I just joined the 14 second club. Yeehaw!!!
14.84 @ 96.5 MPH (corrected).
These gears were the BEST mod I have done yet. WOW, THEY REALLY WAKE THE CAR UP. It's SO MUCH MORE FUN TO DRIVE. You don't have to down shift to pass on the highway anymore, it just moves out! No more annoying downshifts that rev the snot out of your engine (and alarm your passengers) when you want to ease by someone, but you need to do it today.
They are totally fine on the high way. Regular cruising speed of 80-90 is 2700-3000 RPM. It's kind of cool, because when you let off the throttle, you can now feel the car compression brake just a little
To be fair, the car did have an oil change from conventional with 3000 miles on it to new SYNTHETIC, an alignment that changed the tow-out of .25" to a toe-in of .10" (less drag), and SYNTHETIC rear end lube now (Amsoil). So, the entire .25 second improvement may NOT be all attributable to the gears...
The weirdest thing is that the gears didn't improve my 60ft times ONE IOTA. Still the same 2.64 seconds I got when the car was bone stock. Each mod I do I had to lower my launch RPM to get the same 2.64 60' time.
Trouble is, with the gears, I have to leave the hole at idle, and still annihilate the tires! That makes for inconsistent times, so I leave at 900, and try not to roll it on quickly, rather than just dropping the hammer like I used to be able to.:D
I LOVE DRIVING THIS CAR NOW. It's unbelievably fun...
The swap cost me $350 in labor, including axle bearing job and rebuild traction lock, so it wasn't too bad. Too bad he dropped my 3.55s and chipped one of the gears. I could have sold it on eBay for $45-$50. Not anymore...
At this point my car is seriously traction limited. I think this will be tough (read: expensive) to remedy.
Now I want to add underdrives, delete cats, delete EGR, change original spark plugs and wires (I bet they were never changed, I bought the car with 100K) jerry mod transmission and go to synthetic.
Who knows? Maybe I just may get to 14.50 ;)
