View Full Version : Temptation leads to a warning

So I'm on the interstate in the left lane in moderate traffic and we are all doing 75 in a posted 65. Then, traffic slows for a while behind one slower car, but I see that the right lane has opened a gap. I drift over two lanes, punch it up to 95 for about 30 seconds, then drift back to the left and let me speed drop back to 75.

Unfortunately, one of the cars in the middle lane that I passed on the right was an unmarked state trooper. He lit, up, we pulled over, Igot a lambasting, and a warning.

I don't know why he did not ticket me. I don't think it was the MM. Maybe it was because it was daylight, dry, I had my seatbelt on, he was feeing forgiving...

Anyway, the temptation of power can lead to bad results.

Well that's a big oopsie. Reminds ya to keep it down. I get frustrated because central FL has so much traffic on the roads there is never a good time or place to exercise the car other than race tracks.

I'll bet that you were courteous and respectfull to the LEO, and your age probably helps ;).

Was the unmarked car a CV?

I had a similar encounter Friday.

I was pulling out of a place to the left. A guy had his turn signal on and was turning right into the same entrance/exit I was waiting at. So, while he was turning, I turned. No prob, right? WRONG! The old lady in the car behind him punched it. She was right next to a cop. I saw the front end lift and the quick approach so I gave it some gas (maybe 1/2 throttle). She pushed me to about 60 in a 45! The cop next to her sped up and PASSED her and jumped behind me! I pulled into the job site I was on my way to and he blocked me in and FREAKED on me!!! I told him he needed to ticket the old lady, too. He ended up not ticketing. The town is an old people retirement town and I'm sure his stop was a 'show' for the old folks against 'that kid in the loud obnoxious car'.

Glad you didn't get ticketed either.

Or, could also be that he had no official way to get a speed or lock on in to hit you up with so was kind and gave the warning? Just a thought.

Do you think maybe that one slower car knew there was an unmarked State Trooper in the mix?

I don't get out of the Orlando area much, sadly.

I'm pretty sure the unmarked was a Buick. He was in uniform, so very likely the left lane had slowed down because the lead driver saw the LEO. He could have tagged me for weaving in traffic if he wanted to. And speeding, as he was doing about 8 over the limit when I blew past him.

I don't drive enough to warrant a detector system in the car. I do watch the cars ahead for unexpected brake light action. And now I will remind myself that if traffic slows down, it is for a reason.

Were you weaving like a ricer or did you slowly take charge of the lanes? that usualy also has a better look. Most people like to speed up lane changes as the speed the car up and it looks reckless form a distance. Your age, you not arguing, and how soon you pulled over most likely played a factor.

Well, I signalled all of my lane changes and was not cutting anyone off, which may have helped. And when he lit up I moved over as quickly as was safe, turned on my emeg flashers, dropped both front windows, and had both hands on the steering wheel.

Over the past 20 years (that includes an Audi 4000 and two Taurus SHOs), I've had four warnings for speeding and four tickets: 89 in a 65, 81 in a 65, 52 in a 40, and 40 on a road where the limit had just dropped from 40 to 25. All the events were daylight and dry road conditions. All honest tickets and every LEO was polite and professional.
