View Full Version : Trunk Popping Open

I have the weirdest problem with my Marauder - the trunk pops open when I move the gear shift lever out of Park! The trunk release button on the driver's door stopped working, too.
When you step on the brake and shift out of Park, the car normally locks the doors. Starting this morning (I drove the car two days ago with no problems), instead of locking the car doors, the trunk opens! I literally had to put the car in Neutral, close the trunk, and then shift into Drive to get to work this morning. After I got to work, I put the car into Park, and then shifted back out of Park and the truck opened again!
I'm thinking there must be a short in the wiring somewhere. Anyone else had a similar problem?

Nope.
I'd say in the door, where the door lock harness is nearest the trunk switch. Sorry, but I only have the Workshop manual or I'd look up a wiring diagram for you. (different manual)

I also think there is a broken wire in the drivers door.

cars are wired to do the wierdest things, my brother in law has a subaru, he installed a cd changer in the trunk and tapped the wrong wire. the changer worked great except when he pushes in the cigarette lighter the cooling fan in the engine compartment starts to run. pop the lighter out, the fan goes off.... crazy.

it could be the DDM (drivers door module) or possibly a chafed or pinched wire in the console near shifter.

I thought I would let everyone know what the problem was, just in case someone else ever has the same issue (although that's probably not likely!).
It turns out that one of the wires to the back up lights was either cut or frayed. Whenever the shift lever was in Reverse (even monentarily), the juice from the broken back up light wire went to the trunk release instead. I did not talk to the guy who actually worked on the car, so I'm not sure exactly where the broken wire was (in the door, in the shifter, or in the rear of the car).
It took them two and a half hours at the Ford dealer to find the problem, so it cost me more than $200 for them to replace a wire. At least it's fixed...

Sounds like alot, but it really isn't. Finding an intermittant short is very time consuming, and with access time to trace circiuts time adds up quickly. You should be glad they found it in one trip and in a relatively short time.
