Hi John,

I would like to replace the stock subwoofer. Do you carry a DIRECT REPLACEMENT for it? If not, one that requires the absolute little as possible modifications to install it? Prices and availability are appreciated!

Thanks!

Donnie

Anyway, as far as we the collective have surmised, there is no direct replacement for the sub. A few are close but no exact.
As far as all in one, less space type of sub a few have went with the Infinty Basslink I. Has a 200 watt amp and a 10" active and passive sub. Bread fan has a right up on his install. Search here on the site for Basslink.

I will not be spending $300 for a new one thats for certain. I guess I want to know what size the factory one is 1st off. Then try and find one that's close and do the best I can

Thanks

Guys look into the MTX thunder linw at WWW.mtx.com (http://www.mtx.com) as it is 200.00. Its a single 10 with a 100 watt RMS built in amp and not real hard to install. If you need one PM me.

Furthermore I can walk you thru an install which will not require running additional wires.

As for the physical install, there is no direct replacement at all. Not even for the woofer element itself.

The Basslink is a reasonably priced replacement and one which requires no wiring over and above the factory wiring slightly rewired. It is also a performance upgrade.

I did the real cheap fix and got more sound. Took out the factory sub enclosure, unmounted the amp from it, then remounted the factory amp in it's location. With having a previous 12" Radio Shack (75 watt rms/150 watt max) I went to Wal-Mart and bought one of their "build-it-yourself" subwoofer boxes, slapped the sub in it, extended the lead wires coming off the amp and connected them to the sub. Works great and is enough for me now without hearing the annoying sound the old one made. Any cheap 10" or 12" that requires around 100 watts max will work just fine and then just get a box for it.

The new shallow mount Pioneer 8" is free air capable. I wonder if one could just enlarge the factory hole slightly, put a 12" square of dynamat around it, cut the 7"-ish hole in the mat and drop the sub in with sheet metal screws. Run it off the factory amp.

Whadya think, John?

I have had this idea for a while, I would not run one off the factory amp. The only potential problem is that the package tray is not totally sealed from the trunk, I guess we have to see.

I think it would work ok but make sure that you dynamat the package try to help stop rattles and seal it better. I have these in the GM and they work good in the enclosure which is under .5 cubic feet. Power handling goes down in free air applications also. Rich what is the power output of the factory amp? You should have at least 50 watts to run one of these.

Exactly what I was thinking. I think the factory amp is around 30 rms and 70ish peak. With the drop in PH for IB, I think it would be a good match. Also, with the very small amount of SPL at that low power lever and small cone area, I think the trunk is sealed enough.

If someone wanted to try it, there's not much to lose. Heck, I'd even take the phone call and tell 'em where the problem areas are to seal if it even needed additional sealing.

I used to COMPETE with Pioneer free air 10's. Had 4 in a wall. Used the same design in 2 different cars and I used every model (there were 3) as they came out. Pulled mid 140's at 28Hz on a Premier 1020 (600W Class A) to all 4! BOOYAH!
