I have had to replace my driver's seat back FOUR times now...luckily ALL under warranty!!!

I was behind the car today with the sun shining in the back window and it looks as if the top of the back seat is burned?? (see photo...bad shot but I'll get another in the AM). It is brown and looks to be permanent!!!:shake:

The material is vinyl since only the seat surface is "Leather" (or something similar).....so I may be able to dye (paint) it if I can find the right color??

Anyone else have this happening to theirs??

Is she kept in a garage MJ?
That's the usual for a sun worshipping car....

The picture makes it look more like a stain of some kind.

I drive my girl daily in the warm, cali weather. The very 1st thing I did when I got her was to get the windows tinted.

I also use a UV protector on the dash and the same area as our friend discovered "fried". Seems to be working 65k and the insides still look new.

Now if I can get the:censor::censor::censor::ce nsor: to stop "bumping" scratching, etc the outside, I will be a happy man. The outsides are getting so bad that my car is now a 50 footer.

Rich,

The car stays outside but the seats should last longer than three and a half years!!!:argue: I'm going to see if the dealer can get something done for me under warranty??

Dude,

Do you live near the entrance of Hell? :flamer:

I've seen that happen on cars from the desert region but not from the south.. Holy Cow.. Fear not though, there are a few companies that sell vinyl paint that will fix that and most auto paint suppliers can mix up some in a jiff all in the right color...

Sure looks that way to me. Either water is getting in through the window seals (or heavy condensation) or someone spilled a drink back there during the installation process and didn't get it all wiped up. My car sits in the sun all day every day and I have nothing that looks like that. :(

Based on the color of the stain, my bet is on a sugary drink. That is about the right color for sugar residue after cooking in the hot sun. :dunno:

...

Lately it seems like the center of Hell with temps every day of 100+!!!:mad2:

The stain is actually a burned looking place like you used to see on dash boards in 10-15 year old cars...the vinyl is cooked from the sun!!:shake:

I will see if painting (dyeing) it is an option if the dealer won't help me??

Stay tuned!!

I don't know how good looking or long lasting dying melted vinyl is going to be -- definitely bug the dealer first.

i have been an upholsterer for 2 years and the shop i work at has the originall owner still there, 80 years old. looks like you got some faulty vinal, however that should have been picked up from when it was first roilled out. Burned?? vinal doesnt burn, it melts. my best sloution, go to your nearest upholstery shop and get leather to replace that vinal part. problem would be if you had to order the leather... you must buy a whole hide, cant buy just the amount you need... it can be pricey.

also try silicone spray, or availible at your nearest upholstery shop, some heavy duty vinal cleaners. just be careful, read the back of the can... if it doesnt say that it is body shop safe, DONT BUY IT!

good luck!

I went to CarQuest and got the paint mixed for "Light Flint" and though it will be involved I will give it a try ASAP!!

It is a PPG acrylic enamel designed for vinyl and leather.....amazingly it matches very well!!:bows:

Since it is high and not too visible it will not be that critical and all I need to do is remove the seat back and shoot it??

Stay tuned!!

Looks real good. I still don't see how the sun could be scorching the back of the seats unless your rear window is acting as a magnifying glass. Maybe you have found the exact parking angle that makes this occur after long exposure to the sun. I'd try adjusting my parking location even if only slightly to reduce the possibility of this problem recurring. Or try using a rear window shade when its just sitting in the sun.

It looked to me like something bled through from behind staining the vinyl?? It was still soft but it looked rusty??

The paint is a PITA in that you have to reduce it properly then add hardener....spray and hope it tacks before a bug gets in it!!:argue:

It cures to max toughness overnight!!

Since it is where it is and really not visible I will let it be for now.....If it does it again my friendly parts guy will get me a new skin!!

Mine is black in the New Orleans area hot sun. I tinted to protect the interior and reduce temps.

The pattern does not look like a drink spill.

Could it have been something from back seat passengers such as a hair styling product like Jeri Curl?

I always keep a towel and paper towels in the car. In my youth a very attractive young lady was riding her bike down St. Charles Ave in her nurses uniform when she was drenched by a summer shower. She was causing quite a traffic jam. Being a gentleman I stopped a block in front of her and handed her my towel.

She dried off and handed me back the towel. I refused it and told her that she needed it to cover up because she was causing a traffic jam. She tried to reject it professing she did not want to take my towel. I responded you are only borrowing it and handed her my card.

She called me returned the towel and I took her to dinner.:D

Moral of the story...when it rains, jump in your car with a towel and business card and look for chicks on bikes.

What does this have to do with the stain on his seat? Who cares, you picked up a chick and all you needed was a towel and a business card. Hell, I am starting to carry both 24/7 just in case.

Wow looks good as new, every thought about getting the rear windows tinted to help cut down the UV rays that like to burn stuff? lol

Do you park anywhere where light is concentrated in the back window during the day? Building windows, etc? Park your car where you always do, home, work etc. and check throughout the day.

I've heard of crystal balls hanging from a mirror burn dash parts like a magnifying glass.

Nobody has ever ridden in the back seat except my next door neighbors ONCE about 3 years ago....soooo I don't think any spray has gotten on it?? I do wipe it with Meguiar's leather stuff!! You don't suppose that's the culprit do you??

My car gets the AM sun in the back window in my driveway!!

It must be a defect.

I am glad u were able to fix it.
