View Full Version : AC Compressor Total Failure

I have been noticing that my air was taking some time to get cold. Last night I stopped to pick up some lotto tickets, got back in the car, no ac at all and blowing hot air. Great:mad:. Got home 2 miles later and could smell a heavy burnt clutch odor. Took the car over to L/M dealership where Claude (CarFixer) works this morning and sure enough the compressor is toast. Burned to crisp, metal particles throughout the system, ac pulley gone.
I have an 8 rib system and we are trying to locate another ac pulley, which I believe is off an F-150 truck. Compressor and additional parts need to be totally replaced:depress:. Claude is bending over backwards to help me out and get my car squared away. He said this the first Marauder he knows of that had this type of AC failure. He thinks because the motor has been out a couple of times that each time some oil from the ac compressor is loss and may have been the reason that caused the failure. Something you guys should be aware of if you pull your motor. As always, Claude is the man and always goes out of his way to help me out.
PS: Didn't win the lotto either:shake:

I'm sure they know they have to flush out the lines and components. Dealers should have equipment to to this from FORD. If they don't it will cause problems.

Yes I was advised that it would be done as well as some additional parts had to be replaced. Carfixer is right on top of it all.

I believe the AC pulley on my 8-rib setup came from an E-150.
And my compressor was also replaced, it was under warranty at about 95k miles.

Zack that number acccording to Ford is an idler pulley. Any ideas? I know it is a 4" diameter eight rib. We though it was from an E-150 but no go. ANY help is appreciated. Give me a call on my cell so I can give you Claudes cell number. My cell 239-281-5181. Thanks.

We are having trouble locating the AC pulley part number. Can you get it?

Naive, maybe...
Seems like it would need to be from a larger vehicle with dual air such as:
Navigator
Expedition
E250/350
Excursion
Just trying to help brainstorm...

They have tried to match up to several vehicles. Brian (Fordnut) has the part number on an invoice he has and is looking it up for me.

It may be wise that after a total compressor failure that you also change the evaporator. Sometimes the broken metal parts make their way into the system and collect in the evaporator.

That is already on the parts replacement list.

The FORD flush machine should elimate the need to replace evap. Granted if it were my car I would want it replaced.

The evaporator should be changed anytime the system is opened.

Don't you mean the accumulator ??
The evaporator should be changed anytime the system is opened.

Tom, Sorry for the failure but you couldn't be in better hands, both Claude's and the guys here. Good luck. Dennis

There is no need for a new evaporator or condenser unless they are leaking (Tom's is not leaking). We are replacing the compressor, clutch, accumulator, orifice tube and performing a complete flush. We will then put the correct amount of compressor oil in the system and recharge with the correct amount of R134a.
I have Bryan doing the work. He has been a L/M tech for 21 years at Scanlon L/M and may have fixed more Lincoln Mercury A/C systems than almost any tech in the nation.

Well one of the top mechanics at Scanlon L/M (Bryan) told me my AC compressor went catastrophic! Metal particles EVERYWHERE. Flushed the entire system twice, replaced the compressor, accumulator and other components. Well she was cold for a while (actually frigid), but metal must have gotten into the condensor. Because a mile down the road the ac went hot and I could hear the the compressor releaving pressure from more metal particles in the system. Claude (Carfixer) advised it will have to come back and get a new condensor and get flushed again. I am off to Texas tomorrow for the week and will bring the car back upon my return.
One thing about Claude, he will take care of our Marauders. :bows:Hats off to the man for his dedication and sincere concern to make things right. Six Marauders today at his dealership for some maintainence and stopping by. A Florida mini-meet:up:. We must have set a record in Florida and beyond today. Chuck, Kenny, Eric, Claudes, mine and another (that I missed).
Will keep everyone posted. I hate when my Marauder is sick:mad:. No AC in Florida is really bad.:bigcry: Thank God we had a thunderstorm come through which cooled things down. Felt good having the windows down and hearing the pipes.

Let us know what the post morteum is. As our Marauders mature the data on their geriatric treatment is valuable.

Will do Billy. I'll tell ya, replacing an AC system is not cheap:eek:. If it hapopen 3K ago it would have been covered under the warranty. My luck.

Looks like metal particles got into the condensor. Went done the road from the dealership and could hear the compressor relief valve popping. Claude verified it. Car goes back in the shop next Monday for replacement of the condensor and God knows what else. Very expensive:eek:, but can't live without it in Florida.
