Is it ok to turn the overdrive off while the car is in drive?
for example: I was 70 mph on the highway and this guy was testing me, ( he was driving 06 SS Impala), but i thought about it - Its not cool to go WOT with the overdrive on. Thats how i broke the first transmission. So i ask. Is it cool to turn the overdrive off going 70mph?

I guess youre not supposed to shift into OD under WOT, But I drive with overdrive on even when I drive the car harder because of the cruising in between stopping and going. Ive hit it at highway speeds, with overdrive on, car downshifts and puts you into the seat real nice, never any problems.

You mean off? I thought o/d off was for all out power and o/d on was fuel savingness

Sorry I meant cruising with the overdrive on (in 4th gear), hitting the gas makes my car downshift and get to haulin.

I didn't use to downshift when flooring the gast pedal until I blew my transmission. The great majority of times of not downshifting, it worked. However my upgraded transmission was obviously not strong enough and failed immediately.
I would like to hear from those who have bullet-proof transmissions if they downshift or not.

Whenever I drop the hammer, around town or highway, I click OD off, let the car shift down, and hit it. People say if you going to "test" your car, take OD off so you don't burn up the bands. Woah, John F. Russo I just noticed you live in MA too? Your car sounds wicked! I'd love to see it in person someday.

You don't want to shift into 4th gear at WOT. It depends what axle ratio you are running, of course, but if you go to WOT at 70 MPH, your transmission will kickdown probably to 3rd gear. That shift should be fine to do at WOT.
If you keep your foot in it until the shift schedule says to make the 3-4 upshift, that is what you don't want to do at WOT.
Remember, clicking the O/D Cancel button at 70 mph will command an immediate 4-3 "manual" shift. You will go to 3rd gear rather quickly, and there will be engine braking in the 3M position. Personally, I would not want to make the manual 4-3 shift with my foot buried in the accelerator pedal!

I think these guys are clicking OD off with their foot light on the gas, then hammering it. It seems really silly that with 2003 technology we have to do this (thanks Ford!), but that's what people are telling me.

Given transmission failures from all manufacturers, Ford is hardly alone in this.

If I'm getting on it, I push the accelerator down as far as it'll go until it's time to slow down at which point simply reverse the steps.
Nearing on 130k on the stock trans, never been out...knock on wood.

When cruising in OD, shift OD OFF...wait for it to downshift, THEN hammer it

I was recently cruising at 93 in a 65. I came up on, and passed a Local Cruiser. I figured WTH, he's already got me, so I just kept on going, and passed him. I was in the Left lane, and he was in the Center.
He didn't even make a peep :D
I guess it helps, though, when 3 members of SWAT drive black MM's w/ tint :D
