Hi guys, does anyone in the MD/VA/DC area have an Xcal2 with a 4.10 NA tune they'd let me flash my car with (is this a no-no? Are tunes locked to one car?).

I don't want to buy an Xcal2 yet but I wanted to do a gear swap and not have to worry about shift points, etc.

If it is a no-no to share a tune, will someone at least let me use their Xcal2 to upload a new tune to my car (once) if I buy a tune directly from DR on the board?

I would certainly compensate for your time letting me use it. I'll drive over.

Thanks!

STeve

It will only work if your cache code is the same. For example, if yours is BMD0 you could use mine. ONLY if I returned my car back to stock, and let you use it, hence the VIN lock.

OK so I will buy a tune. I can still borrow someone else's Xcal2 to upload it to my PCM, right? (It won't be locked to the tuner, but to the car?)

I'm not 100% sure on that one since I haven't really fiddled with my Xcal2 all that much. I'm sure someone else can jump in and assist.

No, you get a new tuner also.

The tuner is locked to a specific VIN unless that VIN is returned to the stock tune. Once a specific VIN is retuned you can't use that tuner to load the tune on a different VIN.

I just picked up an SCT Xcal2 from a member here. When it came it didnt work on my car even though the original vehicle was reloaded with the stock tune.

If you buy a used Xcal 2 you must make sure it has reloaded the stock tune on the original car it was used on.

Then you must get live load and hook up the xcal2 to your usb port and in the main menu unlock the xcal from the previous user, then it will load a tune in your vehicle.

If you buy one new with a DR or Lidio tune it will work fine out of the box as long as your car was first, if not follow the above for used xcal2's..

After I reset my Xcal, it worked fantastic, the car is a different animal alltogether.. It came with 3 Lidio tunes and hats off to that man, they kick azz!!!:banana2:

i bought a used xcal2 w/ lidio tune in it 6 months ago from a member here..we had the same PCM code of BMDO..so he returned his vehicle to stock i purchased it from him and reprogrammed my PCM w/ lidios tune..nothing else is necessary..u must have the same PCM code for it to work:)

I've read both your threads...I see what you're trying to accomplish.:P
You can't use some aftermarket device, and no, you cannot use someone elses cal. That's how SCT stays in bussiness.;)

You may however get lucky, say at Seymour...IF...Jerry shows up...and MAYBE get a flash for cheap. :dunno:

My first flash only ran me $150 from...someone...;)...but over time it was better for ME to get a 4-position SCT chip. It gave memore options than a handheld tuner with all the different scenarios I deal with.

A tuner is easy to send out for changes. With my chip, I need face time to make changes. AND a dyno. I lost the taste for generic cal tunes long ago.
They work fine, but to get things really precise, a dyno, face time, and a chip really satisfies.

According to the XCal2 literature, once used on a car the tuner is locked to that VIN, even after the car is returned to stock. The XCal must be reset by the dealer to use it on a different car.

gmtech's experience seems to have been different though.

Thats not true, although the documentation reads that way, you simply have to return the original car its used on to stock, then go into the xcal2 with live load and then hit the button on the lower right in the software to allow it to lock another vin. You must make sure the guy you got it from returned his to stock, the tune is what you need and that the xcal2 has the proper pcm code for your car. Mine is MAV2 so it was a clean transition once I figured out how to reset it.

Maybe a tuner can lock out the device, but in this case it worked with the readily available software from sct..

Richy04 has described the procedure most accurately. The only thing he left out is that, when resetting the VIN under the Live Load program, you "lose" one of the Xcal2's 5 lives. After 5 resets, that's it. You have to return it to SCT to have it reset to its five lives again - for a fee, of course.

Ah engineers at work.
I can see why they suggest sending the XCal back to the dealer for reset.

Good info about being able to reset yourself with Live Load, I guess they wanted to keep the literature simple. The tuner really doesn't come with much of a user guide.

send me your email and I will send you a more extensive manual in pdf.. You can get it from their user forum as well..

i didnt have to use live load to unlock anything:confused:..just plug in and download tune...have done it about 10 times so far just playing w/ the user adjustable features when i was at the track..

No I told you that, it the Xcall can only do one car, then it is Vin locked to that car unless you return the car back to stock.

There's a 9100 for sale in the classified's for $100 with a 4.10 tune already loaded. It even has a programming cable to put new tunes in. I use SCT extreme tune to modify the shift points, tire sizes, idle speed etc. It's not as nice as the XCT but it works and the price is right.

I don't see a 9100 for sale at that price. I see one for $200.

Is SCT Extreme an extra cost? How much does it cost? Is the 9100 as capable as the newer unit, just less easy to use?

Most tuner unit are VIN locked to one car no matter how many tunes you have. The SNIPER tuner can program two cars right out of the box and you could purchase extra bullet to do additional car with the same tuner. The beauty of the Sniper unit is that it can hold up to six tunes and there's no limit in how many tunes you want to creat with its program. There's also no X number of lives.
