Where do I start?
My brother’s Marauder burst into flames on October the 5th for no apparent reason. We were at an event and all of a sudden we see the interior of his Marauder up in flames.
The car was parked and turned off for over 20 minutes before this started.

<font face=" /><o:p></o:p>
My brother grabbed the fire extinguisher from the building and sprayed the heck out of it.
<o:p></o:p>
Called the fire department and they thought that “a short developed somewhere in the door.” I told them I thought a fuse would blow first but they had no answer.
<o:p></o:p>
Next we called the police but they didn’t think it looked criminal with over 90 people all around the car (which was parked in front of the building at the event).

Anyway, to make a long story short, the insurance company totaled it. We thought that they were going to fix it since it didn’t look that bad but I guess there was “smoke damage”?!?
<o:p></o:p>
This left him in a very bad position because there are very few cars available now that meet his wants:
<o:p></o:p>
-Must be built and assembled in the USA.
-Must be a car and not a truck because it will become his Daily Driver and is tired of trucks. (However, he almost bought an F-150 so go figure).
-Must be roomy because he is just over 6’ and takes the car seat all the way back even in the Marauder so something small wouldn’t do.

So…
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comhttp://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/ /><o:p></o:p>
<FONT face=
<font face=" /><o:p></o:p>
He ended up with a Sable. Before you start laughing, remember that there is not much offered that meet the three needs above.
<o:p></o:p>
Also, it is MUCH roomier than the Marauder inside and a person (even an adult) can actually sit behind him now. In the Marauder, the seat behind him was rendered useless.
<o:p></o:p>
The 263 HP 3.5 Liter Engine in the Sable is much peppier than the 224 HP 4.6 Liter in the 2008 Grand Marquis. If fact, besides both owning Marauders, we also own 2 Crown Vics as company cars and, while I don’t have actual numbers, I think that the Sable is faster than either of them.
<o:p></o:p>
Also, it is so well made that I even forgot that it is front wheel drive. There is no torque steer at all and we loaded the engine BIG TIME.
<o:p></o:p>
Unlike many people who baby their new engines for the first 1000 or so miles, we let them get to normal operating temps and then PEDAL TO THE METAL for the first thousand miles. We also always change the oil after the first 50 miles because we don’t exactly know how long ago it was filled at the factory and then there might be some tiny debris from the manufacturing of the engine so we don’t risk it and flush it at the first 50 miles and then after the first 1000 miles because we really load up the engine.
<o:p></o:p>
After the first 1000 miles we just drive the car as we normally would and change the oil every 3K no matter what the Manufacture recommends (in the Sable it happens to be every 7500 miles. If we waited that long we would have heart attacks.)
<o:p></o:p>
Anyway, here are a few pictures of when my brother came over so that we can change his oil after the first 50 miles.

I agree the damage doesn't look so bad that it should have been written off.
Could someone have tossed a cigarette butt in the car?

Just from the photos looks like the fire was down between the drivers seat and the door. Did the driver flick a cigarette out the window (and not notice it blew back inside)? Then he gets out, it smoulders and then a fire. Also, if this car was totalled Im cetain somebody will rebuild it, it doesnt look bad at all really unless the heat melted the wires in the dash.

Yes, it is the one I asked for help in getting and you made a few of these ":rolleyes:" remarks because you didn't believe I was asking the help for him. I think your quote was "it's easier to ask something for your brother".
Anyway, I guess you have your answer now.
Also, does Ford have a plant in Missouri? I think that is where the window sticker said it was built. I will double check on but I am SURE it is assembled here in the USA. That is why he also considered the F-150 (b/c it is built by his fellow middle class Americans.)
Also, they are all 3.5L V6s. 263HP

I thought the same. The car was off but the doors were not locked. The windows were up so if so it could not have been a mistake but I do not think that anyone would do such a thing where we were.

We do not smoke cigarettes and nobody is allowed to smoke in any of our cars. Ever. If we ever take a smoker somewhere, we will pull over before they smoke inside.

I'm sorry but I don't see that car being totalled. We have a body shop at work and the stuff they repair would make you cringe. I'm talking welding to halves of a car together. I would be fighting like hell with the insurance. Unless you wanted out of the car anyway. I'll bet it would take at most 6k to fix that car. New door, seat, carpet, headliner, wiring harness, clean the hell out of everything while it is apart. That is JMO but this is what I do for a living.

Crown Vic vs Sable. As respects rear seat room just pull the drivers seat up on the MM 1.2" to equal the same as the Sable and you will have .4" less rear leg room than the Sable. The Crown Vic also has a lot more hip and shoulder room.
I am glad your brother was able to find a car to meet his persona and needs.

If you dont smoke but the car was unlocked, somebody set that fire. Seats dont spontaneously combust. That said, a "totalled" car with no body damage would be a nice buy for somebody.

When they totaled it we were shocked and mad. We didn't want to deal with repairing it ourselves because the local dealers KILL you on parts. We could have had a project car but again, we didn't have the time to play with it since he needs a daily driver and we thought the resale would be close to nothing since it will show up as totaled by fire in a CarFax report.
Congrats on your bro getting the Sable. It is a nice looking ride.
What about cigars?
Thanks. Also, there is no smoking of any kind in any of our cars.
why didnt he just get another MM?....that thing has the wrong wheel pulling on accel:P
He needed something new, reliable and with a warranty. Didn't have time to sit and find the "perfect used Marauder." If Crown Vics were available he might have gotten another one but they don't make them anymore (for the public) and in South FL it is impossible to drive a Grand Marquis and not feel 40 yrs. older.
Just glad it happened on the inside and not the outside. The tank was full right. At least someone should be able to buy it and salvage the car. The car off E-bay was a lot worst and you the guy driving it totally restored it.
Not only was there gas in the car but he had guns and bullets in the glove compartment. Remember that there were a lot of people near by since were were at an event so we are glad nobody got hurt.

If I did what you do for a living then maybe it could get fixed for that price. However, I am "sure" that the Ford dealer would have charged them a lot more than that for parts and labor. Don't forget that where there is fire there is smoke (actually it's the other way around) and that removing the smell permanently in most cases would require them to replace a lot more parts such as the seat cushions and all the carpeting and who knows what else.

Logic says you are right about the fire. We thought the same but it is almost impossible to think that somebody set his car on fire at the event where we were.

From the way it looks, is it possible that the fire may have started due ot the heated seats?? Maybe the element stayed on or shorted out and caught the seat on fire?

No heated seats. It's one those earlier 300Bs. It was a mutt.
No locking gas door.
No auto parking break release.
No dash clock.
No Map pockets.
Had traction control.
Had small spare.
Had Black Valve covers (why oh why?).

I give him credit for going with another mercury, buts its noo Marauder..
Really surprised that was deemed totalled, As I saw the pics I started to breathe easier as only that part of the interior was damaged, and thought it was going to be back in business Maraudin' away. What a shame.

Also, if he insisted on a car built in the USA, another Marauder (or a Crown Vic or a Marquis) would not have fit his criteria as, IIRC, they are all assembled in Canada. The only US-assembled Panther was the Town Car, but I'm not sure where that production got moved when the Wixom plant closed...

No, they took it the very next morning. The only things we remembered to get were his Cargo Net, Owner's Manual, and Jack.
Unlike my car that has suspension mods, his car was 100% stock so not much we could have taken without the insurance company complaining.

Somebody needs to gut it, clean all the fire suppressant out of it, hang a driver door on it, repaint, driver seat and carpet and keep this vehicle on the road. The stories you could tell about it being a "survivor" will make you love it even more.

No need to repaint it.
The paint looks bad because a little rain mixed with the fire suppressant. It wipes right off the paint.
With a new interior and some wiring, she would be better than new. She has been more trouble free than my Marauder which is an early (built aug of 2002) 300A.
Maybe it would need a new driver window too since it looked stained from the fire/ smoke.

That's his new car? I had one as a loaner for a while, and it was quite good actually.
The one I had was a V6.
I'm not sure if they are assembled in the US though...?
You had a Milan.
All Tauii/Sables now have the punched out duratec, 3.5L V6 263 hp. But are wrong wheel drive.
Shora why did your brother buy the MM?? its Assembled in Canada....

Shora why did your brother buy the MM?? its Assembled in Canada....
Buying "Built in the USA" is his first choice but he (nor I) will start walking in the comming yrs. when most Fords are going to be built in Mexico/ Canada.
He set out to TRY AND SUPPORT HIS FELLOW AMERICAN WORKER. Is that wrong?
That doesn't mean that if a sweet ride (like the Marauder) was available he would pass on it. Hell, we both bought Marauders didn't we?
Anyone who does not compromise there needs/ wants when buying a car does not end up with the best possible car for those said needs/ wants.

I hope that he at least had a trigger lock on his gun.
If not, let him know that he needs to be more responsible. Consider this (http://www.center-of-mass.com/Store_Front.htm) or this (http://www.deansafe.com/mihabo.html) or this (http://www.hide-away-safe.biz/gun-safe/) or this (http://www.corporatetravelsafety.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1 69) as good options. Otherwise, not at all! Be a responsible gun owner! Good thing no one raided his unlocked car.
BTW, I'm sorry to hear of his troubles. Best regards with his new car.

I have several safes and locks that I use. Unfortunatley every portable safe / lock I have seen can easily be defeated.
I thru away a Mossberg Safe because it was anything but a safe.
As respects a criminal the only benefit to the owner is to slow them from using your weapon againest you in the event you catch them breaking into your car and they are unarmed. Better to unload it and take the ammo/clip w/ u.
Unfortunately in the area I am in virtually every criminal is armed and shoots to kill with out hesitation.

That's funny, I'm 6' 8" and my passangers have found my MM back seat quite roomy. I tried sitting in the Sable when they first came out as the Montego and it was a no-go for me; too cramped. Maybe your brother's Marauder was 3/4 scale?

Look at my post #19 for a comparison. It has more head room, similar leg room but less hip/shoulder. Good for tall/narrow/skinny.
I like the styling, it caught my eye.

Yeah, we went through that already sometime ago remember? You also looked up when Ford first began building cars in Mexican but I cannot remember the date of your finding from the top of my head. Maybe 1930 something?
With that said, I am sure that they were building cars elsewhere on a more limited bases than they are now. Can you look up the percentage of cars that they used to build in Canada/ Mexico in the early 20th century
and percentage of their cars that they are building there now in the early 21st century?
I am willing to bet dollars to donuts that the percentage of cars being built elsewhere has increased dramatically and that the trend is not favorable (IMO) to my fellow American worker.
By the way, you were right. My brother's 2008 Sable was assembled in Chicago.

LOL you are right.
The Marauder is indeed roomy and should be more than roomy enough for one of his height. However, he sits about as far back as he can reach (kind of leans with the seat back a bit more than normal) and with the Marauder's adjustable pedals it was it was more of a problem for the back seaters.
However, he sits that way in every car and I kid you not, an adult can sit behind him now. It wasn't so with the Marauder.

As I recall Ford Mexico was sometime in the '20s and primarily for domestic Mexico.
I suspect production in Canada was always greater than production in Mexico, and if anything % of production in Mexico has now increased more than production in Canada. I can't find any data though.
I'm sure you are correct though that US production at least from the traditional Big 3 is down compared to their foreign plants.

I'm glad that you where there guarding the car for most of the time.
The standard locked glove box is as secure as a rubber band. I even had mine pop open while driving! Doesn't matter if someone knew the gun was in there or not. If they broke in looking for valuables and came accross a gun, they would most likely take it.
If someone were to get access your gun and use it, you would be liable for not securing it in an acceptable manner. Even though it is a PITA, I only wanted to bring this to your attention. Also, even the cheesiest of portable gun safes should stop a younger kid from getting access to it.
Instead of separating the ammo & the gun, render it non functional by removing the slide or the barrel. You can carry either of those light weight parts legally since it is only a part at that point. Do not carry the frame or ammo!
I really mentioned this as a warning to be more aware of the responsibility, not to pass judgement of your brother.

This is in lieu of having a real safe to store it in, sorry if I wasn't clear on that.
I agree, a U.S. citizen in good standing should have the ability to defend themselves at a moments notice, not to be hindered by ridiculous laws that criminals don't adhere to.
