A few weekends ago I made it down to the National Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, VA, right off Rt 95/Rt 1 in Dumfries/Quantico. I was actually surprised by the museum, it was a lot more than I had been expecting.

The exhibits were done very nicely. The detail in many of the scenes was impeccable. There was also some very interesting things in some of the displays, things that brought your other senses into the scenes depicted.

For instance, a display about the Fox Company a Toktong pass in the Korean war had a very nice theatrical display that you walked through, it brought you there by sight and sound, but not just that, the A/C was cranked very high in this room to help bring the sensation of cold that was present during this time.

I don't want to give too much of it away but I will post a few pictures of some of the exhibits, you'll see the great detail. Plus they had some cool planes and who doesn't like that. :)

All in all I think it was a great place, I was there about 4-5 hours and didn't see it all. They go from the very start of the Marines and you follow a timeline on the wall that's broken up by large exhibits for things such as WWII, Korea, etc. There's also a nice art gallery and War on Terror photo exhibit.

Highly recommended for a visit for CAM'ers, if interested it could make a nice CAM meet. When I went (On a Saturday), parking and admission were free. And at noonish when I arrived, parking was plentiful. Museum closes at 5pm.

I left some of the best stuff out, you gotta see it yourself, like the first flag raised on Mt. Suribachi

Only about 10 miles from my house, Mike. Open less than a year. The building design is intended to resemble/invoke the flag raising on Iwo Jima. Anyone who has made the trip up I-95 near Quantico MCB has seen this building over the past two years as it was being built. I-95 North heads straight for it and veers off to the left.

Been wanting to get down there for a visit and just haven't had the time this year. If we can put something together, that would be great.

CAM had a meet at the Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Center in July 2005. Was a good turn out, too. We met at the park at Sully Plantation off Route 28. After the tour of the A&S center we convoyed over to the Texas Roadhouse off the Fairfax County Parkway near Route 50. Now there's one right on Rte 28.

Your just in Fairfax. When are you gonna come out and meet the CAM gang?

Let me know when and where. I have a pretty hectic schedule and I'll be OCONUS for the next month or so, but I'd like to meet up. Also, if you all want some exterior pictures at the center I can arrange that.
