View Full Version : Funny Sound?

It all started when I recharged my A/C. All I did was spray a can of A/C Booster in with the car on, and with the Max A/C on like it says. Blew nice and cold and I was glad. Shut it off, went back inside and waited to go to work. I come outside and start her up, and, I can't even really describe the sound it makes, but it's loud and sounds like it grinds for a minute or something like that. I also noticed my tach dropped when the sound happens, but goes back to normal idle. And, call this wierd too but it sounds like the fan makes a different sound than before. What the hell happened?

Maybe you added too much R134 and the compressor is locking up?

Damn...I got home from work a little while ago, and when I started it up and sounded like a belt shredded, or the fan caught something.

if not the clutch assembly, the compressor could be locking up.
You gotta be careful about charging a/c without proper gauges. The high and low readings are very important. Just adding R134a without knowing the readings could compound existing problems.

How would I solve this? Could I bring it back to my dealer and let them fix it under warranty?

Well, it's at the dealer right now and will hopefully get it back tomorrow. Will let you know what happened.

You added too much and it shut the compressor down. Im dealing with our drivers being cute and pumping stuff into the A/C systems of our trucks to make it colder and then complaining that the A/C dont work and its making noise.
Usually venting out some of the extra will kick the compressor on and solve the problem.
Otherwise you dont have enough oil in the system and its seizing your clutch.

Damn, I hope it's not too late for them to fix it. Although, I wouldn't mind a new A/C pump.

*Update - Dealer called me back about an hour ago, A/C compressor is toast, getting a new one. Also said my tensioner pulley was bad and really loose, so that's getting replaced too. I only have to pay $50 for my deductable, $150+tax for the pulley and nothing for the A/C comp. luckily since he said it's about $450 new. Sweet, will have an even colder A/C when I get her back tomorrow.

Yep. It's a rip off, they consider that a wearable item LOL. I asked him, "How many tensioners do you repair daily?" "None." "I see...."

I'm guessing you don't have ESP Premiumcare ?? I know that would cover it.

I don't think so, if that is a Ford only warranty thing. This is an extended warranty through the GM dealer, so I'm not sure if it is different or not.

Got her back today and she's running better than ever. $966 was the total, and I only had to pay $215 of it :bows:. They found metal shavings in the orifice tube and replaced that as well. And yep, you guys were right I overfilled it by mistake since they said the high side was filled beyond max.

I hope they replaced the accumulator, and flushed the system.

Doesn't say, I know the mechanic who worked on my car though and I can call him to ask him.

That's still an expensive lesson to learn for shoving refrigerant in your car without using a gage (AC systems are very delicate!! More does not equal better!).
