Hi Gang,

I've decided to start doing my own changes, partly to save a little dough, because the synthetic oil is so expensive, and the interval is short (3000-5000) and I put a lot of miles on my ride. Also, I just don't trust anyone else working on my car...

Does anyone have any neat ideas on how to make it quicker, cleaner, easier, etc? I like the Fumotovalve a lot, and think it's a great idea. I'm not in the least worried about it opening while driving: it has a spring loaded lever that must be not just be depressed, but then rotated to open it.

I am not in the least bothered by oil disposal. An Autozone down the street will take it for free. (can you tell I'm trying to nip the naysayers in the bud?:P)

Let's keep the thread on track: If you like getting your oil changed, and have no other ideas, that's great. No need to post.

If you like doing it the old fashion way, and have no other ideas, that's great. No need to post.

If you like changing your oil yourself, and have constructive input on how to simplify the process, your input is eagerly sought.

Anyway, the fumotovalve will keep the mess down A LOT. No more, 'OK, the nut is about to come off, get ready for the flood' situation. But, you still have to crawl under the car to flick the fumoto.

The good thing about that is the drain is right on the motor, so any filings should come out as well.

But, I've heard of pumps, too. Anyone used these???

Any other ideas, or methods???

I DEFINITELY want to do a remote oil filter install in the future. That will make that part a LOT easier, if located properly. But, this thread is about CHANGING THE OIL, not the filter. Thanks all;)

Looks nice. Where exactly is that, I can't tell from the photo???

BTW, it's just a remote filter, it doesn't help you drain the oil, is that correct?

I just remove the oil fill cap and dipstick prior to draining. This helps the oil drain faster, works just like a vent system in your house to make the water drain faster.:burnout:

I change my own oil & filter and I use "Reynolds Wrap Aluminum Foil" under the oil filter, use the 18" one and just mold it over all the lines that are under the oil filter to direct all the oil where you want it.

It works for me. :cool4:

+1 on the Fumoto valve. Did you know you can get a 5/8 hose clamp (the old factory style) to put around the valve for some extra security? I'll take a picture later.

+1 on the oil deflector.

Put a baggie around the oil filter as you twist it off. The baggie will capture most of the oil coming out of the filter.

OK--what exactly is a Fumoto valve? I've seen a system made by purolator or fram or someone that replaces the drain plug with some sort of valve, I imagine this is similar?

Frame rail in front of the left front wheel.......vertical orientation and easy to get to!!! I have blower pipes everywhere around the OEM filter place!!:argue::mad2:

As far as draining the pan.....unscrew the plug and.....IT RUNS RIGHT OUT!!!:D Pardon me if I don't understand the question but my complaint has always been the damn filter location and the mess it makes!!!:mad2:

I just buy the cheapest can of brake cleaner when I buy the oil. I know I'm going to use 3/4 of the can when I change the oil.

Be careful and read up on chlorinated and non-chlorinated. I think one of them is not long term friendly with rubber/plastic. +$0.02.
