I went to Wal-Mart to get some Mercon V and NADA.....all they had was their brand of "All Vehicle" fluid that said it is formulated to replace all Dexron, Mercon V, and Mopar fluids??:argue: Then I went to AutoZone and they had Castrol Mercon V and another "Universal" fluid??
Yesterday I went back to Wal-Mart and found that Castrol has "Consolidated" their fluid for use in all vehicles......What the heck is going on here??:mad2:
Have any of you used the "One-Product-Fits-All" fluid yet??
Now I wonder what to do?? Go to Ford and buy from them I guess??

jack, Castrol's web site still lists a specific Mercon V product...
Now that Ford has stopped issuing licenses for Mercon, no one is allowed to call their product that anymore. Same thing with Dexron III over at the Bow-Tie ranch, now that they've come out with Dexron VI. Most of the major players now call their old DexIII/Mercon product "Domestic Multi-Vehicle Formula" or something like that. It's the same old fluid with a new generic name. DON'T use it in your transmission, although it is still fine for the P/S. Also, DON'T use anything that claims to be a "universal" fluid that can be used in all cars. It's not and it can't.
I buy my Motorcraft Mercon V by the case from the local dealer. Still costs a little more than buying Castrol at Wally World, but it ain't THAT much more...

I am curious especially since Castrol has stepped with the "Universal" stuff??Where are you getting the word "universal"? Castrol doesn't list anything like that on their web site, nor do they offer a fluid that claim to be such...
They do list:
Dexron VI
Domestic Multi-vehicle (ex DexIII/Mercon)
Import Multi-vehicle
Mercon V
AFT+4
Type F

I dubbed it "universal" as it is supposed to replace everything except Type-F??
I am not a fan of "One Size Fits All" and would never use it as it has to be a compromise and Mercon V is all I have ever used......I was merely inquiring and "universal" is a term that seemed to fit......sorry??

I called Dave at Redline Oil, which makes Redline D4 Trans Fluid, which is rated for Mercon V, when a trans fluid is rated for Mercon V or Dextron IV, the trans fluid has to meet that spec, it basically has to pass a test for wear, oxidation, flash point, etc. A universal trans fluid like Amsoil trans orRedline D4 is really not that different than Ford Motorcraft Mercon V, it is just a full synthetic. I believe back in the 1970's there was mercon and dextron II or III, people kept mixing them up, putting in the wrong stuff, they then came out with trans fluid that was Dextron- Mercon, even though you could go to a ford dealer and just buy mercon fluid or go to chevrolet and get dextron fluid, remember Mercon V is really not a fluid but a spec that the fluid has to meet, if you dont believe me call Redline or Amsoil up, I would say that whatever fluid you use you probably should flush the old fluid out, whatever fluid you decide to use go to there website to see if you can find out what the flash point and pour point is as well as the viscosity index, if they dont list these then dont buy it.
