View Full Version : Can't pinpoint what's causing this

I posted back, some of you probably remember, I had my A/C condensor replaced since I over filled it and killed it. But whenever I would start the car up, it would make like a grinding noise, only with the A/C on though, but I still really can't describe the sound. It would only do it on a cold start though. Well, now that sound is back again, and this time it does it without the A/C on. I noticed it did it today while I was driving too and was getting worried on what it was. What should I look into? I plan on bringing it back to the dealer and telling them to fix anything with the car before I put the Procharger on. Also too, I noticed today when I stomp on it, it feels like the car is being held back? Like it doesn't feel as if all the power is there? I have no clue as to what is causing this, and what would have caused this to become an issue. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I am noticeing the same when I have the A/C on and have to hit the kickdown gear to avoid an azzhat...I have JUST NOW narrowed it down to my A/C Clutch...may need to replace it...

Just a suggestion for continuied analysis...:D

They also replaced my tensioner pulley when I was there too. Maybe I will have them check my A/C clutch. But why would it do it when the A/C isn't on? I thought that only spins when the A/C is engaged?

Thats a good question I dont have the answer for since the AC clutch is electrically engaged and disengaged...I should go for a run and see if it happens without AC on...My guess is that if it does, its an actual mechanical problem with the clutch and will eventually fail...back inna few after I see what happens...

Okay...my results :

A/C on, Overdrive on : Squeal @ kickdown/WOT
A/C off, OD off : No squeal/noise

Soo...checked tensioner pulley and belt after this run...all is good with these items...

So now I am confused and prolly did the same to you...all I can think of is with the VorTech S/C, at kickdown....the belt slips...

The a/c clutch assy is basically the same as the tensioner pulley when the a/c is not engaged. It still has some kind of bearing in it, which could possibly fail. The clutch part engages this pulley to the a/c compressor.
Also, check your alternator or anything the spins with the belt.

^^^what omarauder said^^^

The A/C compressor clutch in my previous company truck would make strange noises when disengaged, but be OK when engaged.

Was your defroster on, or was the EATC completely off?

If you're having the tensioner replaced - might as well change the idler pulley as well. It's cheap.

Derek I do believe my defroster was on when it made a noise as well. The tensioner pulley was already replaced when I had the new A/C condenser put in. The noise has seemed to have gone away....for now. I am still going to take it to the dealer though.
