A co-worker told me this story tonight. Just a few nights ago, he was on his way home from work. He was drving on the Long Island Expressway. He noticed up ahead there was a vehicle on the right hand shoulder, facing the wrong way with it's headlights on. My friend was in the far left lane. As he approached the vehicle, it pulled out on to the highway. He had to swerve to avoid being hit. It was then that he saw the vehicle was a tow truck with a car on the back. The truck did not have on any of it's Emergency lights. When he looked back in his mirror, he saw smoke (actually steam) and knew someone had hit the truck. He got off at the next exit in order to go back to the scene of the accident. Because of the traffic caused by the accident, when he reached the scene, the police, fire, and ambulances were already there. He pulled over and went to talk to a police officer. He told the cop what had happened to him, and that the truck did not have on any lights other than the headlights. The cop said now it made sense as to what happened. Most of the tow trucks are either F450 or F550 Super Dutys. The car that broadsided it was a Crown Victoria. He said the car was destroyed beyond belief. It gave him the chills, and made him feel a bit sick too. He asked the officer about the driver of the car. The cop said he was able to walk away from it. Of course they took him to the hospital on a stretcher anyway. My friend commented that the driver must have been lucky. The cop said, It wasn't just luck, if it was any other car, he would have been dead. He would have died on impact !
My friend said the queasy feeling returned as he walked back, looking at his Hyundai. He remembered me saying, "my life is worth more than a few miles per gallon". That's what I've always said to the guys at work when they wondered why I didn't want a car that gets better gas mileage. I average 20+ miles per gallon. With their little cars, they get only 3 to 5 miles per gallon more than I do. No thanks, I'll keep my BIG car !!
