I've got an almost-stock CV LX Sport with the factory open diff. I've been researching limited-slip units and would love to hear about which is your recommended unit.

Which is your pick for the quietest, most seamless and smooth, yet good and solid ('bullet-proof')? I do not race on a strip, but I certainly enjoy assertive driving, and I intend to s/c the vehicle within a year's time.

If you were in my shoes, what limited-slip would you go with, and why?

Thanks.

Well, you can go different ways here. You can get a Ford Trac-Loc and be done or upgrade to either an Auburn or Eaton unit. Id say go with the Eaton ECTED because it will give you the ability to go from LSD to Locker at the flip of a swithch

My stocker bit the dust ages ago. I went with an Auburn, and albeit has a bit of whine at 40 mph, it has worked well for me.

Whine is most likely not from the posi unit (nothing moves unless one wheel is spinning faster than the other), but from the gear pattern getting thrown off when you swapped from one carrier to the other. The carrier probably changed the backlash since it won't be mf'd to exactly the same tolerance as the OEM carrier.

It does look like the stock trac locks are not very aggressive units. The stock "wavy" S spring does not provide that much intial bite to the posi. With a lot of power I would be afraid of smoking the stock posi. There are probably a ton of aftermarket units available for the 8.8 since it's so common. I know Eatons are popular w/ the chevy rears I usually deal with (just a regular eaton limited slip, not a locker). They aren't cheap though.

Remember that you will need to check your backlash before removing the stock carrier, then when you reinstall the new posi carrier you will need to check the backlash, and if it has changed, get an aftermarket set of carrier shims and move the position of the carrier until the backlash is the same as it was originally.

I hope you are not planning on keeping the stock 3.27 gears. It would be a good time to do a gear upgrade since the new carrier may likely screw up the backlash and have to be re set up anyway.

I am probably going to go with 3.55.

I am probably going to go with 3.55.

Waste of time and money. You won't feel any difference. Go at least 4.10.

He's right, if 3.27 isn't enough gear (it's not), 3.55 isn't going to make a noticeable difference. If 4.10s are too much, I'd go w/ 3.73s.

There was a member on CVN that did LSD 3.73's with an intake/exhaust/tune and his car moves pretty good for an LXS. 3.73's won't be as harsh as 4.10's.

My brother put an Eaton posi & 3.55s in his 2000 CV and really likes them...the Eaton HOOKS up quick!

(watch out with 4.10s....remember the CV's 2 valve motor doesn't like to spin like the DOHC...especially if it isn't a 'PI' head engine.)

Yes, that's my concern. Thanks to all for your valuable comments.

Back to the point, though, what about specific recommendations for the LSD? I have read many good things about TrueTrac as well as the Zexel Torsen. What do you gurus think?

There it is, I would use that Eaton over the much easier-to-fry stock trac loc, if you can spend the $$. Otherwise a used stock unit will give you a posi, although not one that will last very long with a lot of power through it.

Thanks to all those who have chimed in.

I have read GREAT things about Truetrac and would really like to hear from those who have selected this unit as to their experience---quiet or not; clunky or smooth; what do you like or dislike about it?

Thanks again.

read up on the eaton man im tellin u ....u wont be disappointed and as of noise ur exhaust is gonna drown it out if theres any with the ford diff i had did a burn out and let go i went back and looked at it the right one was darker than the left one with the eaton it burn them even and longer meaning both wheels spin together and not one faster than the other plus if u add a supercharger u will have already beefed up ur rear end eatons and auburns are the way to go

There's GOT to be more folks who have a favorite LSD----and want to help guide a rookie with the right set-up, right?
