Ummm....thanks for the input, but I never received this. How did you send it?
Also, as listed in the very first post of this thread, we started this whole project for Canadian-owned Marauders. I think that if I had tried to do a calendar for any MM owners world-wide to participate in, I'd STILL be sorting through all the pictures!:bigcry:
That said, I guess I'll have to start thinking about it for next year....either that or.....MAKE A DECK OF PLAYING CARDS WITH MM PICS ON THE BACK!
(Oh no, what have I started?!?!)

Evening Everyone,
GOOD NEWS: the first "test copy" calendar will be in Derek's hands by tomorrow, so we'll bring it to the MM meet in Washington state on Saturday for everyone to see.
BAD NEWS: the cheapest postage rate I can find is $9.65 through Canada Post!!!!! WTH?????:mad2:
I had no idea that an 8.5 x 11 calendar would cost that much to ship, and I'm pretty pissed right now! Here's the link where I found the info:
http://www.canadapost.ca/business/tools/rc/res/bin/rc_res-e.asp
As I've said from DAY ONE, nobody is making a penny from this. Derek is getting us the $29.99 high res version calendar for $16.95, and he's also getting the envelopes at cost. I had thought it would be $3-$4 at maximum to ship these friggin things.
I will ask Derek to go by a Post Office to actually check what the price is in person, and I guess we'll go from there.
That said, I completely understand if ANYONE wants to cancel their order due to the higher cost, should the actual shipping rates be the nearly $10 price I get from the web link. Here's the cost breakdown again:
High res calendar--- 16.95 + taxes (7% PST and 6% GST) (yes, these must be paid)
= $19.15
Shipping the damn thing = $9.65
Envelope = .25 (estimated)
Total = $29.05
Guys, this screw-up is completely my fault for not having checked out details before now, but I truely had no idea shipping would be anything more than a few dollars. Apparently, the price is due to the size, not the weight.
Please hold back posting all the brutal replies until I post again, and give the confirmed, actual shipping charge. Then you can cancel if you want to.
To say that after all the effort put into this by myself, Derek, Sully008 and all other participants, that things have taken such a STUPID turn is an understatement. Again, I must take full responsibility for this. I'll take the heat for dropping the ball, but it was an honest mistake, and not one made to "bait-and-switch for profit/sales" as there IS no profit of any kind being made. I'm just trying to bring the community something I thought would be a good idea, and I screwed up. :(
Sorry.

I wouldn't be so hard on yourself Ian.....the postage amount doesn't surprise me at all given the diameter of the calendar and the fact that it's Canada Post (apologies to all Posties). Perhaps a courier company may be cheaper?

Calendar guys,
There is absolutly no problem with those shipping charge as they are related to size more than anything. Try to update those with when a few (like my 3 order) are shipped. I still want my calendars !! Maybe bring 1 to 5 in a postal office, let them measure it and confirm shipping from a 1 to 5 hypothesis.
I know it could be decieving (about shipping) but anyone who has modded his car and ordered a few parts know that the shipping business had gone way past the shylock business !! :(
Last spring, I went to Florida to pick up 3 part and it was actually cheaper to get in a plane, have a week holiday in sunny Florida and bring them back, this including meals, hotel and outgoing fees with a rented car. UPS is that costly for canadians and that's no BS.
I only went once in BC, would be glad to go back but your fee mean that I still won't have to go this season . So It,s not that bad !!!. :)
Congratulations for this and keep on the good work !
PS: Please keep us informed about that deck of cards prototype !

Yippee! Yippee! Yippee!
I went to Canada Post today...calendar shipping within Canada is priced at $1.86, and to the USA at $3.10. Those with more than one calendar ordered will be a bit more of course, due to weight. Luckily, these calendars JUST fit into the regular mail charges column, not the oversized column.
So, the prices for shipping the calendars are back in line with the original estimate, and all we need to do is add the price of the box of large envelopes.
Let's say the final shipping cost for a single calendar in Canada will be $2.00, and shipping a single calendar to the USA will be $3.25
Once I mail the calendars off, I'll post the amount each person owes here in this thread. Canadians can send me personal cheques, and Americans MIGHT have to send certified cheques (money orders) if my bank charges me to convert and cash an American personal cheque. I'll find out ASAP, and let you know.
It's so nice to be able to breathe again!:D
P.S.--- I'll assume that the current order list stands as is, unless you post here in this thread and tell me you want to cancel your order. Also, Sunday at noon PST will be the official closure for accepting orders or cancellations. Monday morning we go to print!

Ummm...so how about some feedback on them? I'm really hoping everybody likes them as much as we do. For a first time project done by two rookies (and a great Photoshop editor in Sully008), I'm really pleased in how they turned out.
Of course there is always room for improvements and such. This is an open invitation for everyone who ordered and received to POST US SOME FEEDBACK! Please keep in mind Derek is a new-age, sensitive type guy, so don't go making him cry!:P
I'm out of town for a bit, with limited web availability, but I'll check when possible.
ALSO....Derek ordered a few extra calendars, so if anybody wants more, I believe we have 8 extra copies. I'll post this again later after we start getting some AMAZING, RAVING reviews on how GREAT this calendar is. Not that I'm biased or anything....:D Either that or Derek's gonna have to foot the bill out of his allowance!
I also want to say thanks for replying to my brief, dry emails. I had about 30 of them to answer, so they had to be short! It was very cool to be a part of something like this, and if we get lots of positive feedback, we'll consider doing it again next year....next time with an EARLIER photo cutoff date!;)

I got back, and found the nice present (2 calendars) waiting for upon my return... The quality is top notch - even better than I was expecting! The photos are great, but the fact it was a community project (with a couple of KEY players leading the charge:up:) makes even that much more impressive... If I say it in the store, I'd gladly have paid for it.
Now, I need to start planning out some pictures over the next 11 months, in prep for the 2009 calendar! :baaa:

Unfortunately, we have a few people I am still chasing, but I guess that must be expected.
I will say that in addition to our plan of making absolutely no money from this project, I've actually lost (my own) money I put up on this project, not to mention time spent. I think that next year the calendar will have to be about $25, and will be sent postage due through one of the major delivery companies. Hey, the first time always has teething problems, right?

My dislike: 11 Black Marauders.....out of 13 Cars. Need more variety IMHO.
Canadian Calender means Canadian Marauders?: I thought the pics submiting was open to all Marauders....but I cant be picky there because it is a Canadian calendar!
And maybe a little more on the discription or info in the boxes....
Over all it is a very well put together piece....

I like the size it has. It's perfect for my desk space. Larger calendars get partially hidden behind my desk. This one is completely visible (I have a half-wall against my desk, but it's not a cubicle).
Taemian
01-09-2008, 06:16 PM
Heya folks,
Good start to the feedback, keep it coming!
As for the colours, the silver (mine) and the blue (Peter's) were the only non-black MM photos sent in. Silver is rare up here, and DTRs are non-existant it seems. I bought my silver in Tennessee and had it shipped up here. There aren't any DTRs that we know of, but maybe someone will buy one and join the board by next year.
The calendar was for Canadian-owned Marauders, as this was a project to build a little community spirit, awareness and fun! If I had to take pics from all MM owners everywhere, I have NO idea how I'd pick only 12 shots.
I guess the calendars could be a different size, but the amazing deal we got from Derek (freakstatus) at Staples wouldn't be avaliable then. Speaking of price, so far I've lost almost $60 due to shipping costs switching, and under charging postage.
Next year's calendar (if there is one), the calendars will probably be closer to $25 PLUS shipping. At the minimum, I'd like to take Derek and his wife out for a nice dinner for all his help, and for the great discount he got us.
And my own wife wouldn't mind coming, as I spent much of my weeknights answering emails galore, and going through reams of photos, while she waited patiently and always rushed out daily to mail calendars as cheques came in....fellas, SHE is a BIG reason the calendar came together, because without her patience with me during all of this, I would've passed on the whole thing instead of making her frustrated with me. :bows: In the end, she is really happy we all had fun and have a great looking calendar to be proud of!
I also really wished I could have sent Peter a free calendar for his great logo design, same for Sully008 for all his Photoshop editing. I want people to be encouraged and excited about being involved, and reward them in some small way. Unfortunately, this was not the time to do it as I really screwed up the money calculations.:censor: Maybe next year we'll start much earlier, and do a pre-payment thing. I also wondered about putting the whole thing up on eBay to see if there is more interest as well. That would make things SOOO much easier I think, than the way I did it this time. I'd just post it in the "For Sale" section here.
Ideas/comments?

Btw, I TRIED to take a photo of where Derek lives, but there were a group of his neighbors hanging around, making me nervous about parking my Marauder. Here's a photo...

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I'd love to have some more "area-specific" photos next year. We had great ones from Master, Chader, and Freakstatus, but more would be great. Any famous landmarks/geography would be great to include, but of course any good shot will be considered!
I will be giving a prize next year for the person with the best photo that we can use in November (Rememberance Day/ Veteran's Day). Be creative with the (respectful) use of military monuments, sites, equipment. Granpaws, thanks again for your photo and your willingness to switch months.

I have an idea for next year's calendar that I'd like to pitch:
What about a Celebrity Charity Calendar?
Taemian, you are the one that made me think of it with the Stargate movie set comment. I thought "wouldn't it be great if you could get Richard Dean Anderson to pose by the car". Then I thought - "not likely if it was in a distributed calendar". Then I thought "But, if it was for CHARITY, then maybe, just maybe".
This lead me to think "Man, here in Halifax, I could get:
1) The trailer Park Boys
2) The 22 Minutes Crew
3) Matt Anderson and/or Charlie Acourt
or even....
Theodore Tugboat. Picture this: Marauder parked on jetty, Theodore wide eyed looking at Marauder with scared-mouth attached, and boat visibly leaning away from the car. Would be cute.
You guys out west could get:
1) Little Mosque
2) Corner Gas
3) Folks from that new Horsey Show
BC could get all sorts of things, I'm sure.
Central could get Rick Mercer (which I might be able to facilitate for them).
Any thoughts on an idea of this magnitude?
If the calendar was for a charity like injured soldiers from Afganistan, then maybe we could get Maj Gen. Romeo Dallard and some other Canadian War heros standing by the car at a memorial.
Just thoughts, of course....

Great idea, but it won't fly. Most stars have exclusivity stuff in their contracts and already get approached by about a billion charities a year. Having been in the industry for over 10 years now, I know the realities of the biz out here in Vancouver.
Sorry to be a dream killer, but this one ain't gonna fly. Besides, who wants people in the shot to distract you from the Marauder itself?!? :D

How many times must I ask....if you send me a cheque, send your screen name with it. How am I supposed to know who you are otherwise??
I have yet to receive cheques from the following people:

Larry Staunton

Peter (?!?!? did I make a mistake here??)

There are 4 others whose cheques haven't arrived, but their calendars haven't been sent out yet, either. The list of people above HAVE their calendars and I don't have their as payment yet.
Would the member from Yonkers please confirm his real name and screen name so I can mark him down as paid and send out the calendar, please? Thank you.
Please don't let this drag on guys, honour your commitment. You make this a task for me if I have to chase people down.
All said and done, we only had one person who ordered 2 calendars, then ignored every PM from then on. I'd love to wrap this up soon with no more ugly surprises please.
Thanks to the GREAT MAJORITY who sent their cheques in right away so I could clear the printing costs off my credit card.

If you are stuck with calendars that aren't paid for, I'll likely take some of them, with the right price for shipping this time, to boot. Hopefully that will help alleviate the monetary side of the stress. Even if I didn't need/want the cal's, I'd probably take them after all you've done for us.

You guys..... You all said you were going to buy a calendar, but haven't sent a single cheque. You were all last PM'd by me January 07/08. I haven't gotten a cheque from any of you. Answers???
Looks like anyone wanting another calendar can speak up now, there's no reasonable excuse for cheques not being here by now. This is really starting to piss me off, unless any of you have some situation I'm unaware of? By requesting a calendar here, by PM or otherwise, you signed a contract. Read the thread, you made a commitment. I hate to say it, but unless I get some answers, I'll be speaking with the board moderators as to your account status here at MM.net. I don't appreciate being yanked around on my own dime, and "deadbeat bidders" are pretty much killing any remote thought I might have about ever doing this again. It's too much work for the hassle...
No angry smilie things here, I'm too disappointed in members unless ANY of you has a really really good excuse....

Gentlemen;
Wow, you guys are an impressive collection of community. It means a LOT to me to see that most of you appreciated the work that went into this thing. Let's remember that Peter did an awesome logo design (better tm it, pal!), Sully did some great photoshopping/cleaning, Derek got us a GREAT price, and the owners took awesome shots! BTW, the guy who PM'd me and asked why they were so expensive compared to the BMC calendar....duh? They have 9000+ members and ordered a huge number of them??!?! It's called bulk pricing, dude.
I sold two more locally to guys on the movie I'm working on, so I have two calendars left. I'll PM you guys to see who really wants one, and who was just doing me a favour by taking another one. That was a really cool thing to do, btw. After discussing the whole subject with my wife, she agrees that PRE-selling is the way to go, making a cutoff date, THEN printing them all out when the cheques come in if we do this again.
I just wanted to state for the record that with support like this from you guys, going out of your way to make this a break-even project for me, means a lot. That being said, go ahead and take pictures of your MM throughout the year so any 2009 calendar attempt can be a "smoother" event than this year!

I'd be up for another calendar or two
The problem wasn't really finding folks who wanted the calendars, it was finding Canadian owners who actually took the time to find a decent spot/backdrop and taking the time to photo them decently. The ones who made the calendar pages were good/great, but there was alot of work needed to get there. Many folks sent first pictures, and we had to say "Maybe try again....this time with feeling..!"
Of course, art is always subjective, but taking a picture of your car, still dripping wet from the carwash, sitting on the side of an unscenic road shoulder, with garbage in the ditch behind it.....not the thing to do.
Also, we did try to do a calendar the year after that one, and I think I only had about 4 photos emailed in. Pricing would definitely be different, as I actually lost money due to the shipping costs we charged.
Lots of time was volunteered by various owners for Photoshopping tasks and design layout stuff (Thanks Sully_008 and Peter, and FREAKSTATUS!) so I'd at LEAST want to give these guys a free calendar for their efforts next time. My guess is that a calendar of the same quality as the first run would be about $30 shipped to your door, and I can't see many people willing to sign up for that. Maybe I'm wrong?
Then there were the people who signed up and then cancelled their orders after we printed them...in the end, owners who got their calendar and like them so much, ordered a second copy for the office/garage/friend etc. Amazing folks coming through in the end.
If anyone has copies of the first calendar scanned, feel free to post up here...my scanner was built just after the Commodore 64.
FREAKSTATUS kept the printing price super low, since he's a manager at an internationally known office supply company that shall remain nameless. (But I can tell you that they sell thumbtacks, binders, STAPLES, and things like that...and doing things with him is very EASY ) Without him, the project won't get off the ground. We were DINKS then, and now we're both chasing after little pairs of feet much of the time, so there is the time factor as well. I think people have no idea how much time is needed for 12 simple photos and a layout, we sure didn't!
If reviving this thread sparks interest, I'll bite. The address to send photos to for consideration would be Marauderphotos@gmail.com Depending on what we get, we'll go from there I guess.
READ THE VERY FIRST POST in this thread before sending anything please.

Ok, here goes. The car is abosolutely perfect in every shot. Clean, shiny, not dripping wet, no heavy ArmourAll shine on the tires....just perfect.
The first photo is the best, and the reflection idea is spectacular! A few things like the parking lines could be PS'd out, and the plain background keeps the car as the main focus. I'd say it's a 75% photo. The last 3 would need lots of work. Take a look at the mongo oil stain on the ground, people and other vehicles around, and you'll see what I mean about background, foreground, and scenery concerns. Again, the car is flawless, but lots of cropping/PS work would need to be done to those.
Since I want this calendar to be as good or BETTER than the first one, I'll be quite picky. I only want the best shot from and for you guys! I think I'll start a new thread later today entitled "2012 Marauder Calendar" in this section, and we'll continue the discussion there. Please don't post anything else after this final post, just wait for the new 2012 thread. Thank you!
