So, if I hadn't had that extra pancake in the morning... or that third glass of water... or if I didn't have my camera equipment in the car... or had a full tank of gas....

if... if... if... if....

... I might have actually broken into the 14s with my totally bone stock Marauder.

For now, I'll have to be content with a 15.096 @ 94.943 mph, at exactly 1:30 pm this afternoon. Almost 95 mph in this huge barge. Damn! That's haulin'! I hot lapped that car for hours, and 15.1x times came spitting out of the timing printer like it was a Xerox. Honestly, most of the time, there was no more than 3 minutes between my runs, it was that empty.

And the best part is that my best MPH of the day came on my first run: 95.503 mph. Doing a quick calculation based on the mph, I'm getting a result of 303-305 hp. I think all horsies are present and accounted for on this car!

Best 60' time was 2.320. Not great. I tried variations on launching... torquing up the converter while holding the brakes, nailing it out of the hole from idle, deep staging, shallow staging, you name it... the soft bottom end on stock Marauders is most evident at WOT from a complete stop, which is disappointing because in 99.9% of normal city stop-and-go situations, this lack of low end is not that apparent at all! It actually moves quite nicely. So, a little more bottom end oomph would most likely shave at least a tenth off that 60' time.

My technique:
(disclaimer: not saying this IS the best way to launch a Marauder on the track, it just happened to be how I got MY best run. Track conditions may vary, atmospheric conditions may vary, etc.etc.)
My best run came just after a short break in the hot lapping, where I let the car sit with the hood up for about 20 minutes. I left the OD on, A/C off, radio off, T/C off, punching it from idle, manually shifting to 2nd such that it shifted at about 5800 RPM, then putting it in 'D' after the 1-2 shift. A hint of wheelspin off the line, and a VERY cool BARK on the 1-2 shift...

The 1-2 bark from the rear happened on EVERY run. Way cool. I had a bunch of spectators come up and make a note of that consistent 1-2 upshift!

Most fun run of the day: beating a late model Mustang GT all done up with a monster tachometer + shift light, tons of racing stickers, etc. by 4 hundredths of a second. It was also on that run that I got my best reaction time: .682 (or .182 off a redlight). Other than that, the Marauder was tough to launch on time... it seemed to take forever to settle back on its rear suspension and GO! Traction was also occasionally a problem until I started heating up the BFGs a little before each run, then it was just a hint of hazing.

Overall, a very impressive machine. Mercury gets 4 thumbs up for the execution of this machine, and if the 2004s are going to be better, well that's just unbelievable for a sedan this size and this loaded. I'm at about 7300 miles, and with a little more break-in I'm sure I'll see 14s soon. (and still stock!)

WOW man those are great numbers for a bone stock marauder.. just loose some weight..(pancakes) ..get rid of the equipment and ur in the 14s! excellent. whats different on the 04s?

New transmission (more efficient), twin knock sensors (better timing control for more bottom end performance), etc... pretty much all the things I wished I had as I was pushing the accelerator to the mat as the lights came down.

With a little more break-in mileage in her, plus a chip, I should be seeing 14s by the fall. Traditionally, I always run my best times in the fall anyway... better air, I guess.

Forgot to mention... there is one point during each run where I distinctly noticed where I was losing *some* time (how much, I can't say). It's during the 2-3 upshift. Man that upshift is seriously lackluster.

I'm wondering if the WOT upshifts at redline are 'tainted' with some sort of torque management routine. The car really noticeably fell on its face during that sloppy 2-3 upshift. I even tried a run where I lifted off ever so slightly as I approached 5800 RPM in 2nd (with the lever in 'D') hoping to get an early upshift to 3rd. It did upshift, then I put my foot down again and immediately got a downshift to 2nd (and the engine raced to about 6000 RPM before upshifting to 3rd once again - a total waste of time). Strangely, that garbage run still resulted in a 15.4 second ET, but my MPH was down at 91. 4mph.

So if Dennis' improved shift points also address that crummy 2-3 shift, I'm sure there's a couple of hundredths to be had right there.

Glad you had a good time. Change over to the 4.10's and get the chip, etc. and you will be very happy! It does not take alot to turn this car around.http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/c0/rotlaugh.gif

I think I woulda saw a 15 flat too last night, had my damn foot not slipped off the brake and made me red light! Urgh... Ran at 94.73 MPH, but ended up with a 16 flat cause of the slip up. My best was a 15.213, I'll have to find my slips for the 60ft times. I wanted to try a run with manually shifting, but I ran out of time. I think it's almost necessary to get that 15 flat, cause that 1-2 shift just doesn't hit, and I agree with the 2-3 shift, it's just that awkward point in the run that you really don't need that gear for the distance left, but then again you do cause you're just going to wind out in 2nd. All in all though I was happy cause I talked to an SS guy who was bone stock and he was running a consistent 15.67, so that was cool. I think another key is letting the car cool down. I had about 5-6mins from my messed up run with the high MPH to my next, and in that time, the motor got a lil too hot I think. I was right on the line above C on my messed up run. I'm thinking about just popping in a 160 stat and get some Water Wetter or Royal Purple just for the hell of it. I was at 7400 miles at the time too.

Great result, LML! Looks like we're both knocking on the 14s. I've mentioned it before, in some other thread, how I'm not really a speed freak but prefer the feeling (and sound) of acceleration. Just the thought of how much pressure those tires are putting on the pavement to get a behemoth like this car moving at that speed that quickly... WOW is all I can say! And to think there's more to be had, with all the upgrade options available to us!

When I showed up at the track, I was hoping to be able to break out of the 16s... seeing as how it's a heavy car and I remember pulling 15.2 ETs with a rental Lincoln Mark VIII at Ennis, TX in 1995. So I pull off a 1st run: 15.47 @ 95.503 mph, with no trick other than OD, TC and A/C off. It didn't even have time for a cool-off from the 1hr. highway ride to the track! So the pressure was off and I was able to enjoy the rest of the hot-lapping.

At this rate I'll be at ~15000 miles by the next time I'm able to hit the track (Fall 2003) and by then I may have a chip installed. Looking forward to it!!!

Just looked at my slip and my best 60' time was 2.319 on the same run as my best ET. RT was .516.

Good times! Was that @ Napierville Dragway ?

We should meet up there later this fall once my car is ready. I went 3 times with the Vic and of cource I was the only Panther around.

Yes, Napierville Dragway. Zeke's Automotive had it's annual Drag Day there, but I think the crummy looking weather kept a lot of people away, hence why I had the chance to hot lap the car so much. In fact, I think I was one of the few if not the only one who was hot lapping. Some ricers showed up in the early afternoon, and I thought I'd run against them and show them what it's all about, but the track organizers shoo'ed them away! LOL! I think it's because the event was targeted mostly at Zekes' customers (mostly old muscle and F-bodies).

The air was good and they were actually spraying the track launch pad. They're usually pretty cheap with the VHT.

I'll probably try again sometime in the early Fall. That's when I've had my best times with any car I've taken there, and by then the MM will have broken in a bit more. But then my WS6 will have been freshened up as well, and I'll be gunning to beat my previous 13.4 @ 107.6 best.

I'll probably hit the Laval get-together this week, if the weather's good. I owe my wife a night off from taking care of the little one in return for yesterday's track fun. If the MM's shined up, I may take it up there instead of an F-body.

thanks
