View Full Version : Use them or sell them?

As some of you know from an earlier post I now have two BF Goodrich Drag Radials, but they are 26 inches and not 28. I'm really working hard to get my money back since I bought these off the street, but I'm also thinking maybe I should give them a try. I think with the tires being 2 inches shorter than the factory rears this may cause problems for shifting too late and maybe other issues because the car is tuned to have 28 inch rears. I would like to use these tires to drive to the track with and back. I'm still going to use the stock tires for normal street use. Any thoughts on giving them a try or selling these?

With shorter tires your tranny will shift earlier, it would be like having a numerically higher rear gear. You probably will have a hard time off the line, lots of wheel spin I bet.

Be careful driving home on drag radials. A friend of mine totaled his car on the street doing just that.

Try Them First
If I try them I cannot return them. So it's not like I can try them first... it's keep em or loose em basically, but everyone seems to think their alright so far.

If I try them I cannot return them.
Then, instead of attempting to sell them, return them and get your money back.

I just picked up JoeWalsh's used set of 255/50-16 BFG drag radials mounted and they have been working fine with his 12.99 1/4 mile runs. I'm just glad I have an Xcal2 so I can adjust my shift points.
If you end up keeping them get someone to go with you and change the tires at the track. If your not 100% sure about them then just return them and get something that you will be comfortable with.

Don't try them. It's a fact the shorter size will cause issues, namely bouncing off the rev limiter with your current tune.
I'm sorry Dom...but chalk this up as yet another less than intelligent purchase.:o

I never had a problem with wrong rpm shifts/bouncing off the rev limiter when I bolted on the 26" tall P255 BFG DRs...
It would throw the ABS light, but the shifts were always right at 6100 rpm. I did not get the car re-tuned for the DRs. I would just bolt them on and drive the 12 miles to the track.

FWIW, I did bounce off the limiter both 1-2 and slightly on 2-3 when I ran a 12.99 last year. At pinks this year I had a good solid run and DIDN'T hit the limiter - unfortunately I didn't get a slip for that run due to the rules, it was probably much better than 12.9.
Also, I turn off the T/C on my 300B car (obviously), but have never thrown an ABS light with them!
(I have the same size MT's on the same rims I got from Joe's friend.)
I'm sure this just adds confusion to the mix, but thought I'd share my experience with that size.
It does give you more gear too, for me with 4.10's it gives a 4.51 effective rear gear. A quick an easy way to reprogram with an Xcal is to have a 4.56 tune on there from your tuner and just use that. (I've not done that yet - and 4.56 on a s/c'ed car is quite short for 1/4mi - the effective 4.51 hasn't caused any issues for me but I suspect if I had more boost and hence faster trap speed I may have issues with OD off.)
All that being said, with 4.10s I'd rather have 28" tall. I'd probably feel more strongly about that if I had a TC too.
That being said there are no DR's for 16" rims or our stock 18's (non widened) that are 28" tall. There are bias ply MT ET streets for 16" but you need to be aware of the differences they will give and the squirrely nature of the car - yes I know this has been said but now it's in here for future searches. :)
Just my thoughts from what I saw, YMMV.

BTW, when you ran, did you run OD-off?

Of course I did. ;)
