FOR 28 SPLINE AXLES ONLY
Just wanted to pass this along to anyone who is on the fence about 4.10 gears because of price or whatever. I am no way trying to promote this company on ebay or take any business away from our vendors, but when we all find something for a good price we usually share it so that's what I'm doing.
For $220 (including shipping if you get it at the starting bid like I did) getting the master install kit, 4.10 gears and axle bearing kit to me was a good deal. I've used Motive gears before and know many people who use them now, no complaints besides figuring out what go fast mod to do next lol.

If you notice it does not say what brand, so is it a good deal

They are Motive gears.
Motive is listed in the ad.

Ford Motor Sport? And do the gears on Summit include the master install kit and axle bearings kit? Find out how much those are also then compare the pricing.
I saw Ford Racing ones listed for $220. The ebay product I bought had the master install kit and axle bearings kit included with the 4.10 gears for 28 spline axles. Motive 4.10 gears go for $180 on Summit.

Barry am I missing something? http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?Ntt=ford+racing+ gears&N=700+4294918962+115+429478041 0&Ntk=KeywordSearch
I don't see $160.

I am basing my post on my experience. I paid $160 for gears, and $300 for installation, which included all the extra 'whatevers'.
I am not able to do this install myself, therefore paying more for "kits" is useless to me.
I concede... as I have no idea what I am talking about, and really should not have posted here.;)
Sorry for the hijack, proceed.

I don't think it matters what spline axles you have. Should work with either 28 or 31 splined axles.

I think it matters in that Ebay ad since it comes with an install kit that includes axle bearings, otherwise ring and pinion wise 8.8 and brand should be all the matters.

The axle bearings are the same 31/28 spline. It's the carrier bearings that are larger (ID) with the 31 spline setup. That kit has both axle and carrier bearings and would be specific for 28 splines (according to the seller). If you were ordering a new master kit from a supplier you would need to specify 31 or 28 spline, the carriers and their bearings do not interchange based on splines, but they will fit in any 8.8 housing making it easy to convert from 28 to 31...

So for a stock 03 MM what would be the way to go as far as ordering brand specific gears? Also, what is the easiest way to find out spline count without actually having to crack open the rear and count?
My other half is either full throttle or full brake so I have been thinking about having this upgrade done to his car as a gift.
Thanks:help:

Many of us have the Ford Racing 4.10s, usually purchased from one of the vendors here. These are also called FRPP (Ford Racing Performance Products) or FMS (Ford MotorSports) gears.
If you got the car new, it has 28-spline axles. If you bought it used, then the previous owner may have changed to 31-spline axles, but as others said above, it requires replacing the carrier as well and there's no compelling reason to do it unless you have significantly more power than stock, so I would think that unlikely. If doesn't matter which axles you have, the gears are the same; only the bearings are different, and they're inexpensive.
Remember, too, that you can't replace the gears without getting a tune, as the speedo will be off and the shift points way too low.

Not all FMS gears are created equal!
DO NOT GET THE ONES WHO P/N ENDS IN 410M. THEY ARE MOTIVE GEARS, and unless your mechanic is VERY, VERY skillful, and experienced setting MOTIVE gears up, you are VERY LIKELY to end up with GEAR NOISE!
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Stick to the 410A gears. These are the ones made by FORD. I had these installed ZERO issues, even quieter than before!

What is a spline count, and what do we use normally.
Would changing axles change this number?
