Its only 130 miles. That's an easy 2-hour run (add 30 minutes for uncertainties). BDJ is running nearly twice that.

Keep us in mind when we start hitting Big Bat's again on Kent Island. That's probably only 50-60 miles from you.

Hey, if you are concerned about getting lost, we can have our own convoy. You are welcome to meet with me near US-1 & I-95 intersection, at the Christiana Mall at 8:45

Trust me, I don't know. Google is your friend, google maps is also quite handy! ;)

According to Google-maps: From Christiana, DE to Iwo Jima Memorial is about 106 miles, 2hrs & 40 mins. That would place us there about 11:30-noon. After we meet the folks there. I imagine that we will then head on over to the Museum arriving around 1:00. Somewhere in that time frame, maybe we can grab a quick grub stop. I know that I'll never make to 5:00 or so without a pitstop!

So does this mean you'll be going if BigDogJim & I meet up with you?

This weekend is lined up for an engine change for Jacki's Matrix. It's been AWP for a while. Not too many old Matrix's around to draw from. The remanufactured wok is supposed to arrive this week. If it's here in time to get it done before Saturday, we'll be there.

This looks like a fantastic turnout. We even have an Ordy and others coming up from the Tidewater area. That's great!

I live only 15 miles from the museum about 1/2 way between Mount Vernon and Triangle. See you all at the museum. I plan on arriving around 12:30 PM.

Breadfan might be coming from the Nokesville-Manassas vicinity so he'll likely pass on the Mount Vernon and Iwo Jima link-ups as well.

If you plan to do the George Washington Parkway to Mount Vernon Parkway to US Route 1 south, be sure to allow some extra time. Posted speed limits are 45 MPH on those routes.

Is it worth the 4 extra miles to go on the Mount Vernon Parkway instead of just George Washington Parkway to US Route 1 south?
The Mount Vernon Parkway is a much more scenic drive that runs along the Potomac River from Alexandria until it joins US Route 1 (also known as Jefferson Davis Hwy, Jeff Davis Hwy, or Richmond Hwy) at Fort Belvoir. VA.

George Washington Parkway turns into the Mount Vernon Highway when it comes out the south side of Alexandria, VA.

I wouldn't take US 1 from Arlington/Pentagon/Crystal City area to Fort Belvoir on a bet. It is a nightmare of traffic lights, construction zones, shopping centers, and congestion.

About 5 miles south of Fort Belvoir, VA the road splits. Left lane goes to I-95 south and the right lane continues on US 1 through Woodbridge. This is a dilemma point. Personally, I would use I-95 south to exit 150 (about 10 miles). It is all about timing 'cause I-95 South can get plugged up pretty badly. US 1 south is a maze of stoplights until you get out of Woodbridge proper (about 4-5 miles).

So, from the Iwo Jima Memorial, I would take GW Parkway south through Alexandria. Then continue on Mount Vernon Parkway, past Mount Vernon, until it T-Bones with US 1. Make a left turn. Straight on US 1 for 5 miles until the split under the RR bridge overpass. Left lane takes you to I-95 South. Continue on I-95 South for 10 miles. Exit 150 toward Quantico.

Ya'll have fun. :D

...regarding 95...if HOV is going south, it will probably run pretty good most of the way.

If HOV is going north, it will slow down.

If HOV is south, HOV ends around the exit for the museum, so it may slow down a tad as the HOV'ers merge in.

I'll get that out of the way early so I can come from the other direction and go on Joplin Rd, lots of curves and hills!

HOV ends just about 1 mile north of Exit 150 for the museum. I can't figure out the weekend schedule of north or south timings. It seems the VDOT has set it up so that it is open in the opposite direction to the one that needs it the most.

Google maps shows this trip to be about 1-1/2 hours. If true, we would need to leave the Iwo Jima Memorial at 11:30 to arrive at the museum at 1:30. I added a 1/2 hour for a lunch stop. I see that there is a Burger King & Wendy's just north of the museum.
That being the case, I'll shoot for getting at the Iwo Jima Memorial around 10:30-11:00. I would like to get a few pics while there.

45-55 minutes should be doable from the Iwo Jima memorial. If you take the Mount Vernon Parkway route, you should not even hit any traffic until the US 1 /I-95 split near Woodbridge/Occoquan and that's about 12 miles from the museum. So the first 28 miles of the 40 mile run ought to be relatively trouble free. The last 12 miles is a crapshoot that no one can predict.

I think you'll be OK around noon or 1pm on Saturday going south. Northbound will look like a parking lot.

Of course, no one can predict traffic here, so hopefully i'm not jinxing it.

Check out Exit 152 on Google Earth/Maps, you get off 152 (Rt 234) towards Dumfries (NOT Manassas) and Rt 234 will end at Rt 1 within a light or two. Turn right (South) on Rt 1 and you'll do the last few miles on Rt 1, passing through the town of Triangle. Rt 1 will split and then come back together. It will come back together just north of the Museum and that's where the BK and Wendy's are located.

If it's clear I think the Museum exit puts you off Joplin Rd. which is just north of the museum and just south of the strip with BK/Wendys on Rt 1.

Hope this helps some.

Saturday, off-season, early afternoon --- shouldn't be too bad at all. If I-95 South ain't moving just get back off at the next exit and take US 1 south. You'll only be in the back-up for less than a mile.

Sometimes on Friday evenings coming home from work, I would like to get all the way up to 10 MPH. ;)

Patience is NOT my strong suit. Traffic in this area eventually leads to a general numbing sensation. Generally, I just tolerate it and sit back and listen to the radio or the CDs in the jukebox.

I have lived in this area for most of my life and would leave tomorrow given half a chance. I have been working for 15 years to get my company to open a branch office in Montana. They say that we have no customers in Montana. So, what's their point.

I was scoping out the wine list at the restaurant. See number 026? That's crazy. 120.00 a bottle for "Icewine"? Go with 020 or 022, yuuuuum yums!
Or maybe I'll bring my own...

My wife likes the no. 020 Twisted River Reisling because of the fruity taste.

German "Eiswein" is rare and sweet. Almost on the order of an after dinner cordial. Eiswein is made from the first of the frostbitten grapes late in the season. Thats why its so sweet..... and the supply rather limited. 1999 was a good year.

Personally, I do not do German wines anymore after the 1976 Bad Duerkheim "incident". So I'll be sipping the Schmankerl Rauchbier.

Ahhhhh, someone who knows German wines! I have never met a German wine I didn't like. Just some overly priced ones. I'm down to an '82, a '90, and an '05 on the rack right now.:(

Wow, I'm tired now! Just got in, averaged about 70 mph for the 230 mile trip. Very light traffic coming home.

We had a blast. The USMC Museum was very cool & impressive. It was great meeting all of you. It was neat to see all of the cars parked together. Any observers to our exit must think that we are all nuts!
Time for me to head to bed....I'll try to post pics on Sunday.

Sorry to have missed you guys at the Iwo Jima Memorial. I wish that I had waited longer for you, I missed out of going the scenic route.

It was a very good outing yesterday for the Capital Area Marauders. The weather turned out better than I expected. Unfortunately, for the first CAM meet in nearly 4 years, I walked out of the house without the camera. Please post up if you have pics from the day.

Tom, it was nice to meet you and your family. Likewise to Casey and Shawn on making the trip up from the Hampton/Tidewater area. Welcome to CAM. :welcome1:

Also welcome to "aparker0069" :welcome: a new member from the DC area who jumped on the convoy coming down from the Iwo Jima Memorial. See --- I did get your screenname right this time.

Jake -- your 1st place trophy/plaque from the Laurel UPS car show is fantastic. Very nice --- thanks for representing (and winning in your class) the Mercury Marauder community. Hope you got a chance to pass it around and let everyone see your prize.

Mark and Pam -- great to see you guys again and thanks for the SSHS7 video -- I'll be watching that on TV today between football and NASCAR.

Gordon and Chris -- Wow, a record run from Frederick to Quantico. Nice times. Always great to see you two.

EB, Mark K, Tom D, Mike O, Mark O, Chris (nice to meet your folks), Brian and Natalie --- enjoyed chatting with you again.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to come out and enjoy the day. Hope you thought it was worthwhile. I know that I did. Seeing the entire back row at the USMC museum filled with Marauders was a real treat. I think that I missed alot at the museum and I'll have to schedule a rerun to allow more time in some of the exhibits. However, I did NOT missed the opportunity to sit down upstairs and have an Amber Bock in the famous "Tun Tavern" -- birthplace of the US Marine Corps.

For me, one of the highlights was our grand entrance into the restaurant parking lot. The folks standing there must have thought an FBI bust was in progress when 15 MMs roared in. The look on their faces was ..... well .... Priceless !!!

Great day, good times with MM family and friends. Thanks to one and all !!! Lets do this again sometime. :D

We had a blast, a blast I say!
The trip there was fun despite heavy traffic, only went over a hunnerd 3 times that I recall. (IN YER FACE MAPQUEST!)
Charlie, your blue is spotless, and you have about 20 thousand less miles. I tried to switch but my key wouldn't work.;)
Merc, I don't know what's up but Pam and your Marauder seem to get better looking each time I see them, I think you made a deal with the devil. And the website is awesome, too. And I want to widen my rims after seeing yours.
Tom Doan, loved that engine and set up, and dang are you tall. I thought I was tall.
MP, nice ride, I want those tints now.
Silversurfer, that chin spoiler and wing combo was the bomb. It was fun sitting at dinner with you and Natalie and ts and Hannah and ts' wife.
Haggis and Ladyhawk, great meeting you and what a mean, clean ride.
I am bad with names, I can't remember them all, but to everyone we met, it was a pleasure, and you are more than welcome to come visit if you are in the area. And it wouldn't bother me if you took the cat when you leave...

Yeah, my 'allergies' acted up in the museum a time or two. I only brought 3 rolls of film, I didn't think a Marine museum would be that photo-worthy, boy was I wrong, that place is mind blowing. And it's FREE?! I was out of film before we got to restaurant. Flat out forgot to bring the digital, I was kicking myself when the caravan left cause I was last in line, missed some great shots. I would definately go there again.

Did I do a faux paux, as in disrespecting the flag or the art by taking the pictures? Or are you mentioning as in efforts to preserve the artifacts?

I took the pictures in the art gallery & the flag display without a flash and the flag was also distorted through a translucent glass display. That is why those pictures are pretty dark looking.

If this is an issue of respect, I'll gladly remove them from my photo album.

Tom, it is not a disrespect issue, if it was I would have PM'd you. It is that they didn't want flash photograghy used as an effort for preservation. And since you did not use a flash disregard my post and carry on Troop.

The pics look great thanks for taking them.

Wow, Good to hear that there was no disrepect! I didn't want to delete them, but would if required.

As you can see, I didn't have any order, just took pics at random. There is so much more to see there! It is an awesome museum! Who cannot be moved while being there? I wasn't even in any of the armed services, but I do respect the sacrifices made for our freedom.

Did you notice the emblem is mirrored on the outside near the entrance as shown here (http://pasig.myphotoalbum.com/view_photo.php?set_albumName=a lbum14&id=IMG_1402) vs. here (http://pasig.myphotoalbum.com/view_photo.php?set_albumName=a lbum14&id=IMG_1403) , the second is how it is throughout the museum.

Yep, pics OK just not flash, it's a hard shot to get due to the low light but I'm happy about the low light, that will keep the original flag preserved yet we are still able to see it and pay our respects.

I couldn't believe it when ya'll were talking about how many pictures you all have taken. I was like....
:awe:

Then I remembered you were doin' it digital style. I'm stuck in the past. I would rather take pics then develop them. Maybe it was because of dad... we had a dark room in the house growing up and I would help him develop pics he had taken for the Navy and just in general.... I think I'm going to have to break out the camera again, it's suck a relaxing hobby.

Hey Natalie, I remember the days in high school doing photography class. I miss the creativity that film & paper offered. It did teach me patience, as you know how long some of the steps took.

I had a full manual camera that took decent pictures. Unfortunately it was only about 4 out of 12 shots:( Most of the time it was focus issues, as in just behind the subject was razor sharp, not the subject. That is when I decided to go digital.

I understand that if I were to use photoshop, you could do quite a bit to digital pics with it.

So now I mostly just point and shoot. I miss candid shots, that I was able to get with film, due to digital camera shutter lag.

Maybe I need to upgrade my digital stuff someday.

Which pic shows Brian's car?

The trunk liner did not come standard with the Marauder, so you might not have one. CAR MotorSports is a vendor here and has their own forum. Check here for more info on the liners >>>> http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18865
