Dang it! My first problem with the Marauder.

I was heading into town today and the car shuddered pretty good under light throttle. I'd say it's deffinately a miss. Almost a 'dead' miss, but NO CEL came on.

It's an '04 with 52k miles and is stone stock other than CA's and SS inserts.

What should be checked/replaced? Plugs, coils, or coil connecters? If these are 100k plugs would it hurt to change 'em out now? Also, is loosing a coil at 52k a common thing?

Thanks.

Most find that the 100k plugs are in need of replacement well before that - a nice new set of plugs may help. Don't forget your anti-seize and a torque wrench!

Unfortunately I don't know of a test for the coil packs other than swapping them around if you get a code for a certain cylinder. I think there was discussion about more detailed tests earlier, and in my opinion the best test would be to have each pack tested on an electrical engine analzer, that would show you the output for each in a graphical oscilliscope-ish format and would allow a troulbeshooter to analyze each one.

I know such analyzers exist but not sure if they do for ignition packs or for Fords. I've had a thought in the back of my head to hook up my oscilliscope to my coil packs maybe I should try it and see what they look like.

Also ...watch out for those cheap skinny springs (plug connectors) they damage easily...and may not seat properly...ALOHA

I'd monkey with the car myself but I have to have it in St. Paul Mn on saturday for the Car Craft show and I'm in the middle of a remodel right now.

This pretty much rules out buying aftermarket stuff or diy. Dang it! :depress:

I'll keep everyone posted on repairs and price.

Sometimes a small miss will not generate a code which can make troubleshooting difficult but from what you described that probably should have if it were a bad coil. But...we'll see!

The car was before noon today. For a bunch of tractor mechanics, these guys are fast! It was a coil on #4 cylinder. They thought water had gotten under the coil cover and rusted it.

They didn't have the bill ready for me when I picked it up today so I'll stop in next week and find out when I write the check.

Are coil cover gaskets available seperately? Has anyone else's leaked?

YEP.....my #3 & #4 have had water in them!!!:argue::mad2:

Take the coil cover off and add silicone across the top and back (where main wire bundle is) and reinstall....PROBLEM FIXED!!!:beer:

PS: If you spray water on your engine to wash it....remove the cover to double check and blow out with compressed air as necessary!!

The cost was $165 for a new coil and plug. They were all done with the car by the time I got there so I wasn't able to tell them to change all the plugs. Oh well. I'll change all the plugs at 60k miles and be done with it.
