Have you tried upgrading to silverstar headlight bulbs.
Many members of this site have with positive results.

I had switched out the OEM bulbs last year for Phillips Night Guard bulbs. The burn time on the silverstars wasn't as long.

I have read on another forum about a wiring kit that improves the voltage that the headlights get, thus more light output. Looks OEM and seems to work well.

Switch to a HID kit. There are some good brands.

HID is a great choice for use not cheap. I learned years ago cheap things aren't good and good thing aren't cheap. I've been thinking about the McCulloch kit duel 5000K . found on www.Xeononpros.com (http://www.Xeononpros.com)

I had Silverstar Ultra bulbs in befor I ruined the front end. They put stock bulbs back in, now it's like driving with my head up my anus. You are correct, the stock seem to be more directed straight out ahead with less light to the side. At least that's the way it look to my eyes. My spousal unit (who has no vision issues) agrees, the ultras were much better. The whiter light did a much better job for my crappy eyes. I run with headlights on any time the car is driven day or night. We don't put that many hours/miles on our cars, so longevity of bulbs isn't an issue for me. Frankly, if they help me see better at night I will change them as often as I have to. With me it's a safety issue because of my vision.
