View Full Version : Do Resonators Cost Power, Or Deaden Sound Only? Drawing Of Cross Section Needed.

Hey gang,
What do you guys know about these resonators? I know that Innovative Interceptors is selling the delete tips, but I don't know what they are worth...
I'm looking for more power cheap, AND more volume and need some guidance on the RESONATOR ISSUE. I have scoured this site for details about the RESONATOR DELETE modification, but have been UNABLE to understand well how the resonators work...
One poster said they are basically a larger pipe fitted over the stock diameter straight end pipe...
1. Is this accurate?
2. If so, does the inside pipe really have the same diameter as the rest of the exhaust system?
3. Has anyone tested them on a dyno???
Could someone post a DRAWING of the CROSS-SECTION of one of these things?
I'm trying to figure out if there is ANY POWER in changing them out, or will it be for sound only???
If they are designed like MUFFLERS with chambers, or restrictions, please describe in detail or post a drawing.
IF THESE THINGS ARE STRAIGHT THROUGH, WITH JUST A MEGAPHONE ON THE END, I SEE NO POWER IN REPLACING THEM. Absent anyone's dyno results, I will seek to delete the cats, and MAKE POWER AND SOUND in that manner.
I look forward to any input friends, and happy cruising!

I believe they are basically similiar to a glass pack, I could be wrong. The only benefit to deleting them is more sound. I doubt there is appreciable power to be gained. If there was everybody would be swapping the OEMs out for delete tips.

Thanks Rayjay,
When I looked down them with my flashlight, it looks like a SMOOTH straight pipe nearly to the end, but seems there is some kind of opening at their beginning, hard to tell...
So, if we did compare them to glasspacks, we would probably have to compare them more to the perforated variety, than the kind that had those nasty 'gills' that protruded into the airstream, and use to cost so much power. Thanks for the input.
Anybody have a drawing of how they work?

I don't think you'll get a measurable HP increase going with the resonator-delete tips. You will increase the sound.

Reasonable opinions, I'm sure. I appreciate your input...
Has anyone tried RESONATOR DELETE on a dyno?
Anyone have a corrected timeslip, before and after?
Has anyone taken one of these things apart, and can testify that the design won't hurt power?
I'd like a more technical, definitive response if possible, though 2 cents are welcome!!

Check with Wes Chain @ Innovative Interceptors, one of the vendors here. Or contact Cone Engineering aka Megs who made the tips for the MM.

Its a sound mod not a power mod.

Thanks Blackend, fastblack,
Checking with Innovative is a good idea. Hopefully he will have something concrete to go on.
Anyone have any data of their own?

There doesn't seem to be any ambiguity in the answers you already received. I understand you're trying to get the best return for your hard earned $ BUT I think you may be over analyzing this one.
The tips change the sound. That's it. To gain HP over the stock setup, you'll need to open it up (headers or cobra manifolds). The change in exhaust flow from just switching the tips is so minimal as to be inconsequential.
Think of it as auditory bling. :beatnik:

Hi Brute,
Thanks for your opine. There is no ambiguity in the opinions that I'm getting, you are correct. Opinions based on guesses have some value...:)
If no one has run data on it, much less dyno data, I would at least like some 'seat of the pants' data!
If someone could explain exactly how they are constructed, or how they work, that would help too. I may have to contact Wes, to get that...

Fastcar,
What has been your experiences with removing Resonators on other cars been?

The exhaust has cooled down so much by the time it has reached the very end of the exhaust, that those resonators are going to make so little difference in power it is not worth dyno'ing. You'd probably find like a 1 hp difference.

Hi Daily!
Never done it, never had any on my other rides.
By the way, I tend to agree with the consensus: if I had to guess, I'd say there would be little gain.
...But, if someone was able to reproduce a 2-3 HP improvement on multiple dyno runs, I think it would then be worth it.
There are so many mods for these cars that people spend big $$$ on that gain 5-15 horsepower, I'm just surprised this isn't something that's documented... It's probably not sexy enough!
I bet if it was on a Mustang, it would have been tested, evaluated, analyzed, etc. It would be so well documented, there would be no question what it'd be worth.
It seems that there hasn't been much interest in evaluating it. If you think it's worth something, you delete them, if not, and you like quieter, you leave them on... Nothing to go on but an educated guess...
I'd still feel better if someone at least knew how they were designed. I'll email Wes tonight or tomorrow. If I get any good info from him, I'll post it here.

It will cost more to determine if there is a gain than the delete tips + install cost.

Great point RayJay, anyone that went to the dyno shop just to test delete resonator would need his head examined. It would have had to have been one of several mods tested during a day on the dyno. I could see someone tweaking their tune after other mods, and then be like, 'Hey, lets take these off and see what happens...'

Hey Quota,
You've got them, I can see from your signature (delete resonators). Are you basing your assessment on 'seat of the pants', or something else? Thanks for posting.

At approx. 240 RWHP, a 2-3HP increase is around 1.25%. You could do a dyno on two different days and have that much as a variable. The whole stock exhaust system is already a bottleneck to power. Eliminating the resonators isn't going to push more exhaust through your system. I doubt you could feel a 1.25% increase via SOTP. A garden hose puts out the same maximum volume of water, no matter what the nozzle is on the end. You need a bigger hose to get more volume.
There are many other things to focus on that would bring you more HP & TQ, especially a new tune. Now THAT will make a seat-o-the-pants difference and WILL show up on a dyno.

Thanks MM03MOK,
Seems no one has tried deleting them on a dyno because the consensus is they don't do anything but decrease volume.
As you point out, they may not show up within the 'margin for error' of the equipment.
There is probably significantly more power from deleting the cats than the resonators.
I can't agree, however, that the size of the tip on the garden hose has no effect on the total flow. Perhaps I misunderstood you...

P.S. my car has K&N FIPK, Lidio Tune, and 4.10 gears. The gears just got me into the 14s.

Take a 1/2" diameter garden hose and a 3/4" garden hose. Fill up 2 two gallon buckets, one hose each. Which bucket will fill up more quickly? With a nozzle at the same setting on each hose or no nozzle at all, the larger diameter hose will always push more water through in the same amount of time. Bigger is better.

Well, that's not entirely true either. Maximum flow will be determined by the smallest orifice in the system irrespective of placement. If the orifice will only flow "X" gpm, it doesn't matter how big a hose you have behind it.

OK - so take the nozzle out of the equation. Wide open hose. No restrictions. Is that better?

Yes, unless your hose is kinked like Motorhead350's...

Allow me to chime in here. I don't think you're going to get any significant horsepower Gains by installing resonator delete tips.
The 'resonator' as Ford calls it, is basically a piece of pipe welded in, 20-22" inside the 26" length of pipe. The main purpose of the pipe when it was installed, was to meet Fords NVH (noise, Vibration Harshness) requirements by reducing the length of reverberation in the 3.5" tips.. Much to most of our chagrins, when the cars were delivered, they had nice 3.5" polished tips, but sounded nothing like the cars on the DVD's we had all seen.
Deleting the cats is a whole 'nother can of worms, especially with OBD-2, seeing 'no cats' will cause the O2 sensors to go crazy, unless your tune has been adjusted for it (Lidio Turns off the rear O2s IIRC).
Replacing this with a Delete Style tip will give it a more authoritative exhaust note than stock, but I do not beleive any horsepower gains will be had.
The odd thing is, while all Panther Exhausts are made by ArvinMeritor, the Marauder exhaust was made by Faurecia, and claims to be one of the lowest restriction stock exhausts ford has ever put on a production car.

Thanks for the input, wchain, seems you know A LOT about our exhaust systems. I thought they were made by FORD
I will leave the resonators, and look for power elsewhere. I want more sound, but loath to spend green on no-power upgrades like exhaust tips.
