit louder over the past six months but not too loud!!:shake:

I have Borlas with stock tips. It has a bit more gurgle and smooth sounds on the road.

I'm happy with them.

I have stock manifolds, cats and a Grand Xpipe w/Magnaflow mufflers to the stock pipes/tips. The sound level inside the car actually decreased, and have no cabin drone. The rumble has become lower, and I absolutely love it!

I have a set of delete tips to install but don't know whether or not to extend them out or leave them in the factory position.

First mod I did was put on some Super 40 mufflers. Then after while it wasn't loud enough for me so I just got rid of the whole back section exhaust and ran side pipes right off the H-pipe (no mufflers). It was pretty darn loud and got peoples attention (snaps fingers). Only had them on for about 3-4 weeks before I couldn't take the interior drone which gave me a headache everyday.

Went and had my Super 40s and res-delete tips installed and a year later (few months ago) had both of my rear cats removed. For the piping being mostly stock size I will say it will rumble and I'm usually heard before I'm seen so for now I am happy until I get some LT headers, high flow cats, custom H-pipe with 2.5 piping to Super 44s and then do 3" to the tips.

Kooks headers with X pipe, Magnaflow hi-flow cats, 18" Magnaflow stainless mufflers and delete tips. Love it! Only change I have made was to replace the tips with the 4" version. Phat pipes is good.

I bought my marauder with some exhaust work already done by the previous owner. I have the stock manafolds, x-pipe, hi-flow cats, flowmaster delta 40's, res-delete tips, and the stock tune. The car sounded great, but it had a painfully loud cabin drone and I hated it. I was considering buying the stock tips to put back on, but I bought a tune from Reinheart first. As an unexpected bonus, the new transmition shift program completely removed the cabin drone. It turns out that locking out overdrive till 50 mph allowed my engine to skip over the rpm band that was causing the drone, which was present from 30 - 50 mph. Now I am very happy with my exhaust sound.
