This hasn't been asked in a while TMK.

My radio died this AM - all I get is a bit 'o sub and no other sound. The same with CDs.

So, either the speaker connections have all come off the back of the head unit or the unit is fried. I'm guessing the latter, but who knows until I can get back to my tools.

I'll ask in advance in case it's the latter. Anyone ever find a good replacement for the OEM head unit that doesn't look like a neon spaceship? I know I am going to have to order something since Best Buy will not have anything but pimp ****zle dizzle, yo.

Anyone replaced theirs with a good unit that matches the dash/interior?

I'm trying to decide if this is the time I upgrade to the GPS/touchscreen/satellite radio/mp3 player.

Thanks

Of all the unit's I've put in Marauders, none looks more at home than the Avic D3. The keys can be set to color match the interior and the fit is absolutely perfect. It has plenty of power. You WILL need to replace the sub assembly.

Contact John for pricing, but I do believe that you can get into a D3 for little more than the dealer would charge for a stock replacement.

Try John Kuhn, he is the resident sound expert, also a vendor.

Thanks for the thread reference. That setup looks really nice. However, after looking up some prices this AM, it looks like I'd be into that setup for at least $1500 and I'm not looking to spend that much. At least not right now.

Is there a replacement unit alone that will do the job and look decent?

Not to sound like a broken record... but call John.

Replacing the Head Unit, and Sub, if done yourself..... should be at least 1/3 less ;)

OK, this has now become a troubleshooting thread.

Yesterday on my way to work, I got the above symptoms -- no sound except for muffled sub. It happened on any station AM or FM, or CD. Turned the unit off and on several times, sometimes waiting a couple minutes, sometimes quickly.

Get in the car last night on the way home, everything works as if nothing had ever been wrong. Same thing this morning.

I'd pull the unit but I'm afraid I'll find ferrets or something. WTF could be causing this?

I'm not saying I'm not going to replace the unit anyway, but this one doesn't make any sense. If something had become disconnected, it magically reconnected itself sometime during the day yesterday.

My car is parked right outside my office and is locked, so I really doubt it's someone just messing with me.

Anyone have a clue as to how this could happen?

I would say most likely it is ferrets.

power supply for the internal amp is going.

I thought about that, but I've never seen a power supply do that. usually when something is intermittent I've found it to be a switch or other connection problem.

Not saying you're wrong, just thinking in print.

The 'switch' in question is likely a silicone transistor that has overheated and cracked (common) and has intermittent connection due to heat expansion or vibration.

I never actually turned my radio on in my Marauder - picked it up from the dealer and drove it straight over to Car Tunes. It was a little nerve racking coming back the next day and seeing interior pieces of the car laying all over the shop :) The heart of the system I selected is a Alpine IVA-D900 DVD/CD/MP3 Receiver/Mobile Multi Media Station that I just can't praise enough.

They installed Alpine equipment throughout and ended up having to build a custom fiberglass insert so the DVD screen would clear the dash when it popped up.

Anyway - one of the best $4K I ever spent - sounds awesome and its great for watching action movies. Of course I have no idea how the stock system sounded LOL - maybe someday I'll put it all back to stock.

Yep. Already on it. :)

Strangely, my wife's CD player is now no longer reading discs so I am taking hers to get an MP3/disc player put in. It'll give me a chance to ask the guys what they can do for mine in what price range.
